Today (14 november 2014) is Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday. He was very fond of Children and so his birthday began to be celebrated as “Bal Divas” or Children’s day in India. It is clear that this day became “Children’s day” in India only after Indian Independence. I am not aware when this day was first celebrated this way. I request our senior regulars to throw light on this matter.
As for children, they are loved by all, and more so by their parents. Children are the lights that often brighten up the lives of typical parents who otherwise may not have too many things to look forward to. They dream of a future for their children that is far brighter than their own lives. They hope that their children will do well in their lives.
Hindi movies (most of them escapist in nature) often do not deal with such topics in a serious and sensitive manner. But “Koshish” (1972) was a wonderful exception. This movie told the tale of a couple (Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri). Both of them are deaf and dumb. The son born to them is fortunately normal and the two parents dote on him and bring him up lovingly and caringly. Of course, their being deaf and dumb quite often comes in the way.
Here is a song from “Koshish”(1972). The picturisation shows the proud parents seated in a hall while kids perform on stage in a school function. I love the fact that Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri are shown seated somewhere in the middle rows and not in the front row (unlike what is shown in most mainstream movies). They are looking on proudly, even if they cannot hear the song. During the interlude, Jaya finds her son going still and she enquirs from Sanjeev Kumar what was the matter. Sanjeev Kumar, equally clueless, is unable to tell what is matter. After a while, the kid resumes his singing, much to the relief of the parents.
On the occasion of “Children’s day”, here is this nice song from “Koshish” (1972). It is sung by Sushma Shreshtha and chorus and picturised on master Chintu and many other children.
Gulzar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.
This is the second and final song from this movie. With this song, “Koshish” (1972) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

zindagi hai kam

dushmani huyee toh
aasman parey hata diyaa
haan parey hatta diyaa

usse gale lagaa liyaa (Laughing Sound)
usse gale lgaa liyaa (Laughing sound)
desh dharm hai

kyun na lein issi watan mein
phir se ek janam
hum se hai watan hamaara
