Today’s song is from the film Phool-1945.

The film was directed by K.Asif. I think there will not be a single person in India where Hindi is understood and spoken, who has either not seen or has not heard about the film and k.Asif, its maker. Though Asif was only its director, the film was his dream for 15 years and he had spent the best years of his life dreaming, shaping, planning and making this film.

K.Asif was a Dream merchant. He never bothered about people around him. He lived in his own world. His ideas were big, dreams were big and even his loans were big. But most important was his self confidence was King sized and he knew he could do what he dreamt ! Once upon a time a boy working in the Costume section of Atre pictures, sewing dresses on the sewing machines, lived life royally. He thought big – in Lakhs. His first condition to talk to a Financer was ” No Budget”. A millionaire like Shiraz Hakeem poured lakhs only on his words alone !

When Mughal E Azam ( called MEA,henceforth) began initially, there was Chandramohan as Saleem, Madhubala as Anarkali and Sapru as Akbar. After Chandramohan died and Shiraz-his financer migrated to pakistan, Asif waited patiently, but he did not leave his dream. Taking new actors and MD (Naushad instead of Anil Biswas), he did complete his dream project. On 5 th August 1960, MEA was released in 100 theatres all over india at a time. After Chandralekha-1948, it happened only now. Thousands of posters were painted by G.Kamble for this film. Asif bought all colours and all Brushes from the market and for the next few days the Bombay markets were dry !

Meanwhile Asif made a normal film ” Phool”-1945, with 14 Top stars of those times. The giant Drum Dance (नगारा नृत्य ) was the first ever in this film. Chandralekha – 1948 famous for it came second. But it became more famous. In 1951, he made the film Hulchul,but it was not directed by him, only produced by his own company K.Asif productions.His film Love and God remained incomplete with 75 % shooting done. He used to announce big budget films like, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Tajmahal, but none of them even started. Film janwar having Dilip Kumar and Suraiya and Sasta Khoon Mehanga Pani remained incomplete. With all this K.Asif was called ” Movie Mughal” , only due to Mughal E Azam !

In personal life also he lived as he wished. He first married Sitara Devi ( she was living as a consort with his Mama), then one of his cousins in his village. During the making of MEA, he married Nigar Sultana. (Sitara, in one interview had said ” I recommended Nigar’s name for MEA. She came back as my Sautan” ) and lastly he married Akhtar – sister of Dilip Kumar. Dilip never pardoned him for doing this. He died too early or we would have seen more adventures from him.

Asif was born Asif Karim in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, on 14-6-1922 to Parents Dr. Fazal Karim and Bibi Ghulam Fatima- sister of versatile Actor/Director/Producer Nazir Ahmed Khan. Asif was the youngest of his siblings with Sikander Begum being the Eldest and Masood Karim, the first Muslim President of Sindh Club second in line. Asif Karim went to Bombay to his uncle (Mama) Nazir Ahmed Khan and later took the name K. Asif.
Nazir, in order to help him, opened a Tailor’s shop for him in Bombay, but he was not made to become a Tailor. He had big dreams of making a big film as a Director. Meanwhile, he eloped with Sitara Devi, the mistress of Nazir. However, Nazir traced them to Delhi and they came back to Bombay, as husband and wife.

His directorial debut, Phool (1945), did very well at the box-office. In 1944, Asif planned to make a film called Mughal-e-Azam based on the life and times of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great’s court dancer, based on a Urdu novel ‘Anarkali’ written by Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj, with Chandramohan in the male lead and the then upcoming actress Nargis in the female lead. However, in 1946, before the production of the film could begin, the male lead, Chandramohan, died. At that time, Asif temporarily shelved the film until further notice. He produced the film Hulchul and released it in 1951.
At that time, Asif recast Mughal-e-Azam with Dilip Kumar in the male lead and Madhubala in the female lead and began the production of the film in the same year. In 1960, after twelve years in production, Mughal-e-Azam was released and became a huge hit at packed cinema houses across India.

