Chaandni Raaten : Song no. 5
——————————-

Song no. 05 of the series is a non – film song or rather a ghazal. Singer is Mohammed Rafi, judging by the voice it appear to be late 60’s recording. As the date of the song is not available anywhere that I could find, just making a guess. The poet of this very predictable ghazal is Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri. Now it the turn of music Directors name. The link on youtube is giving the name as Iqbal Qurieshi, and the comments on the youtube imply that the composer is Chhote Iqbal. Myswar.com and the excel sheets are playing it safe and giving the name as just “Iqbaal”. May be the knowledgeable readers of the blog will be able to clarify the name of the composer. By looking in the myswar.com I found the year of the song which is 1970.

Rafi sahab’s command over singing ghazals is never in doubt. For myself the ‘ghazal’s to ‘Do Badan’ are enough to convince me of his superiority. Further on from ‘Do Badan” days many singers achieved their name and fame purely as ‘Ghazal singers outside the realms of hindi film music. In the context of hindi film songs Talat Mehmood is acknowledged as the ‘Ghazal King”. No quarrels with that, as I consider ‘Shaam-e-gham ki Qasam aaj ghamgheen hain ham ‘ by Talat as the ultimate in filmy ghazals followed by Lata’s ” dikhaayi diye yoon ke bekhud kiya “. There are many more to follow. Sometime in the distant future I plan to make a list of my favourite filmy ghazals and post them in the comments of this post 🙂 . Madan Mohan is not far away, as ‘Adalat’ and “jahaan Ara ” are a definite in that list.

By the way, there was a Talat Mehmood song too coming up in this series, but that song is already posted in the blog, as I was looking for it in the wrong place with wrong spelling of the name of the film. It has just now occurred to me that so far I have not written a post on a Talat Mehmood song, which shall be rectified. Artist in the golden era of HFM were good, better, best and genius’s. Classification is not simple but could be done with judicial tact.

As of now I am not having a Talat Mehmood song that fits the criteria of this current series. If some of the readers can help me locate one such song, it will save a lot of time as I am currently trying to find it on myswar.com.

Take the case of this ghazal rendered by Mohammed Rafi Sahab. He is single handedly lifting it beyond the composer’s and the poet’s capabilties. I am really beginning to realise only now after so many years of being a Rafi fan, the way he starts his songs. Always, the start will create the mood, as it does with the alaap in the beginning. It is brief, but is more than enough or just about perfect. Simply beautiful is the word.

Not being a huge fan of non-film songs, this one ghazal has raised the expectation off other non-film Ghazals sung by Rafi Sahab, which I am yet to hear.

Song-Teri to chaand sitaaron mein baat hoti hai (Rafi NFS)(1970) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri, MD-Chhote Iqbal

Lyrics

aaaa aaa aaa aaa
aaaa

Teri to chaand sitaaron mein baat hoti hai ae ae
teri to chaand sitaaron mein baat hoti hai
chaman chaman mein
bahaaron mein baat hoti hai ae ae
chaman chaman mein

mere junoon se woh shohrat hai tere jalwon ki
mere junoon se woh shohrat hai tere jalwon ki ee
jidhar bhi jaao hazaaron mein baat hoti hai ae
chaman chaman mein

sitam woh karte hain jis par badi tawajjo se
sitam wo karte hain jis par badi tawajjo se ae
ye us ke oonche muqaddar ki baat hoti hai
chaman chaman mein

tere shabaab ko dekhaa sharaab chhoot gayee ee
tere shabaab ko dekhaa sharaab chhoot gayee ee
yahi sharaab ke maaron mein baat hoti hai ae ae
teri to chaand sitaaron mein baat hoti hai
chaman chaman mein
bahaaron mein baat hoti hai ae ae
chaman chaman mein

Rafi Saab excelled in singing non-film numbers and this is one example where he lifts the mood of the listener.

Nahm: What did you mean when you wrote that this is a very predictable ghazal?
