Passing away seems to be such a normal part of life. But the heart is extremely distressed when this event visits upon a dear one, and also, a dear one to someone who is dear to the heart.
Early today morning, Surekha ji passed away. I got a text message from Arun ji around 9.30 am, and was stunned to read it. I called Arun ji, we had a brief talk. Surekha ji (his wife of more than four and a half decades) had been admitted to the hospital with lung infection and breathing problems, almost two weeks ago. She was in the ICU all these days, and was breathing through assistance only. In our interim conversations, Arun ji conveyed the seriousness of the situation, but he would also say – well, she may have to stay in hospital for another ten days or so, before she gets better enough to go home. But that was not to be. At 7.30 am today, the end came.
I have not met her in person, but have talked to her on the phone occasionally. When I make a telephone call to Arun ji, a few times, it was she who would pick up the phone. The manner of familiarity of her conversation with me, told me that she is familiar with me, I am sure through the conversations about this blog and its members that Arun ji would be having at home. Our exchanges were short. Besides the greetings, it was enquiries about well being, and then handing over the phone to Arun ji, or informing me in case he was busy and was unable to take the call. But one thing she would always say – “Bombay aaiye naa”. And I would respond in the affirmative, that yes, I do plan to visit soon. Not knowing what the destiny had written. Now the plans for the team meeting in Bombay are all in place, but we shall not be able to meet Surekha ji.
On behalf of all team members, our heartfelt emotions to Arun ji, and the family, on this sad and unexpected departure. Arun ji, our hearts are with you in this time of distress. Our prayers are with you, for strength and forbearance. The loss and the sorrow is the deepest in your heart, and we empathize.
Our prayers are also with Surekha ji, for everlasting peace and repose.
In India, it is traditional that we make an offering of the mortal remains of the departed, back to the nature and to the Creator. Although this is a Boatman’s song, I find this song so well connected in meaning and intent, to this last milestone of life.
ho ganga rakhiyo ye seene se lagaaye
ho teri baahon mein jo bajre bahaaye. .e. .e
The tradition of returning to the nature – offering to the fire, the winds, the skies, the earth, and most importantly, to the waters of nature.
ho gangaa tu ne hi to godi liya hai
ho tere paanion se amrit piyaa hai re. .e. .eganga
ganga ki bhari godi mein
ganga ke raahi chale re

I was very shocked to hear this news. I knew Arunji’s wife was not well, I knew she was in ICU, but I never expected this.
Arunji, our thoughts are very much with you, during this terribly difficult time for you and your family. We pray that your wife’s soul rest in everlasting peace.

Dear Arun ji,
Sorry to hear about the sad news. The loss of a beloved companion with whom one has shared a very long and happy journey of life together would leave an unfillable void. No doubt words expressed howsoever well-meant or consoling will always be insufficient to mitigate the sudden shock and the utter sense of misery and helplessness.
May Surekha ji rest in peace though her memories will be cherished for ever by you in particular and all family members and friends in general.
Sincere regards,
Avadh Lal

Sudhir ji, the news that your mail carried shocked me. Since Arun ji had resumed the ritual of sending greetings on WhatsApp, I assumed that she must be getting better. But that was not to be. Pray to God that He gives enough strength to Arun ji to bear the loss. RIP Surekha ji.