After the release and success of Mughal-e-Azam, Asif planned yet another motion picture called Love and God, his first directorial venture to be made completely in color, and began production. The film was to star Guru Dutt in the male lead and Nimmi in the female lead. However, in 1964, when lead actor Guru Dutt died, shooting came to a halt. Asif recast Sanjeev Kumar in the male lead and resumed production of the film. During the production of the film, K. Asif died on 9 March 1971 at the age of 48 and the film was abandoned. In 1986, Asif’s widow, Akhtar Asif, released the film in an incomplete form.

He directed 2 films- Phool-1945 and Mughal E Azam-1960. His third film ” Love and God” was half made. He produced Hulchul-1951 and Mughal E Azam-1960. He also wrote the screenplay of Mughal E Azam-60. One film “Sasta khoon mehnga pani-86” was never completed.

He won the Best Director, Best film and President’s Silver medal for Mughal E Azam-1960.

K.Asif was a person who understood the value of a talented person and he honoured them always. There is a story about Asif, Dilip kumar and Sajjad Hussain.

This is a story of 1951.

SANGDIL was being made.shooting had stopped before next shot and all the artists were chitchatting.Dilip kumar was humming a tune Sajjad has made for a song of Sangdil.Suddenly Dilip stopped.turned to Sajjad,who was sitting nearby and said,”If you make this tune this way,I tell you,it will become a much better song.” And he hummed some tune.

There was pindrop silence because everyone knew what Sajjad was !
Sajjad got up,went to Dilip Kumar and tapping his chest said acidly,”this is the last time you are saying any such thing to me,remember.Main itnaa bhi nahi giraa hoon abhi,jo tum se salaah loon.'( I have not yet reached such low level as to take improvement suggestions from you )

The atmosphere became tense.Dilip was insulted in front of everybody.This was not digested by him.He went to K.Asif later.Hulchul,produced by Asif had music by Sajjad.Asif was Dilip’s friend and Dilip wanted Asif to throw away Sajjad from Hulchul.Dilip was the Hero of Hulchal also.Asif listened to Dilip coolly and then said,”Sajjad did the right thing.He has not done anything wrong.Why did you poke your nose in his work ? Does he ever tell you how to act ? Acting is your field,Music is his,so never do it again.”
For once Dilip had met his match !

Few years back I had read a book” Rahen na rahen hum” by Shantaram Mankikar.I had made some notes from this book. One of the notes is about Jamal Sen and K.Asif.

When K. Asif announced Sasta Khoon Mehnga Paani, which had a Rajasthani backdrop, he-asked Jamal Sen to be an advisor to bring authenticity to Naushad’s compositions. But luck once again played truant with him and the project never saw the light of the day.
Jamal Sen knew Producer Director K.Asif for many years.Once they met somewhere and Asif took Jamal to the sets of Mughal-E Azam. There a dance sequence was to be shot and Gopikrishna was rehearsing the steps. Jamal saw everything but did not comment anything. As Asif knew him well, he suspected something and asked Jamal what was wrong. Jamal told him that the sets are absolutely appropriate but the dance steps and the ‘Bol’ were not commensurate with the period when Akbar was reigning. Asif asked him then and there to make new Dance steps,prepare the ‘Bol’ and make music for that sequence.
Jamal Sen did that and Asif was more than happy.
However that piece of Dance and music was not used by Naushad in the film.

Then there is the story how K.Asif got Bade Ghulam Ali khan to sing a song for his dream film Mughal E Azam-1960.

For the song ‘Prem Jogan Ban Ke’, director K Asif expressed the desire of having legendary classical singer Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan as the playback singer. Music director Naushad told K Asif that the singer doesn’t sing for films. Yet, K Asif took a chance.

He and Naushad met Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan at the latter’s residence. K Asif told him that he’ll pay him whatever that he asks for. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan quoted Rs. 25,000, which was an insane amount of money in those days to be paid to a singer. As per some reports, singers were barely paid around Rs. 500-1000 per song at that time. Yet, K Asif, without hesitation, agreed and even paid him an advance of Rs. 10,000 on the spot.

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan then turned up on the day of recording at Mehboob Studio. The singer threw a fit when he saw that there was no gadda, chaddar or takiyas laid out for him. Immediately, K Asif gave the studio the setup of a baithak.Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan then began the recording. K Asif didn’t seem impressed with his rendition. He told the singer that his rendition was a bit too heavy and doesn’t go with the song’s soft, romantic mood. An angry Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan stormed out of the studio and said that he’ll return only when he had seen the scene on which the song will be played.

