“Deewaana” (1952) was produced and directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Suresh, Suraiya, Sumitra Devi, Shyam Kumar, Ramesh, Madan Puri, Banerjee, Amirbai Karnataki, Amir Ali etc in it.

Seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth song from the movie.

This is a “remonstrating with the almighty” genre of song which sung by Suraiyya. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

Only the audio of this song is available. It is clear that the song is picturised on Suraiyya herself.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-O soye bhagwan jaag (Deewaana)(1952) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

jaago o
jaago o o o
jaago o bhagwan

lagi hai man mandir mein aag re
o soye bhagwan jaag re
o soye bhagwan jaag
o bhagwaan
o bhagwaan
bhagwaan re
o soye bhagwan jaag

main dil ki fariyaad se teri
neend udaane aayi hoon
phool nahin angaare tujh per
aaj chadhaane aayi hoon
lut gaye mere pyaar ke gehne
ujda mera suhaag re
o soye bhagwan jaag
lagi hai
man mandir mein aag

kaisa khewanhaar bana tu
naiya ka na hosh raha
doob gayi main beech bhanwar mein
phir bhi t khaamosh raha
maine tujhi se aas lagayi
phoote mere bhaag re
o soye bhagwan jaag

duniya waale tu na sunega
haal agar fariyaadi ka
main duniya se badla loongi
khud apni barbaadi ka
aag laga doongi main jag mein
gaakar deepak raag re
o soye bhagwan jaag
lagi hai
man mandir mein aag

This song is not pictured on Suraiya. It seems like Sumitra Devi.

Yesteryear actress Nanda, who has been a part of hits like Teen Deviyaan, Gumnaam and many more died at the age of 75 in Mumbai on Tuesday (March 25).
The 75-year-old actress died this morning at her Andheri residence here.
“It is shocking as she did not have any history of illness,” a relative of hers told on condition of anonymity.
Nanda, who was last seen in ‘Prem Rog’ in 1983, was born on January 8, 1939 in Kolhapur, Maharastra. She was born to Marathi actor and director Master Vinayak and was the niece of filmmaking pioneer V Shantaram.
The actress was briefly engaged to ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ director Manmohan Desai before he died in 1994 and remained unmarried ever since.
Nanda started as a child artist and got her first break as a grown up in V Shantaram’s 1956 film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’.
With the success of ‘Toofan Aur Diya’, Nanda did not look back and went on to establish herself in the Hindi film industry with hits like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’, ‘Gumnaam’, ‘Teen Deviyan’, ‘The Train’, ‘Mandir’, ‘Angarey’, ‘Ram Laxman’, ‘Bandi’, ‘Ittefaq’, ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Prayashchit’, ‘Ahista Ahista’, ‘Prem Rog’ and ‘Mazdoor’ among several others.
She excelled most often as a supporting star but also found great acceptance and popularity as a lead heroine in later years.
Her identification with the title role of ‘Choti Bahen’ which stuck in real life. She shared screen space with noted actors like Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Rajesh Khanna and Shashi Kapoor with whom she starred in eight films.
Their pairing in ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ was a huge success and inspired ‘Raja Hindustani’. It was for the first time that the actress played a westernised role.
Nanda was nominated for Filmfare Award five times for her performance in Bhabhi (1957), Aanchal (1960), Ittefaq (1969), Ahista Ahista (1981) and Prem Rog (1982).
She won Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for ‘Aanchal’.
After a small role in Manoj Kumar’s 1972 film ‘Shor’, Nanda reduced her work in films. Her other films such as ‘Chhalia’ and ‘Naya Nasha’ did not work.
She made a brief return to acting in 1982 as a character actress where she played the onscreen mothe of Padmini Kolhapure in ‘Ahista Ahista’, ‘Mazdoor’ and ‘Prem Rog’.
Nanda’s last rites will be performed at 4 pm at the Oshiwari crematorium
