Hindi talkies got their start in the 1930s. Hindi Film Music, which started with them, took their own time to find their bearings. Their transition phase lasted several years when they underwent many changes (some of them path breaking ones) before HFM finally found their feet and settled down and got consolidated by 1940s.

I regard this transition phase of Hindi film music as the phase where solid foundation was laid that paved the way for the take off stage for the golden period of Hindi film music of the 50s and 60s.

I had already discussed it in one of my earlier articles that new playback singers and new music directors joined the Hindi film industry in the 1940s seeing the potential for a good musical career in it.

The 1940s was also a decade which saw some uncertainties for the film industry in general and Hindi film industry in particular. Two events in the 1940s affected the Hindi film industry badly. In the wake of the World War-II (1939-45), there was restriction on the use of raw film stock for a full length film. Some of the films during this period remained incomplete or struggled to finish the shooting due to the shortage of raw film stock and consequently very high cost of acquiring raw film stock in the black market. The partition of the country in 1947 also badly affected the films that were on the floor in 1947 due to two-way migration of actors and film crews.

During the scouting of rare film songs of the 1940s, I observed that many films that were released in 1947 and 1948 were unknown to me. It appears that these were the films whose shootings had to be completed in a hurry to beat the partition woes and were released without much publicity. Such films were probably released only in a few film distribution territories. This could be one of the reasons why the films did not fare well at the box office.

One of such films which I came to know recently was FARZ (1947). The film was produced under the banner of New Hindustan Pictures and was directed by Niranjan. The star cast included Ragini, Sudhir, Chand Burq, Agha, Fareeda. Leela etc. I have no idea about the film’s story. How obscure this film was can be gauged by the fact that all the nine songs of the film have no information about the singers as well as lyricists. But some of the songs from this film are very melodious.

I am presenting the first songs ‘o nargis pyaare’ to appear in the Blog which is a rare one in the sense that the song was not available on YT until I uploaded the same. The names of the singer as well as lyricist are not available. From the voice, I have guessed that voice is that of Dilshad Begum. One of the commentators on my video upload of the song has confirmed that the voice is indeed that of Dilshad Begum. All the songs of the film were set to music by K S Sagar, a name I heard for the first time.

With this song, the film FARZ (1947) makes its debut in the Blog.
