Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
At the turning of the decade of 1950s, changes, as always, were in the offing. Careers of established stalwarts of the ilk of Anil Biswas and C Ramchandra were on the downward trend. And a new crop of music magicians were becoming visible on the horizon. As the calendar clock reached 1960, two duo teams started to make their presence felt. The elder partner of one of these teams, Kalyan ji Veer ji Shah had already made a debut as a solo music director back in 1958. He made his presence felt with his compositions in two films that year – ‘Post Box 999’ and ‘Samraat Chandragupt’. In 1959, he worked on three films, under his solo direction – ‘O Tera Kya Kehna’, ‘Bedard Zamaana Kya Jaane’ and ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Baat’. In the same year, he also teamed up with his younger sibling, Anand ji, and the duo team of Kalyan ji Anand ji made their first appearance in three films – ‘Satta Bazaar’, ‘Madaari’ and ‘Chandrasena’.
From this point onwards, it was the duo team that created the music together, and Kalyan ji stopped taking any new films as a solo music director. However, interestingly in 1960, one film was released which carried the music of Kalyan ji as the solo music director. This film, ‘Delhi Junction’, was the last film of Kalyan ji working solo.
This song, is one of those lost memories that I came across recently. Heard as a child on the radio, I met this song just a couple of months ago, when I got the recordings of the songs of this film from my friend, Zafar Shah of Delhi. And you can imagine my delight, on having met this song again, after so many years. Or maybe, you will understand my delight, when you hear to this song.
‘Delhi Junction’ is a production from the banner of Nigaaristan (India) Films, and is directed by Mohammed Hussain. The list actors includes the following names – Ajeet, Shakeela, Nishi, Maruti, Manorama, Tiwari, Pran, Protima Devi, Murad, Rafiq, Kamal Mohan, Harun, Anwari Bai, Pal Sharma, Jagdish Kanwal, Nadir, Satish, Sadiq, Sarita, Kukku, Rajni, and Khurshid amongst others. The six songs of this film are written by four songwriters – Gulshan Bawra, PL Santoshi, Prem Dhawan and Farooque Kaiser. This song is from the pen of Farooque Kaiser. Music is by Kalyan ji Veer ji Shah. Singing voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar and chorus companions.
Now regarding the mention of the other duo that was also just at the take off point at that time. The link into this film is that the duo of Lakshmikant Pyaarelal are the assistant music directors to Kalyan ji, in this film. They were still a little way from their 1963 debut with ‘Parasmani’ and ‘Harishchandra Taramati’. And they did not take long to capture the mood and the attention of the listeners with films like ‘Dosti’, ‘Aaya Toofaan’, ‘Luteraa’, ‘Mr X in Bombay’, ‘Sant Gyaneshwar’ and ‘Hum Sab Ustad Hain’, all in the space of the three years from 1963 to 1965. By 1966, this new duo also became a force to reckon with in the industry.
Enough said – I share my delight with the invite to you to listen to this song
And enjoy.

Sudhirji,
You will rarely find a song from KA which jars the senses. They have been always tuneful and melodious.
They were good raconteur of jokes.
The singers they have helped is a legion
