“Neeli” (1950) was directed by Ratibhai Punatar for Ranjit Films Company. The movie had Dev Anand, Suraiya, Agha, Shyama, Dulari, Cuckoo etc in it.

Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie.

This song is a lively song which is mainly sung by G M Durrani and Chorus, with Suraiyya also joining in towards the end. Surjit Sethi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S Mohinder (though myswar for some inexplicable reason mentions S Manohar as the music director of this movie).

Only the audio of this song is available. From the harmonium and dance music in this song, it appears to be a dance song (perhaps a roadside tamasha song). I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

teri zaalim im im
nigaahon ne
ho teri
ho teri zaalim nigaahon ne
haaye re teri zaalim
ho teri zaalim nigaahon ne
haaye re teri zaalim nigaahon ne

hamko ghaayal kiya
dil ko tadpa diya
haaye yeh kya kiya
teri kaafir adaaon ne
haaye re teri zaalim
ho teri zaalim nigaahon ne
haaye re teri zaalim nigaho ne

hamne muhabbat ki baaton mein aakar
ho aakar
hamne muhabbat ki baaton mein aakar
ho aakar
apne bhole se dil ko lutaakar lutaakar
apne bhole se dil ko lutaakar lutaakar
pyaar kiya hai
dard liya hai
yeh kya kiya ho dulaare ae
teri kaafir adaaon ne
haaye re teri zaalim
ho teri zaalim nigaahon ne
haaye re teri zaalim nigahon ne

raat ko jab chamkenge taare ho taare
raat ko jab chamakenge taare ho taare
raah takoongi main gesu sanwaare sanwaare
raah takoongi main gesu sanwaare sanwaare
ae ae
chupke se aana
dekhe na zamaana
sakhiyaan(?) dil ka fasaana
teri kaafir adaao ne

haaye re teri zaalim
ho teri zaalim nigaahon ne
haaye re teri zaalim nigaahon ne

Thanks for posting this beautiful quwaali from “Nili’, which brings lovely memories from my college days.
We had organized a singing group in our collage and this quwaali was a ‘taquia kalaam’ for our group and always started our program with it. One lady professor had beautiful eyes and she was our ‘nishana’.
The best part of the story is that she mentioned and appreciated our group at the farewell function and requested us to sing it once more. !!!

My mother loved this film and told me she felt bad why it was a flop. She had seen it in 1950 in the Liberty Cinema in Bombay ad the cinema was literally empty. The story of “Nili” was adapted from the famous Pygmalion story of George Bernard Shaw whereby Dev Anand finds Suraiya as beggar girl on the streets and takes her home to educate and train her. This song was picturised on Suraiya and some street beggars. Dev Anand was out and Suraya hears these singers and leaves the house and joins them. Dev Anand returns and is angered to see her dancing with them after taking all the efforts to train her.

The above mentioned story line resembles(i.e.,some shades only) with Dev Anand,Tina Munim`s MANPASAND(1980) story,Am I right ?
