The Voice of Mukesh #54
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As we are getting close to the end of list for the Mukesh songs for 1950, the songs are increasingly becoming difficult to trace. Today’s song I have been able to locate in my own collection, and am posting it online, for the first time today. The film is an obscure one, titled ‘Raaj Mukut’. The film is a production from Mohan Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The film has an impressive star cast that includes Nimmi, Veena, Jairaj, Ram Singh, Sapru, Mishra, Gulab, Ramesh Sinha, Ramesh Thakur, Jankidas, Baby Tabassum.

The film has 11 songs. The music direction is by Pt. Gobindram, and the lyrics are from the pen of Bharat Vyas. Of the eleven songs, this is the only Mukesh song in the film.

An interesting thing that I have noticed before also. In the 1940s and later, almost all films have their songs released on records. Now, the standard format used to be the 78 rpm records. Each record could accommodate two songs which could be maximum of a little over 3 minutes of duration. The films that have an even number of songs, all of them could be accommodated on 78 rpm records, e.g. 12 songs would be released on 6 78 rpm records. The problem came when the number of songs in the film are odd. Then we are faced with the situation that one song would be left out from being recorded on 78 rpm records.

Some producers would still have them recorded. This was achieved by putting either some title music or other instrumental music piece from the film on the second side. Another way used was to put a song from another film on the second side. By these methods, the producers could ensure that all songs from the film are recorded.

However, there are many more such cases, wherein the odd song was left out from being recorded. In the absence of availability of the celluloid reel or other video format, such songs are in all likelihood, lost forever. In the case of this film also, one of its eleven songs is not recorded on a 78 rpm record, and hence it can be presumed that it is lost forever. In hindsight, it is clear that the producers / music directors probably did not recognize the historical importance of ensuring that all parts of the film and its music is preserved.

Anyway, lets listen to this expression of love from a now forgotten film, more than sixty years old. Enjoy.

Song-Do dilon ke mil jaane ka ye bahaana ho gaya(Raaj Mukut)(1950)Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Pt Govindram

Lyrics

do dilon ke mil jaane ka
ye bahaana ho gayaa
do dilon ke mil jaane ka
ye bahaana ho gayaa
ik ho gayee dewaanee
ik deewaana ho gayaa
ik ho gayee deewaanee
ik deewaana ho gayaa aa
do dilon ke mil jaane ka
ye bahaana ho gayaa

koi kisi se mil gayaa dekho
kismet ka ye khel
bina jaan pehchaan ho gayaa
aapas mein yoon mel
haan aapas mein yoon mel
teer e nazar ka dekh lo
koi nishaana ho gayaa
teer e nazar ka dekh lo
koi nishaana ho gayaa
ik ho gayee dewaanee
ik deewaana ho gayaa aa
do dilon ke mil jaane ka
ye bahaana ho gayaa

ek anokhi dekhi hamne
aisi mulaaqaat re
aankhon hi aankhon mein ho gayee
dil se dil ki baat re
ek anokhi dekhi hamne
aisi mulaaqaat re
aankhon hi aankhon mein ho gayee
dil se dil ki baat re
haan dil se dil ki baat re
in mast nigaahon ka koi
mastaana ho gayaa
in mast nigaahon ka koi
mastaana ho gayaa
ik ho gayee dewaanee
ik deewaana ho gayaa aa
do dilon ke mil jaane ka
ye bahaana ho gayaa
