Aah, the wonderful world of Chitragupt’s melodies. A composer par excellence, whose creations do never cease to surprise, as one continues to come encounter heretofore songs that seemed to have got lost in the folds of time. This song today is a very old friend from the radio listening days, that dipped below the horizons of memories for some time.
And then, it takes a nudge and a push by AK ji to remind one to search and pull it out of forgotten folders, dust it and then put it up for listening by eager friends who are now waiting for some weeks after having nudged me, to get their ears to this curiously pleasant melody.
‘Main Shaadi Karne Chalaa’, a film from 1962, that has become remarkable on account of its elusiveness and difficulty in tracing its video version or the complete set of songs. The film is from the banner of Wadia Movietone, and is directed by Roop K Shorey. The main cast of actors includes IS Johar, Sayeeda Khan, Rajendra Nath, Feroz Khan, Praveen Chaudhary, Tabassum, Malika, Mumtaz, Badri Prasad, Durga Khote, Manju, Prem Chopra, Vivek. The film has a set of nine delightful songs, all penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The music composition, aah well, already mentioned above, is by Chitragupt. Four songs of this film are already showcased on this blog. Here is the fifth song to come on board from this film.
In one of his earlier comments, Nayan Yagnik ji has summarized the story line of this film as follows.
I.S. Johar & Saeeda Khan are hero heroine. Saeeda has several unmarried sisters, so it is not possible for the pair to marry before the marriages of other sisters. In his effort to get his own marriage accomplshed, IS Johar has to search for other grooms for his sisters-in-law to-be. The comedy situations follow one after the other as IS Johar pursues prospective grooms and at the end he succeeds. Feroze Khan is paired with Mumtaz, one of the
sisters.
The video of this film is not yet traceable, and so it is not feasible to comment on the on-screen performance of this song. I request other friends and readers who may have seen this film earlier, to please add more information about the picturization of this song.
So listen and wonder, how simple and pleasing the melody used to be.
Enjoy.
Song-Main hoon akeli kis kis ko samjhaaun haay rabba (Main Shaadi Karne Chala)(1962) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Chitragupta
Lyrics
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
koi to thhaame hauley hauley dil
koi pukaare kabhi to gori mil
koi to thhaame hauley hauley dil
koi pukaare kabhi to gori mil
main rukti jhukti ghoonghat mein sharmaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
chaandni mere gaalon mein base
raat nasheeli nayan mein hanse
chaandni mere gaalon mein base
raat nasheeli nayan mein hanse
ye jalwe le kar kis dil mein chhup jaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
chham chham pag main rakhti huyi
champe ki daali lachakti huyi
chham chham pag main rakhti huyi
champe ki daali lachakti huyi
main kajron waali mud mud takti jaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
main hoon akeli
kis kis ko samjhaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa
ek roop ke do chor hain
kit jaaun haaye rabbaa

I had seen this movie way back in 1962 just after its release. If my memory does not fail me in this long span of 52 odd years, I think the song is filmed on I S Johar in the following sequence of events:In order to evade the police or some antisocial elements who are chasing them: I S Johar and Rajendra Nath flee and land at the stage of a theatre where some dance rehearsal is on. The duo overpower the artists of the dance party. I S Johar dresses like a female dancer and starts dancing in the disguise of a damsel singing the subject song.

Hi Friends,
The plot of this movie is eerily similar to that of Galatta Kalyanam, a Tamil movie starring Sivji Ganesan, J.Jayalalitha (current CM of Tamil Nadu), Nagesh, Cho Ramasamy (noted political analyst and commentator) amongst others. It was directed by C.V.Rajendran, a cousin of C.V.Sridhar, noted film maker and had a very successful run.
The story behind making of Galatta Kalyanam goes that the plot was developed from a skit that was staged by the core team that worked in the film, to entertain our soldiers during one of the wars in the 1960s.
What is intriguing is that Galatta Kalyanam was released only in 1968, which means probably the skit could have been done during the 1965 war. Which leads us to the question, was the skit itself inspired by the movie under discussion, or were both inspired by some other movie?
Cheers,
Karthik Bhatt
