Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 5

(1973 – Solo)

Seventies was the decade of change, from the very subtle to sweeping transformations. The stars of the sky since 1950s, started to age and lose their glow and popularity. A new crop of youngsters was taking their place. Fortunes were changing, and so was the face of Hindi film music. Through the 50s and 60s, if Johnny Walker was in a film, then it was almost certain he would have a song. ‘Anand’ (1971) changed that. Issabhai Suratwala, the middle aged theatre company owner, went through this poignant tale with a role that had no opportunities for a song. Then, the number of Shammi Kapoor starrers as a hero began to fade. By the time ‘Manoranjan’ (1974) was released, Shammi was now a ‘fat’ character actor. Although still retaining the twinkle, the smile and the crack of humor, the appearance of a bulky posture and a accentuating beard was really a far cry from ‘Yahoo’. And the most significant departure came when in 1971, ‘Jaane Anajaane’ was released. The solo “Jaane Anjaane Log Miley, Par Koi Milaa Na Apna” performed by Shammi on screen carried the playback voice of Kishore Kumar. I remember now, in the ‘Filmfare’ magazine, a photo was published of the recording, showing Kishore Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, with the caption – ‘Shammi with his new ghost voice’. At that time, I did not understand the meaning of these words, as I do now.

The music directors sensed the change in the winds, and slowly more and more of them started to enroll Kishore Kumar for playback singing. Rafi Sb was not out, but of course the overall space had now to be shared. Numbers can tell a specific tale, and I will try to bring in the numbers analysis in one of the coming installments of this series. However, it is also true that a crop of newcomers also took on Rafi Sb as their playback voice. Rishi Kapoor was introduced as the teenaged star-crossed lover in ‘Bobby’ in 1973. RK had made a shift away from Shankar Jaikishan, on to Laxmi Pyaare, and they introduced Shailendra Singh as the voice of Chintu. As the decade progressed, Rishi moved away from Shailendra Singh, and more towards Kishore Kumar. But music directors continued to use Rafi Sb’s voice also for him, all the way down to ‘Karz’ in 1980 – “Dard e Dil Dard e Jigar, Dil Mein Jagaaya Aapne” .

The song that is selected for the year 1973 is from the film ‘Gharibi Hataao’. The interesting thing about this film is the this is the debut film for Sharda as a music director. Sharda went on to do about 8 or 10 films during the rest of the decade. This film also had a crop of newcomers, with lead roles by Rajvansh and Rachna. Narendranath (younger brother to Prem Nath and Rajendranath) had already made his debut in 1972 in the film ‘Jawaani Deewani’.

This gem of a song has been penned by Kafeel Azar. On screen, this song is performed by Rajvansh. The occasion apparently is the birthday party of his heartthrob, Rachna. Narnedranath is also present, along with a group of friends. Rajvansh gifts this song to her, and midway through the proceedings, there is a tense exchange in which others ridicule Rajvansh for bringing a song as a gift because he does not have money to buy a real gift. The audio version of the song has two antaraas, which is the version that was generally played on the radio where I had heard it for the first time. The video clip from the film shows this unfriendly banter between friends, and then Rajvansh departing from the party, singing a third antaraa.

A gem of a song with all the verve and passion that only Rafi Sb could bring into music.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Ye anjuman ye khushiyaan ye rang ye sitaare (Gareebi Hataao)(1973) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kafeel Azar, MD-Sharda

Lyrics

Ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
hon aapko mubaarak
lamhe ye pyaare pyaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
hon aapko mubaarak
lamhe ye pyaare pyaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan

mehko ban ke kali si
khushboo bikhero jahaan mein
mehko ban ke kali si
khushboo bikhero jahaan mein
har din ho khoobsoorat
har shab ho kehkashaan mein
taare nazar lagaayen
sooraj nazar utaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan

dil se dil ka ho sauda
aankhon mein jaage ujaala
dil se dil ka ho sauda
aankhon mein jaage ujaala
chaandi ki baat chhodo
chaandi ka dil hai kaala
tohfa yahaan pe koi
kaabil nahin tumhaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
hon aapko mubaarak
lamhe ye pyaare pyaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan

[dialogue. . . in video version]

samjhoon apna tumhen kyun
tum bhi inhin mein ho shaamil
samjhoon apna tumhen kyun
tum bhi inhin mein ho shaamil
thehri ho tum jahaan par
meri nahin wo manzil
sun lo judaa judaa hain
ab raaste hamaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
hon aapko mubaarak
lamhe ye pyaare pyaare
ye anjuman ye khushiyaan
ye rang ye nazaare