K Asif had not shot the said scene till then. With no other option, he quickly filmed the sequence of his lead actors Dilip Kumar as Salim and Madhubala as Anarkali romancing each other in the palace garden. The filmmaker then quickly edited, cut a print and screened it for the singer. According to Naushad, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saw the whole scene in silence. At the end, he nodded in approval and remarked that both Salim and Anarkali look ‘khoobsurat’! He then recorded the song as per the scene’s mood and K Asif’s guidance. He gave three more takes too. Each time he sang, the scene was played in front of him. When Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was leaving, he asked K Asif to use whichever version he liked and to make sure it sounded good!

Today’s song from Phool-1945 is a chorus song. It is a rare song given to me by friend Abhay jain-USA and uploaded by our own Sadanand Ji-India ! Thanks to both.

Today’s song is from the film Kaneez-49. The film had 12 songs. 11 songs are already posted. This is the last song of the film to be discussed here.

HFGK mentions mukhada of this song as ” Dil bechane nikla hai”, sung by Durrani and Rajkumari. There are at least two uploads of this song on YouTube. One is from our Sadanand Kamath ji and the other is from Saregama company. In both uploads, the first line is missing and the song starts as ” dil le lo, dil le lo”. However in the Saregama upload,, in the end , the words are ” dil bechane nikla hai, dil ka saudagar, dil le lo dil le lo”, confirming that this is the same song as mentioned in HFGK. As such, Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji has uploaded this song on Surjit ji’s site, from his record. So, there is no doubt.

Film Kaneez-49 has an interesting history of its making. As per an advertisement in a film magazine, this was first being made with a title of ” Tehzeeb”, by producers S A Shah and Krishan Kumar, for their Carvaan Pictures. It was to be directed by K D Mehra. Shatir Ghaznavi wrote the dialogues and lyrics. Due to the partition announcement. Krishan Kumar shifted to Bombay, with the incomplete film. After the partition, with a new set of actors, the film was redone and titled ‘ Kaneez ‘. Remaining dialogues were written by Hasrat Lucknowi. This time Krishan Kumar himself directed the film and released it in India and Pakistan. The film was a Hit.

Besides director Krishan Kumar, there were 2 MDs- Ghulam Haider and Hansraj Behl. Four lyricists wrote the songs. The cast of the film was Shyam, Munawwar Sultana, Urmila,Kuldip Kaur, Cuckoo, Ramayan Tiwari, Ramesh Sinha and others.

The shooting of Kaneez was in full swing in 1948 at Shrikant Studios. On another floor of that studio, a stunt film of Master Bhagwan was being shot. Isak Mujawar, Film Historian, has described an incident of that time, in his book on Master Bhagwan-” Ek Albela “. Actor Shyam was very friendly with Master Bhagwan. In those days, Shyam had grown very close to M.Sultana. One day, during a shooting break, shyam and Munawwar met Bhagwan and said,” I am very keen to work in your film”. Bhagwan smiled and said,” Before that, you must see the shooting of my films. After that, let us see what will be your decision.”

Accordingly, the next day Shyam and M.Sultana went to see the shooting of the film ” Laalach “,made by Bhagwan. The scene was Baburao pehelwan fighting with 5-6 goons, on the balcony of a house. The scene started and after some time Baburao got a hit from one villain and he slipped, falling on the ground floor where a glass table was kept. On impact, the glass table broke. There was a loud noise, commotion and shouting. Shyam and Munawwar shouted in fear and ran out of the studio. Such accidents were common to Baburao.After treating his bruises and cuts, Baburao started the fighting scene again. Shyam and M.Sultana came back to inquire about the actor’s fate. They were shocked to see him doing the fighting scene. On asking, Bhagwan told Shyam, ” In my films, such accidents are a common thing. And yes, you said you want to work in my films, isn’t it ?” Shyam said,” No , No, who wants to die doing stunts ?”. Bhagwan told him,” Be happy in doing Love scenes and singing songs in your films”. By a turn of fate, with 2 year’s time Shyam died doing a stunt for film ‘Shabistan’-51 !

