This post has been in the making in my head for a long time. It has also been a long time since I have been following this wonderful blog and I have been meaning to give something for it for a while. So, Let me begin with giving at least a couple of laughs perhaps to all of you.
This post is all about a non-film Hindi song and some other things.
I had accidentally come across this song some time back when I was surfing the HMV site searching for songs composed by Pandit Shivram who gave lovely music but sadly got stereotyped as a devotional song composer.
While going through the songs, I discovered that He had given music for a non-film EP of UP folk singer Munni Ketkiwali in 1973. I found the name of the singer quite interesting. Ketki is not a flower one hears of much. As knowledgeable people like you maybe knowing, Ketki is the one flower which is banned in Shiva Temples.
For those unfamiliar, let me recount the mythological story about it. This story is told by the Shiva Purana and Wikipedia sums it like this: “At the beginning of time in Cosmos, Vishnu and Brahmā approached a huge Shiva linga and set out to find its beginning and end. Vishnu advanced to seek the end and Brahma the beginning. Taking the form of a boar, Vishnu began digging downwards into the earth, while Brahma took the form of a swan and began flying upwards. However, neither could find his appointed destination. Vishnu, satisfied, came up to Shiva and bowed down to him as a swarupa of Brahman. Brahmā did not give up so easily. As he was going up, he saw a ketaki flower, dear to Shiva, floating down. Ketaki told Shiva that she had been placed at the top of the Shiva linga. Brahma’s ego forced him to ask the flower to bear false witness about Brahmā’s discovery of Shiva’s beginning. When Brahmā told his tale, Shiva, the all-knowing, was angered by the former’s ego. Shiva thus cursed him that no being in the three worlds will worship him. The flower of Ketaki, for bearing false witness, was cursed to be never used for the worship of Shiva”
The article further says, “The Gods cursed the Ketaki flower, which probably was a boon for mankind :). Ketaki flowers, as mentioned earlier, are very fragrant and are used extensively in perfumes and oils. Flower extracts are used as attars in marriages. The fragrance is used in hair oils, lotions, soaps, tobacco, cosmetics, syrups and sweet dishes. The leaves of Ketaki have medicinal value and are used as condiments as well”.
My guess is that Munni Ketkiwali must have been using this flower in her hair during her performances. The EP/CD cover available also has photos of her with flowers in them. . She appears to have recorded into the early 80s. There is not much personal information available on her. Perhaps, the listeners of the blog will unearth some for us. She seems to have sung mainly UP folk songs during her career. Samdhan, shaadi and other themes are often seen in the available songs.
When I heard the song, I found it very interesting.
The first reason was that Pt Shivram seems to have reused the tune of Pakeeza’s lovely song “Mausam Hai Ashiqaana”. Regional songs getting inspired from film songs is not a new phenomena which this shows. 1973 is the time when the songs of this movie would have been quite popular and cashing on their popularity so that the songs get accepted fast would be in the minds of the producers definitely.
The second reason was the song itself. Before, I talk about the lyrics, let me talk about the title, “Shaadi Ka Hai Zamana”. Now this is certainly a very astute observation. Our society certainly revolves around marriage. When you are small, elders will tell you that you will get married one day. After an age, people will keep asking you about marriage. When you get married, it’ll be kids and later their marriages! This cycle would continue forever. After an age, people EXPECT that you are married. If they visit your house, they will look all around for evidences of SHAADI! Most give quite surprised looks on finding no evidences!!
Coming to the rest of the song. The lyricist of this song is not known to me. Would really love to know who it is from those who have the detail or the EP. I would literally like to know “Lyricist ke charan kahaan hain?!”. The lyricist has fitted his lyrics to the melodious tune and given a very funny twist to them. The first time I heard the song, I was doing what my friends call “ROFL” (Rolling on the floor laughing!). Hats off to the singer who could sing this with a straight face! This is just the kind of song I would expect a bachelor “tongawallah” to sing in frustration with no bride in sight with a dash of sarcasm!
I will not keep you away from the song now.

Thanks Nitin ji for liking it. She certainly has a lovely earthy voice suitable for folk songs and qawwalis as you note. She has sung a number of songs. As I mentioned above, the name of lyricist is not known and S/He has written it with tongue firmly-in-cheek.
I wouldn’t be half surprised if the lyricist were turn out to be Munni Ketkiwali herself as its not uncommon for folk artists to write some of their own songs.

A hilarious song with a folksy touch and naughty too with double entendre, which is not unusual for “samdhan” songs at the time of marriages in some parts of Northern India. Thanks a lot.
