All of us have, arguably, resorted to day dreaming at some point. Daydreaming is a short term flight of our mind and thoughts from one’s immediate existence, during which the mind moves from reality, and into the realm of fantasy, especially one of wishful happening, hopes or ambitions, imagined as coming to pass, which is experienced while being awake. Daydreaming surfaces because there is no rationing or moral policing to check them!. The state of daydreaming is between waking (with the ability to think rationally and logically) and sleeping.
Kanhaiya is an ordinary salesman, who aspires to get more business, attain higher sales targets. He comes to know that a famous starlet has moved into his neighbourhood & desires to get her endorsement for the product he sells. He then gains entry into starlet’s house. While he is left alone waiting to meet her, he watches some stills of starlet from her movies ( hung on the wall),& he starts daydreaming as the starlet’s hero. Agar aisa ho toh?
Who is Kanhaiya? He is a character enacted by Rajendranath in the film ‘Teen Bahuraniya’(1968). It is a treat to watch this day dreaming sequence, brilliantly conceptualised. Rajendranath’s enactment is quite comic compared to the buffoonery he is many times directed to display. He is fairly successful in dancing like Kishore Kumar in this sequence. You tend to recall ‘Paanch rupaiah baara aana…’ dance from ‘Chalti Ka naam gaadi’ while watching the picturisation of this song.
The starlet in the movie & in this sequence is Shashikala. The sequence is enhanced by Kishore Kumar’s balmy style of rendering of the song. His ’Aaa aa aaa ….sapano ki raani… ‘ will keep ringing in your ears, bringing smile as you recall it.( It brought out the child in me !). As a bonus there is his favorite ‘anokhe bol’ “bumm chikka bumm bumm…” thrown in in this song.
The synopsis of the movie is covered in an earlier post, by Sudhir Ji,(with added inputs, in response to that post, from Arunkumar Ji) ,while presenting another song from the movie.
Suffice it to say here that it is a movie about a middle class family trying to stretch beyond their means for keeping up with the Joneses.(& consequent struggles, disappointments and hilarious situations). It was a great fun film, with a strong message.
The music is by Kalyanji Anand Ji with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and duet.