In the cast, you will see Cuckoo. In those days, Cuckoo was an attraction in any film. Both Azurie and Cuckoo were in great demand. Cuckoo Moray, (4th February 1928 – 30th September 1981) was an Anglo-Indian dancer and actress. Cuckoo was the queen of film dancing in Hindi cinema of the 1940s and 1950s. Though unfamiliar in name, she was known as the “rubber girl” of Hindi cinema and her talent made cabaret dancing a must in the Bollywood films during the 1940s and 1950s. She could acrobatically bend her body at great length.

Cuckoo started appearing in films from the mid forties. She started as a child artiste. Her first film was Anjaan-41. She was seen as a background dancer in film Meghdoot-45. Cuckoo made her screen debut in the film Arab Ka Sitara in 1946. Soon after, in Sona Chandi-46, directors and greater audiences noticed her dancing abilities for the first time. One of her dances in film Parwana-47 with suggestive lyrics to the song was considered vulgar enough to get banned from the film. Then, the turning point in Cuckoo’s career was in Mehboob Khan’s films. Her dance number in his film Anokhi Ada (1948) established her as the lead dancer of the era and in Andaz(1949), a romantic drama starring Nargis, Dilip Kumar, and Raj Kapoor, gave the dancer an opportunity to display her acting skills. In Mehboob Khan’s 1952 technicolor film Aan, which was her first colour film, she had a brief cameo in a dance sequence. She only appeared in 2 colour films in her career- Aan & Mayurpankh. She would charge Rs 6,000 for a dance number, an enviable fee in the 50s.

Usually she is credited with bringing into films 2 Anglo Indian brothers Tony (Krishna kumar) and Robert (Surya kumar). However, Azuri later claimed that it was she who brought them into films from an orphanage and trained them. Dancers first, both became Choreographers of repute later.

Cuckoo remained the best dancer in Hindi films until dancers such as Helen and Vyjayanthimala came into the industry. Cuckoo was a family friend of the Anglo-Burmese dancer and actress Helen. She was also known for helping unknown actors get their break in Bollywood, such as Pran in Ziddi. Cuckoo had introduced a 13-year-old Helen into films as a chorus dancer in films such as Shabistan and Awaara (both 1951). Cuckoo and Helen most notably appeared in song and dance sequences together, such as in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi(1958) and Yahudi (1958). Her last film appearance was in Mujhe Jeene Do in 1963 after which, she had disappeared from the film industry. She was a Heroine in the film Sona Chandi-46, under the name Kishori, but due to her faulty Hindi and pronunciation, she could not continue as a Heroine. She appeared in 155 films and 67 songs were shot on her.

Cuckoo, the legendary cabaret queen of Bollywood was one of those film stars who lived ostentatiously, spent extravagantly and died broke and penniless. Her three cars (one for her use, one for taking her dogs for a drive, and the other often used to summon protege Helen to play with her sister), her flats and whatever jewellery she had, were all taken away because the dancer had evaded income tax. She would charge Rs 6,000 for a dance number, an enviable fee in the ’50s. Cuckoo died of cancer at the age of 52; during her last days she could barely afford to buy painkillers. “She never thought of security, of tomorrow,” Helen recalls. “But what a tremendous lady she was! There wasn’t even a tear in her eye, even when the roles stopped, when the money disappeared. Instead she’d joke about her plight. Some actors did help but it was too late, much too late.”

Cuckoo died on 30 September 1981 due to cancer at the age of 53. She was forgotten and unattended by the film industry at the time of her death. (adapted from wiki, MuVyz, book ‘Edwina’ and cineplot).

Today’s song (despite the missing first line) is a good duet by G M Durrani and Rajkumari. Sadanand ji opines that the female singer is Shamshad Begum. With this song film Kaneez will be ‘ Yippeed ‘, with all its songs covered.

Today (15 august 2019) is the 73rd independence day of India. It is already evening and no post has appeared in the blog so far. But I will try and post topical songs today like we have always done in the blog on the past such occasions.

The first song of the day is from “Shaheed”(1948). This movie was directed by Ramesh Saigal for Filmistan. The movie had Chandramohan, Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Ram singh, S L Puri, V. H. Desai, Shashi Kapoor, Raj adeeb, Prabhu Dayal etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. Six songs have been covered in the past. One of these six songs was covered exactly nine years ago, and that was the most well known song from the movie, a patriotic song, viz Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujawaan shaheed ho .

