Today (15 august 2016) is the 69th independence day of India.
With the passage of so much time, the general knowledge of younger generation about Indian freedom struggle and independence is no longer what it used to be in the past. One study mentions that the biggest source to make people aware of our independence day are patriotic songs from movies, followed by school text books.
So, it would seem that patriotic songs covered in this blog on the occasion of Indian independence day and republic day are playing a major role in educating young Indians about India’s independence day.
I mentioned it in the earlier post that talking about independence once it has been achieved in easy. The real challenge was talking about it when the country was still ruled by the British.
This is true for Hindi movie patriotic songs as well. It is easy to make patriotic movies with patriotic songs after the country became independent, but making such movies and still manage to get them released during that time was a major feat in itself. That way, how the patriotic song of “Kismat”(1943) got released has become a stuff of legends by now.
In most such patriotic songs of pre independence era, the message of patriotism was disguised as a message of unity among communities, with message of patriotism discreetly introduced later on.
Here is one bsuch pre independence patriotic song. This song is from “Koshish”(1943). This obscure movie was directed by Rafiq Rizvi for Deen Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Husn bano, Yakoob, Trilok Kapoor, Sunetra, Mirza Musharraf, Kalyani, master Nisaar etc in it.
This song is sung by G M Durrani. Bashir Dehalwi is the music director. Lyricist of this song is not known.
It is interesting to realise that this patriotic song is quite similar to the patriotic song of “Bhai”(1944) which has also been discussed today.
I take this opportunity to wish all a very happy Independence day.
