The Voice of Mukesh #56
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, another simply wonderfully soulfully rendered song by Mukesh. This song is a song of wooing and romance, with a difference. It is a love song that Lord Ram sings on screen when He encounters Sita ji in the pushp vatika (flower garden). We can depend on the poets and the story tellers to create situations in which even the Supreme Power Himself is singing songs to serenade His would be. I really wonder what He would be thinking when He would have seen this film. 🙂

The film is ‘Ram Darshan’ from 1950. It is produced under the banner of Ram Krishna Pictures and is directed by poet Ramesh Gupta. And yes, all the sixteen songs in this film have been written by Ramesh Gupta. The cast of actors includes Mridula, Bharat Bhushan, Shashi Kapoor (Sr.), Sheila Naik, Baby Tara, Lakshman, Ramkrishna Chaubey, Tribhuwan Sinha, Kamlesh Thakar, Om Prakash Vyas, Shapurji, Aathwale amongst others. There are four music directors who share the credits for composing the 16 songs. This song is composed by DC Dutt.

The episode of the encounter in Pushp Vatika is a very well known episode. It is here that Lord Ram and Sita ji come face to face for the first time in this incarnation. The time is when Lord Ram and Lakshman ji, as young men, are staying with the sage Vishwamitra, for the protection of the Yagnas. That task completed, sage Vishwamitra takes the two brothers on a journey to Mithila (also known as Janakpur). There is a swyamvar contest for deciding the marriage partner of Sita ji, daughter of the most famous and wise King Janak. Sage Vishwamitra arrives in Janakpur with the two brothers, and is hosted by the King himself. Next day, early morning, Lord Ram and Lakshman go to the pushp vatika to gather some flowers for the morning pooja to be done by sage Vishwamitra. At the same time, Sita ji is also coming to attend the pooja ceremony at the temple of Gauri Maa which is situated in the same pushp vatika. As she is emerging from the temple to return to the
palace, the two eternal companions come face to face, and see each other for the first time.

The sages have written very simply about this episode. And learned commentators have provided many divine insights into it. But of course,
when we come to Hindi cinema, nothing short of a song is going to be sufficient to present this scene. So here is the love song that Lord Ram,
sings for Sita ji, in the imagination of the poet. A rare song indeed, which has been traced acquired with some effort. Enjoy.

Song-Hey priye tumhaare swaagat ko (Ram Darshan)(1950) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Ramesh Gupta, MD-D C Dutt

Lyrics

hey priye tumhaare swaagat ko. . .
hain pran mere taiyyaar
maine dekha hai aaj chaand
dharti par pehli baar

taaron ke jhurmut dhoondh rahe
chandaa ko gagan ataari mein
mere aangan mein chaand ugaa
andhiyaara hai shrishti saar mein
phir jhan jhan jhan jhan jhanak utthhe
meri mann veena ke taar
maine dekha hai aaj chaand
dharti par pehli baar

ghabraawo nahin muskaao zaraa
ab ham se nazar churaao nahin
hai yug yug ki pehchaan
nahin hai anjaan aji sharmaao nahin
nainon ko nain bataa denge
ye jeet huyi ya haar
maine dekha hai aaj chaand
dharti par pehli baar

main bhramar nahin ras ka lobhi
main patang hoon jal jaaunga
main paagal premi hoon tera
kalpana ka swarg banaaungaa
phir hum dono ko irhsaa se
dekhega sab sansaar
maine dekha hai aaj chaand
dharti par pehli baar

hey priye tumhaare swaagat ko. . .
hain pran mere tayyaar
maine dekha hai aaj chaand
dharti par pehli baar

Really a good presentation of a trivial thing to make it worth reading.
