Kitni raahat hai dil toot jaane ke baad
zindagi se mile maut aane ke baad

Aah! the bliss of being free of illusions. As if someone has removed the coloured glasses from my eyes through which the world used to look colourful. The feeling is not always pleasant but it is a honest and truer state to be in. Keeping one's eyes closed so that one is able to avoid the unpleasant things and pretend that all is well, is a self defeating attitude. Once the truth is out in the open and accepted than it is something one faces and deals with in our own way. Out of the clouds of delusions. Only then the correct runway can be found and safe landing in possible.

This is a non-film ghazal by Mohammad Rafi sahab, which is written by Shamim Jaipuri. Taaj Ahmed Khan is the the composer. I heard this ghazal for the first time a few days ago. It appealed and I thought of writing the post.

Some years ago, in the office, we used to play songs on the computer. Yes, at some places sometimes the atmosphere is so informal even in offices that listening to songs and music while working is fine, if all those in close vicinity are agreeable and have similar tastes. We had copied some MP3's in the computer and used to play the songs usually in the post lunch session. One of the senior colleague, revealed that he is a member of Shankar-Jaikishan fan club of Dombivili and is a regular at the club's programmes. I just had to ask him what he thought of Mohammed Rafi vis-a-vis S-J songs, if not in general. He gave my question due consideration and said that 'wo ruk ruk ke gaate thhe'. I said if the song required pauses than may be he did or to give correct emphasis on the words, it needed a split second holding of breath. He did not elaborate the point or did not want to sound too critical. But the concept stayed with me and sometimes i tend to look for such gaps in Rafi Sahab's songs which are new for me. The colleague also revealed that he had met Rafi Sahab's son years ago when the later visited the offices in connection with some imported car held by the customs department. He was lamenting that he should have asked Rafi Sahab's son for some rare records which are not available anywhere.

In my friends circle, I was known to make statements like 'Rafi ko nahin sunaa to kya sunaa…..'. The immediate response would be, "why there are lot of good singers like ….. " This would result in my making more claims such as "There are many singers who are very good, but no one is quite in the class of Rafi Sahab" etc etc. Oft repeated refrain in such situation is that one should not compare among singers. Right , one shouldnt' coz there is simply no comparison. 🙂 End of discussion.

Now a days, I am more circumspect and do not put myself in the situation where I can be cornered into defending Rafi Sahab's position and stature. If any such situation arises I start quoting songs, till someone hastily changes the subject. 🙂

raat ka maajra kis se poochhun ‘Shamim’
kya bani bazm par mere aane ke baad

Shamim is the ‘takhallus’ meaning fragrance or a being which carries fragrance of ‘khuloos'(sincere emotions) .

kya bani bazm par mere aane ke baad

What happened to the gathering after I left it. How did they survive ?

Song-Kitni raahat hai dil toot jaane ke baad (Rafi NFS0(1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shamim Jaipuri, MD-Taaj Ahmed Khan

Lyrics

Kitni raahat hai
dil toot jaane ke baad
kitni raahat hai
dil toot jaane ke baad
zindagi se miley
maut aane ke baad
kitni raahat hai
dil toot jaane ke baad

lazzat-e-sajdaa-e-sang-e-dar
kya kahein
lazzat-e-sajdaa-e-sang-e-dar
kya kahein
hosh hi kab rahaa
sar jhukaane ke baad
hosh hi kab rahaa
sar jhukaane ke baad

kya huaa har masarrat agar chhin gayee
kya huaa har masarrat agar chhin gayee
aadmi ban gayaa gham uthhaane ke baad
aadmi ban gayaa gham uthhaane ke baad

raat ka maajra kis se poochhoon ‘Shamim’
raat ka maajra kis se poochhoon ‘Shamim’
kya bani bazm par mere aane ke baad
kya bani bazm par mere aane ke baad
zindagi se miley
maut aane ke baad
kitni raahat hai
dil toot jaane ke baad

Sadgi ko soz me
Dal deeje
Aur awaaz ko
Kuen me
Kaan ke baal se
Awaaz jaaye bhitar
Aur ye ghazal gungunayen
Ya tahe dil baithe Rafi se kahen
Please” Rafi sahab zara karam
Inayat kar deeje !