The seventh and final song is a stage song performed by kids and watched by elders. The stage performance is a patriotic song performance.

HFGK mentions Lalita Deulkar and chorus as the singer. I am not sure that I can detect Lalita Deulkar’s voice in the song, but I will take the words of HFGK for it. To me the song sounds like being sung by a few child voices (unattributed) and chorus. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the singing voices.

“Shaheed”(1948) was directed by Ramesh Saigal for Filmistan. The movie had Chandramohan, Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Ram Singh, S L Puri, V. H. Desai, Shashi Kapoor, Raj adeeb, Prabhu Dayal etc in it.

This song, now regarded as a landmark movie, had seven songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth song from “Shaheed”(1948) to aappear in the blog. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt (then Geeta Roy) who was then very young. Her fresh and raw voice sounds so refreshing even today !

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

The song is lip synced by Kamini Kaushal. Dilip Kumar is also briefly visible in the picturisation. Another lady (or is it Kamini Kaushal herself ?) is also seen. I request our kowledgeable readers to help identify her.

There will hardly be a person who has not seen film Mughal E Azam or heard about it. The film was famous and the man who made it – K.Asif – became known to all because of this film. However, K.Asif was not a prolific film maker. In reality, K.Asif (14-6-1922 to 9-3-1971) directed only two and half films. His first film was Phool-45, second was Mughal E Azam-60 and his last attempt was the unfinished film Love and God ( aka Kaiz and Laila)-1986. This film was released as an unfinished film by his kins on 27-5-1986, 15 years after K.Asif died. Asif had produced a film, ‘Hulchul-51’, but he did not direct it.

K.Asif first conceived the film Mughal E Azam in 1944, after reading a play on Emperor Akbar (1556-1605). The film changed its story, MD, cast etc, several times, from what was planned originally and subsequently, but the director remained the same – K.Asif. However, he made another film, Phool in 1945, in normal period of making a film. Asif was an extraordinary person. He was fond of dreaming big and doing it big. Accordingly, even in his first film Phool-45, he took 14 famous stars of those times in his film. By far, it must have been a true Multi-Star film in those days.

The cast of the film almost ran like a list of leading stars. It consisted of Veena, Sitara, Suraiya, Prithwiraj kapoor, Yaqub, Wasti, Mazhar, Ashraf khan, Durga Khote, Majid, M.Ismail, Dikshit, Agha, Jillobai etc etc. The film was produced by K.Abdulla, screenplay was by Kamaal Amrohi and the music by Ghulam Haider. The film was made under the banner of Famous Films, Bombay.

Today’s song is from film Phool-45.

During the decade of the 40s, the struggle for India’s Independence had also heated up. As England was engaged in the second world war, it was thought to be the right time to increase pressure on them, so that after the war, India could get its Independence. By those times, it was very well known that there would be a Partition and a Muslim nation ” Pakistan” would be created by dividing India.

With this background suddenly, making films on Muslim life and culture gained momentum. From 1940 to 1947 as many as 19 films on Muslim culture were made. They were, Paak daman-40, Qaidi-40, Muslim ka laal-41, Masoom-41, Bulbul E Baghdad-41, Fashio-43, Najma-43, Salma-43, Bade Nawab Sahab-44, Bhaijaan-44, Ismat-44, Phool-45, Humayun-13, Rehana-46, Dil-46, Arab ka Sitara-46, Alibaba-46, Shalimar-46, and Mulaqat-47.

Actress Veena was the Heroine in film Phool-45. How she came into films is an interesting story. Veena was born as Tajwar Sultana, on 4-7-1926, at Quetta in Baluchistan (now in Pakistan). Her father was in Railways, so he was transferred many times and her education was done at various places, including Delhi. After her Matriculation, she was sent to a women’s college, with Hostel, in Amritsar. In those days, her brother Shehzada Iftekhar was an assistant Cameraman at Northern India Studios, Lahore. This studio advertised for a Heroine, for their new Punjabi film ” Gawandi “.

A Bangali lecturer from Veena’s college had applied. A few days later, a team (including her brother) from Lahore came to interview her, but she was rejected as she did not know Punjabi well enough. Veena was very keen to apply, but her brother warned her about the family resistance. She prodded him to give her photo to the visitors. Seeing her photo, she was called to Lahore for screen Test. All this was without letting the family know.

