O jee aankhon waalon dekho dekho

This article is written by Avinash Scrapwala, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. Recently, a discussion took place in the ‘Whatsapp-group’ of Atulites where Pradeep ji and Atul ji mentioned about ‘various projects’ that Atulites were pursuing at their individual levels as well as at the group or sub-group level.

Yes everybody is exploring this vast treasure-trove of HFM and trying to contribute their mite. And let us not forget the contributions of those music lovers who have made this exploration possible by uploading songs on YouTube and who continue to do so.

Other than the various ‘series’ that we discuss on the blog, there are other activities like searching for rare songs that are yet to be posted on the blog and which could not be located till now and / or those whose audio/videos are not easily available. Some of this missing songs may have been lost for ever, whereas some of them may someday surface from the oblivion.

Personally I am always at the look out for the songs of Sahir Ludhianvi that are yet to be posted on the blog. Many such songs are from films of 1950’s and 1960’s that have become obscure or the particular remaining songs have become difficult to find. For instance a film viz. ‘Laal Kunwar- 1952’ has three of its songs yet to be covered and these balance three songs as of now are difficult to find.

When I shifted to Nagpur last year I started searching for the audio/video of such films and their songs. Knowing my interest in HFM a few of my colleagues suggested me the names of some ‘music –houses’ where I could try to get such obscure movies.

Few months back I visited one such ‘gramophone house’ in the Dharampeth locality of the town. While the result of this visit did not bring much results, still I was able to find the DVD of the film ‘Bhai Bahan’. As I have not watched this film I immediately grabbed this album to know more about the songs and the film.

Ever since I am in touch with this shop and I keep enquiring about the obscure films of seventies etc. that they may have received.

Next step was to search and locate more such ‘music houses’ where one could get the ‘oldies’ of HFM.

One such place is in the ‘Sadar’ area which is the nearest for me. There I could find some old Rajesh Khanna movies which I have not watched till now, so I was happy to get some of them.

Searching more such ‘music shops’ in the city on ‘Google’, yesterday I visited one more place called ‘rhythm house’, which happens to be in the ‘Gokulpeth’ area of the city. Here also I did not get any movies that I was searching for. So I handed over my wish list of films to them which I had prepared earlier for the obscure movies of 1971 and requested them to inform me on my number whenever any of these albums become available with them.

There are 8-10 more such places that I have yet to explore to see if I could find any of the movies or songs of the ‘golden era ‘of HFM. Or maybe, by that time somebody may upload these movies on YT.

Take the song under discussion for example. I was searching for this song for long. Though this song was already uploaded on YT long back, I could locate it on YT only a few months back.

I got to know about this film ‘Hamsafar-1953’ through the ‘list of film songs’ of Sahir Ludhianvi given in the book ‘Sahir Ludhianvi- The People’s Poet’ by Akshay Manwani.

The first song from the film was posted on 03.12.2013. Since then five more songs from this film have already been posted on the blog. Our beloved Arun ji have discussed about the story of this movie in his post with this song ‘tumhen dulhan mili hamen bhabhi mili’. The story of the film as shared by Arun ji was again reproduced by Atul ji while posting the sixth song ‘haseen chaandni bheegi bheegi hawaayen’ from this film.

As per information available in HFGK Vol III 1951-1960 ( celebrating my second HFGK copy which I have received just a couple of days back) this film had a total of eight songs – three by Geeta Dutt, two by Kishore Kumar, one by Lata Mangeshkar, and one duet by Asha Bhonsle and Talat Mahmood.

However HFGK also mentions that the song ‘aaj sab ko naya ek khazana mila’ – just four lines – seems to be a part of this song ‘tumhen dulhan mili hamen Bhabhi mili’, but both the sources i.e. HFGK as well as the book does not mention the singer’s name for this song. As such today’s song could be the final song from this movie to be posted on the blog. And this could be the Yippee moment too!!

As the audio of this song was not clear to me at many places I was not able to note down the words at many places, and I would request readers with keener ears to help to provide the missing words in the song and correct me wherever I have not been to get it correctly.

Here is this ‘typical’ Sahir Song – taking a dig at the society – sung by Geeta Dutt.
Music of this film was composed by Ali Akbar Khan and lyrics for all the songs were by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Let us now enjoy this song …

@ Atul ji – many thanks for this post.
Kindly correct the year of the film ‘Laal Kunwar ‘ as ‘1952’ please.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
( I had sent the corrected write-up again through mail which seems to be missed out)
Thanks !!

I remember we used to visit a shop near Prabhat Talkies, near Shanwarwada, Pune with several cubicles where one can sit with 2/3 friends and enjoy old songs @ Re1 a song. I wonder whether it is still existing.

BTW who has sung the song Aaj Sabko Naya Ek Khazana Mila in the same movie.
This was the second and last movie in which Ali Akbar Khan gave music. Earlier to this as we know it was Andhiyan-1952

Aabhaar Saheb !!
as mentioned the singer’s name for this song is not specifically given in HFGK, but if it is the part of ‘tumhe dulhan mili …’ then it is Kishore Kumar.
