The Voice of Mukesh #59
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

At last I have been able to locate and acquire this song that has been pending in this journey of Mukesh songs, for quite some time. This song from 1948, could not be showcased earlier. There is one version available on the YouTube, but that is just one third of the song, only about one minute of play. (I have written about this behavior of some people, who will post partial songs online, and then wait for others to get in touch with them. There is a commercial angle involved here). Any way, I have now been able to get this song from another friend and fan of Mukesh.

The song is from the film ‘Jeene Do’, a 1948 film produced under the banner of Jai Hind Chitra, Bombay and is directed by Adi F Kika and KA Majid. This is the first song of this film to be posted here on this blog. The case of actors includes Menka Devi, Harish, Pannalal, Kaiser, Shanta Kunwar, Ghulam Rasool, Faizbai, Leela Gupte, and Chhota Shankar etc. There are nine songs in this film, all of them from the pen of Shewan Rizvi. This film has music from the baton of two music directors – DV Gadkar and Shokan Hussain ‘Dehlavi’. This song is composed by DV Gadkar. The name does not ring a bell, although I can see that there is one song already posted, with his name as the music director. I would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about him.

The song is a very passionate indictment of God. The words depict a situation in which apparently, a cremation is not being allowed to happen for the lack of money to even buy the ‘kafan’ (burial cloth) for the body of the deceased. The words from Shewan Rizvi are heart rending, and the voice of Mukesh adds such a pathos to the rendering. One of the most painful and sad songs that I have heard.

(Note: The record from which this recording was made is apparently scratchy, to the extent that the needle had likely jumped at least in one place. One half of one of the lines is not heard.)

Song-Ae duniya bataa de hamen Bhagwaan kahaan hai (Jeene Do)(1948) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shewan Rizvi, MD-D V Gadkar

Lyrics

ae duniya bataa de. . .
ae duniya bataa de hamen
bhagwan kahaan hai
bhagwan kahaan hai

mil jaaye to ye laash gareebi ki dikha den
bhagwan hai kaisa tu bataa kaisa khudaa hai
tu kaisa khudaa hai

gar tere ameeron ke liye tera jahaan hai ae ae ae
gar tere ameeron ke liye tera jahaan hai
phir tu hi bata duniya gareebon ki kahaan hai
bhagwan kahaan hai

bechain hain hum chain se hai saara zamaana
chain se hai saara zamaana
majboor hain bekas hain sunaayen kise dukhdaa
itni badi duniya mein na do gaz mila kapdaa
haathon pe khuli laash hai
haathon pe khuli laash hai
khaamosh zubaan hai
insaaf tera ae mere bhagwaan kahaan hai
bhagwaan kahaan hai

thukraayi gayee haaye yahaan bhi to gareebi
aaraam se jalne na diya marnaa to kaisa
jalne ke liye bhi to yahaan chaahiye paisa
hum seene mein dil rakhte hain
hum seene mein dil rakhte hain
na munh mein zubaan hai
paise ke ye hain log dayaa in mein kahaan hai
bhagwaan kahaan hai

Atul ji,

As always, Harish ji has been very prompt in responding to complete the half sentence in the song. Many thanks for his diligent follow up to our blog.

The line
(. . .) duniya ne chita bhi
should read

Please update.

Thanks and regards
Sudhir
