‘Leader” is one of the top well known films from the year 1964. The year is crowded with such hit and popular films full of wonderful songs from Jahaan Ara, Haqueeqat, Wo kaun thhi, Shehnaayi, Aap ki Parchhayiyaan, Kashmir Ki kali, Dosti, April Fool Chitralekha, to Ghazal, Qawwali Ki Raat,Dosti, Kohraa & Chitralekha, Saanjh aur Savera, Sangam, Shagoon, Suhaagan, Raajkumar, Ziddi, Sharaabi, Beta Beti etc. I think all will agree this is an inspiring list of films. The year was an especially high point for Madan Mohan with eight releases going by the films already represented in the blog, which is equal to Shankar-Jaikishan’s eight films(songs posted). I think I will concentrate on 1964 for a while, for sending lyrics and writing an occasional post.
The film ‘Leader’ (1964) had maestro Naushad’s music and Shakeel Badaayuni’s lyrics. Fresh from the success of ‘Mere Mehboob’ in 1963, they seem to have carried on from there. The songs are well known and loved, six of which are posted. But I have discovered that there are few more well known songs yet to be posted. Actually I found an evergreen Rafi solo song which I had decided to write a post, but then yesterday I found this Rafi-Asha duet song, which simply must take precedence over the solo. ( Solo song lyrics I am sending in a separate mail. )
The duet on hand is a telephone song. I had seen this song on ‘Chhayageet’ on T.V. I have seen the film also on T.V. but had forgotten about this song. This is picturized on Vijayantimala and Dilip Kumar singing this duet on the their telephones. The concept of mobile phones was not even conceived then, though the Walkie-Talkie may have existed. Now a days we have songs happening on “Skype” which are no fun. Specially not the class of this song, where Dilip Kumar is pouring his cold drink in his speaker and it is seen coming out of Vijayantimala’s handset one stanza later 🙂 .
The picturization is also good with both actors’ antics and reactions visible on the screen, like we do the transcription of songs lyrics with two programmes simultaneously open on the Computer screen.

Song-Aaj kal shauq e deedaar hai (Leader)(1964) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shakeel Badaayuni, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
Aaj kal shauq-e-deedaar hai
kya kahoon
aap se pyaar hai
aaj kal shauq-e-deedaar hai
ae ae
aaj kal shauq-e-deedaar
deedaar hai
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
kya kahoon
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
pyaaar hai
pyaar hai
meri jaanib se inkaar hai
ea ea
meri jaanib se inkaar
inkaar hai
kya karoon main agar pyaar hai
kya karoon
kya karoon
main agar pyaar hai
pyaar hai
pyar hai
pyaar wo cheez hai
jis se ae nazneen
pehle inkaar karte hain
saare haseen
phir ye kehte hain
iqraar hai ae ae
phir ye kehte hain
iqraar iqraar hai
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
kya kahoon
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
pyaaar hai
pyaar hai
chhotaa munh aur badi baat
mat bhooliye
dekhiye apni auqaat
mat bhooliye
qissa-e-ishq bekaar hai ae ae
qissa-e-ishq bekaar
bekaar hai
kya karoon main agar pyaar hai
kya karoon
kya karoon
main agar pyaar hai
pyaar hai
pyaar hai
aap ki har adaa par
main qurbaan hoon
kuchh taras khaayiye
main bhi insaan hoon
kis liye mujh se
takraar hai ae ae
kis liye mujh se
takraar takraar hai
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
kya kahoon
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
pyaaar hai
pyaar hai
sun sakenge na ham
aap ki iltejaa
jaa ke deeje kisi aur
dar pe sadaa
yehaan dil hai na dildaar hai ae
yehaan dil hai na dildaar
dildaar hai
kya karoon main agar pyaar hai
kya karoon
kya karoon
main agar pyaar hai
pyaar hai
pyaar hai
aaj kal shauq-e-deedar hai
ea ea
meri jaanib se inkaar
inkaar hai
kya kahoon aap se
pyaar hai
kya karoon
kya karoon
main agar pyaar hai
pyaar hai
pyaar hai
jaan-e-man ab to
milne ka waada karo
ham nahin jaante
tum jiyo ya maro
guftagoo ka ye
koyi tareeqaa nahin
aur tum ko bhi
koyi saleeqaa nahin
meri ulfat ki insult
yoon na karo
you shut up
you shut up
you shut up
you shut up
you shut up
idiot apnaa rastaa chalo
yoon na tadpaao
aashiq ko dekho
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
