Yes, I return to 1948 again today. A song that has been pending, for want of being located. And now I have it. The film is ‘Chaand Sitaare’. And lo, what a gem of a song has been discovered. Every time such a thing happens, i.e. coming across an unheard and a very obscure gem, there is such a feeling of exhilaration on the discovery. And also, the reassurance that there still are many such songs waiting out there in what we call the ocean of Hindi film music, all waiting for someone to pick them up and bring up to the surface and to the attention of the listeners. Oh yes, I am sure many people with a long association with this love of Hindi film music would have heard of this and other such lost gems. But getting to it and finding out that it is now available online, gives such a sense of accomplishment.
Above, I used the phrase “. . . for want of being located”. Let me qualify that a little. It should be “. . . for the want of being identified”.
Actually this song is, let’s say, a victim of an error. In the Geet Kosh, this song is duly listed, but the singer’s name is incorrectly printed. For that reason, when Harish Raghuvanshi ji did the compilation of the Mukesh Geet Kosh, he also missed out this song. This error was located quite some time after the publication of both the Geet Kosh 2nd volume and the Mukesh Geet Kosh. As I have been working to track down the rare and difficult to locate Mukesh songs, I have been in constant communication with Harish ji. In one of the exchanges a little while ago, he pointed me towards this error and towards this song.
And so the next step after this confirmation was to locate the song itself. Harish ji, in fact had a complete collection of Mukesh songs on cassettes, a part of which was damaged at one point in time, when there was a flood situation in his hometown and his residence was effected. He lost some very valuable music in that episode. But he always encourages me to search for such songs, because he knows that these songs are out there.
After checking with some sources, I finally found this song in my own collection. Well the story behind that is – the collection is not so well
organized 🙂 in recent couple of years, with continuous addition of material from many different sources. There simply is not enough time to
sort and organize everything. But then over the months, I have evolved what you may call a ‘haphazard’ searching method which sometimes leads to success. That is what happened with this song too. But I am glad, for the prodding by Harish ji, that I am finally able to locate it and bring it up for posting.
The film ‘Chaand Sitaare’ is from the banner of Ravindra Art Productions, Bombay. The film is directed by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor, who also shared the credits for the lyrics writing for the film. There are eight songs in this film, and the writing is shared between Aziz Kashmiri and IC Kapoor. This song is penned by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor. The music direction is by Premnath. As per the Geet Kosh records, seven of the eight songs are in female voices, shared between Geeta Roy, Lata and Shamshad Begum. This eighth song is apparently this film’s only song in a male voice. The Geet Kosh lists the name of the singer as Kapoor, but clearly that is either a transcription error or a printer’s devil.
The cast of the film includes Jeevan, Manorama, Rajan Haksar, Niranjan Sharma, Anita, Satish, Leela amongst others. And given this line up of
actors, my intuition is that this song is probably performed on screen by Jeevan. Being billed as the leading man, and this being the only song in male voice, it is highly likely that Jeevan has performed this song. It is a guess, and I would request other knowledgeable readers to comment upon and add more information.
And so, another Mukesh gem, so far hidden in the darkness of anonymity. Enjoy !

Friends,
I would like to make one corrections to the above write up. In the article I have mentioned that this song was originally mis-identified in the Geet Kosh, and was subsequently left out of the first edition of Mukesh Geet Kosh. These statements are partially correct.
It is true that the Geet Kosh volume carries the name of the singer incorrectly. But the error was identified before Mukesh Geet Kosh was published, and this song is very much listed in the MGK compilation.
(Just to ensure that the correct refernces are identified and relied upon).

I HAVE ADDED THIS NEWLY FOUND NUMBER TO MY CHEST.I HAVE HEARD A BEAUTIFUL SONG OF SHAMSHAD ” MAN BHULI KATHEN YAAD NA KAR” FROM FILM ” DOOSRI SHAADI’ WRITTEN BY I C KAPOOR. BUT MD PREMNATH IS NEW TO ME.THANKS FOR FOR SUCH UPLOADS. YE DIL MANGE MORE…..

HFGK has subsequently corrected the entry and my HFGK vol II mentions Mukesh as the singer of the said song.
