In olden days, communctions and transportation facilities were not what they are today. Most people used to remain confined to their native places for much of their lives and they did not know how people lived in other parts of the world. So they would be curious to find out about the other parts of the world. One would do that by watching movies and also by talking to people who may have come from other places.
Like for example, one new student had joined our class when I was in class VIIth. We asked him “what is your name ?”. “Rajveer Singh”- he replied. Our next question-“You have come from which place?”. “Rajasthan”- he replied. “Do you know Salim Durrani ?”- This question came from Sanjay Dutta, our inhouse cricket expert. “No”- replied Rajveer Singh. “What ! you have come from Rajasthan and you do not know Salim Durrani”- remarked Sanjay Dutta, looking at Rajveer Singh with a look of comtempt and pity. 🙂
Much of our knowledge of other places was through movies and also through books and magazines etc and people belived what they saw in movies and read in books. But much of the “knowledge” that people had was based on hearsay. Like for example, we were told that South was Madras, Bangaal was the land of “Kaala Jaadoo”, Punjab was the land of warriors. The countries outside India were abvanced because even the kids there spoke in English etc etc. 🙂
When I was growing up as a kid, I had not gone out of my district for the first twelve years or so of my life. Then I went to Calcutta (the nearest metropolitan city, some 400 kms to the east) some three or four times. When I would tell people that I had been to Calcutta four times, people would look at me with admiration and disbelief as if I was Marco Polo. 🙂
It was in january 1976 that I went to Bombay for the first time with my father and two of his colleagues. It was the first visit to that place for all of us. In addition to watching the famous landmarks of Bombay, we came to realise for the fist time that there were things like slums too in Bombay, something that we were not aware of till then.
When I came back and told my class mates about my visit to Bombay, the first question that I was asked was “Did you meet Hema Malini”. They could not believe their ears when I replied in the negative. 🙂
Here is a cute and lovely song from 1947 where a lady, living in Delhi wants to go and visit Bombay while her husband tries to convince her that Delhi was the best. All your beloved relatives, including the brother of your nanad, lives here, he tells her. But K L Saigal and Suraiyya live there- the lady tells her husband.
Here is this fun song from “Doli” (1947). The song is sung by Zohrabai Ambalewaali and G M Durrani (no relation to Salim Durrani) :). Nazim Panipati is the lyricist of this fun song. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)
Dilli ki galiyon mein
Dilli ki galiyon mein
jiya naahin laage
ho jiya naahin laage
main to dekhoongi bambai
main dekhoongi bambai
main to dekhoongi bambai
main dekhoongi bambai
wadaa karke ho o ho ho
waadaa karke beet gaye hain
March April aur May
main to dekhungi Bambai
main dekhoongi Bambai
main to dekhungi Bambai
main dekhoongi Bambai
arre Dilli na chhod
ye to Apna hai desh
chale ham tum Bambai
wahaan dekhenge race
yahaan dil ke tamaashe
yahaan nainon ke khel
yahaan dil ke tamaashe
yahaan nainon ke khel
yahaan Qutub Sahab ki laat
wahaan daadar aur Parel
yahaan Qutub Sahab ki laat
wahaan daadar aur parel
mil jaayenge ho ho ho
mil jaayenge us nagari mein
tere jaise kayi
main to dekhoongi bambai
main dekhoongi bambai
main to dekhoongi bambai
main dekhoongi Bambai
Yahaan sakhiyaan bhi hain
tori maiyya bhi hai
ho o o o
yahaan sakhiyaan bhi hain
tori maiyya bhi hai
yahaan tori nanadiya ka
bhaiyya bhi hai
yahaan tori nanadiya ka
bhaiyya bhi hai
wahaan isaq bhi hai aur
ruppaiyya bhi hai
wahaan isaq bhi hai aur
ruppaiyya bhi hai
wahaan Sehgal bhi hai
aur Suraiyya bhi hai
wahaan Sehgal bhi hai
aur Suraiyya bhi hai
kya karoongi ho ho ho
kya karoongi Dilli mein
yaiyyee yaiyyee yaiyyee yaiyyee yaiyyee
main to dekhoongi Bambai
main dekhungi Bambai
main to dekhoongi Bambai
main dekhoongi bambai
Dilli ki galiyon mein
Dilli ki galiyon mein
jiya naahin laage
ho jiya naahin laage
main to dekhoongi Bambai
main dekhoongi Bambai
main to dekhungi Bambai
main dekhoongi Bambai
