Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 15
————————————————
Majboor of 1948, a social musical film, was produced by Bombay talkies and directed by Nazir Ajmeri. The star-cast included Munavvar Sultana and Shyam, supported by Indu, Sohan Lal, Jagannath, Dar Kashmiri, Ganju, Shama Gulnar, Ameer Bano, Shivraj, Ram Shashtri, Lakshman Rao, Manto Bai etc. Ghulam Haider set the lilting music to the lyrics by Nazim Panipati.

There were Eight songs in the film and Five of them are already covered in our Musical Blog. This is the Sixth song under discussion. Exept one song by Geera Roy the other Seven were by Lata-ji. Three duets (One with Mukesh and Two with Geeta Roy) and Four songs her solos. After this one, there are Two solos of Lata remaining and Hari Ichchha permitting, I shall present them, in due course.

It is a lilting tune by Master Ghulam Hyder and Lata sings it in a pure young sweet voice. It was this film which made music lovers aware of this new young voice, and has started inquiries about the singer. Enjoy.

Song–Piya Milne Ko Aa (Majboor) (1948) Singers –Lata, Lyrics– Nazim Panipati, MD– Ghulam Haider

Lyrics

piya … milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa
main to jeeti hoon
haan haan main to jeeti hoon tere bharose
piyajee mohe milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa

tujhe apna banaaun
apna jeewan sajaaun
tu jo aaye sunaaun
tu jo aaye sunaaun
jo jo dil ne kaha
ho piya milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa
main to jeeti hoon tere bharose
piyajee mohe milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa

mere honthon pe naa
mere honthon pe naa
kahoon bheetar se haan
kahoon bheetar se haan
aajaa aajaa piyaaji
aajaa aajaa piyaaji
tera hoga bhalaa
ho piya milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa
main to jeeti hoon tere bharose
piyajee mohe milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa

kaise gham ko sahoon
kaise gham ko sahoon
akeli kaise rahoon
akeli kaise rahoon
kaise dil ki kahoon jee
kaise dil ki kahoon jee
mujhe yeh to bata
ho piya milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa
main to jeeti hoon tere bharose
piyajee mohe milne ko aa
ho piya milne ko aa
ha ha ha ha ha..
haaaa

Although Shyam had acted in some movies before this, it was this film that brought him into the limelight as his acting was applauded in the magazine Filmindia in 1948. The story was of Shyam being a Muslim boy but brought up as an abandoned child in a Hindu house and falls in love with a Hindu girl. Later on he discovers his true identity and becomes “Majboor” ( Helpless). The film also had an actor called Sohan in his debut role. The hit song in this film was actually the duet of Mukesh and Lata- “Ab darne ki koi baat nahi” which was a folk dance led by Prem Dhawan ( the lyricist) dancing. In this context , I can recall Prem Dhawan having danced in “Arzoo” 1950 with Cuckoo and the movie is available on youtube.
