Hindi movie music was predominanatly based on classical music during the first decade (viz 1930s). It was in early 1940s that Ghulam Haider introduced Punjabi Folk music based songs in “Khazaanchi” (1941). This paradigm shift was avidly lapped up by public and this paved the way for folk music based songs in Hindi movies. Ghulam Haider was followed by Naushad who introdced UP folk music in his compositions. That opened the floodgates and then we had different music directors composing songs based on folk music from different regions.

S D Burman was one of the music directors who began to introduce folk music in his of eastern parts of the songs. He drew inspiration from the folk music of the eastern parts of the country.

It is easy to form an impression that S D Burman only utilised folk music of eastern parts, but that is not true. I am aware of S D Burman compositions that draw inspiration from Punjabi folk tunes, for instance.

Here is an S D Burman composition based on Gujarati folk dance of Dandiya. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. The movie is “Society” (1955).

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji

aa aa aa
aa aa aa
dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye
arre

Are
waah
waah
waah

dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji

haay haay
dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye Arre

Ruk ruk ruk
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
Ikde

nakko
nakko
nakko
nakko
kakko nakko

Us taraf gagan pe
kaale baadlon ka shor hai
O o o
baadlon ka shor hai

Is taraf dilon mein
mast dhadkanon ka zor hai
O o o
dhadkanon ka zor hai

roothne ki rut gayi
ab to maan jaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye arre
Arre
Waah
Waah
Waah
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
ikde

nakko
nakko
nakko
nakko
nakko nakko

kachchi kachchi boondiyon ki
ras bhari phuhaar mein
O o o o
ras bhari phuhaar mein

aur hi mazaa hai
do dilon ki jeet haar mein
O o o
do dilon ki jeet haar mein

zindagi ki har khushi
daanv par lagaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye arre
arre
waah
waah
waah
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
Ikde ye
Ikde

nakko
nakko
nakko
nakko
nako nakko

aha ha ha haa
aha ha ha haa
aha ha ha haa
aha ha ha haa
huyi huyi
huyi huyi
huyi huyi
huyi huyi

Kho na jaaye ye samaa
Is samay se kaam lo
O o o
Is samay se kaam lo

jis se mil gaya ho dil
uska haath thhaam lo
O o o
uska haath thhaam lo

mast ho ke do ghadi
khud ko bhool jaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye
arre

arre
waah
waah
waah

dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji

Haay Haay
dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye are

chup
chup
chup

dil nahin to na sahi
aankh to milaao ji
saawan ki raat hai
Oye are
arre
waah
waah
waah