One Saturday, Veena left for Lahore. Next day she gave the screen test, mouthing dialogues written by Wali Saheb. She was selected and offered the role. One of the producers- Sheth Kishorilal, suggested to change her name for the screen as Veena ( it was his daughter’s name) and she became Veena.

She completed film ‘Gawandi-42’, opposite Hero Shyam, in just one month and in the next one month, she did another film ‘ Ravi Paar-42’, opposite Hero S.D.Narang. All this was without family’s knowledge, but she was aware of the impending storm. She returned to college. News about her film work had already reached the college. She was thrown out of the college and the hostel for this.

When she returned home, as expected there was a great scene. She was scolded and locked in a room. Her family wanted to get her married, which she vehemently opposed. Her family went to the producers and demanded that the films be destroyed. Of course, this was was not accepted. Meanwhile, Veena had received film offers from Mazhar Khan, Mehboob, Bombay Talkies and Rajneet. She left her house with brother and reached Bombay. Mazhar khan paid her Rs.2000 per month with a Bungalow and a Car. She did her first Hindi film ” Yaad “-42. Then came Najma-43 from Mehboob, Rajputani-44 from Ranjit etc etc. She earned One lakh rupees per film.

Veena did about 100 Hindi films in her career, till she retired in 1983. Even after her husband, Al Nasir’s death in 1957, she continued to stay and work in India with her children. Veena died on 14-11-2004. ( adapted from her interview in Shama, November 1981. Thanks to book ” ye un dinon ki baat hai” by Yasir Abbasi).

Film Phool-45 was written by Kamaal Amrohi. It was a story of lasting love, bravery and faithfulness. The film was released in Roxy Theatre in Bombay and it became a hit. There were good reviews in media and even Baburao Patel of Film India appreciated the director K.Asif’s work. However, the music of Ghulam Haider was criticised. None of the songs became very popular.

The story of film Phool-45 revolved around two families. Safdar and Akhtar are brothers. Religious minded Safdar has a beautiful daughter Shama (Veena). Together they want to build a Mosque. Lazy brother Akhtar and his arrogant wife have two sons-Zahid and Sharif. They want that Shama should marry useless Zahid. Shama is in love with Dr. Saleem who is Akhtar’s nephew. Saleem (Prithwiraj) has a Hindu sister- Rekha (Suraiya), who was an orphan.

On the day of marriage of Saleem and Shama, Dr. Saleem has to leave on duty abroad. Shama’s father Safdar dies with this shock. Shama and Rekha become very close friends. Dr. Saleem is lured by dancer Laila (Sitara), but he declines. Laila uses a medicine, by which Saleem loses his memory.Now he joins Laila’s troupe and they visit many cities.

Once they arrive in a city, where Shama lives. On information from people about Saleem, she goes to meet him, but he does not recognise her due to loss of memory. Next day Saleem falls from the stage accidentally and his memory comes back. He leaves Laila and comes back to Shama. Saleem and Shama get united. The evil son Zahid is killed by lightening. Let us now listen to the chorus song. Lyricist’s name is not given in HFGK. Since the story, screenplay and dialogues are by Kamaal Amrohi, like the uploader-Sadanand Kamath ji, I too feel he must be the Lyricist also.

“Kaneez”(1949) was directed by Krishn Kumar for Caravan Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Shyam, Munawwar Sultana, Urmila, Kuldeep, Cuckoo, Tiwari, Ramesh Sinha, Shyama etc in it.

There were twelve songs in the movie. Ten of these songs have been discussed in the past.

According to HFGK, the movie had two music directors viz Ghulam Haider and Hansraj Bahl. Hansraj Bahl is credited with two songs and Ghulam Haider with seven songs. Credits are not given for the remaining three songs.

Here is the eleventh song from “Kaneez”(1949) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Lyricist as well as the music director of this song is not known. Uploader of this song (our own Mr Sadanand Kamath) feels that Ghulam Haider is the composer of this song and that thiis song may have been picturised on Cuckoo. I find myself agreeing with these guesses. So I have considered Ghulam Haider as the music director of this song.
