Hullo to all in Atuldom
We are nearing the end of 2016. There is a trend everywhere; people take stock of ‘the year that was’. I thought why not do the same from my perspective.
The year began with a Gangout in Bangalore when Arunji our in-house encyclopedia visited South India. There was another Gangout in Bangalore when Avinashji visited Bangalore. The difference between the two trips was Arunji planned his visit around his personal social commitments (and was kindhearted enough to give us his whole day) where as Avinashji planned his visit exclusively to meet fellow Atulwaales in Bangalore. (Prior to that he visited Chennai combining an official trip with the pleasure of meeting the Chennai-Atulite Pradeepji). But all in all two great dates in 2016. Of course there was also the Mumbai Gangout but unfortunately I was unable to attend, and going by the reports of the same even they sound as having been a BLAST!! So there was a lot of personal interaction among atulites in 2016. Looking forward to 2017, nothing is planned as yet though.
On my personal front i had a lot of travel in 2016. I went holidaying to Pondicherry, Ooty etc. Whenever I go on a holiday I try to visit places that I have seen on the wide movie screen and compare what I see with how it looked in the movie. I have discovered that many places have stood the test of time especially in Europe but I am saddened that we Indians are not able to look after our tourist attractions. I also traveled to a few religious destinations, Tirupati being one of them (in beginning of November), Kollur in Dakshin Karnataka in December, and to the temples of Kerala once or twice in 2016 etc.
This year, as in other years, the blog saw the centuries of some artists and some centuries turned into 4-figures. We have 100+ songs of about 79 artists on the blog. We had the blogs 12000th post on 20th April, today the song counter is nearing 12800. That means eight centuries (nearly) in eight months.
The most notable event in my opinion was the number of Kishore Kumar songs touching the four-figure mark. I know that many Atulites are cricket fans too. I am also sure that many would remember Sunil Gavaskar advising (in his avatar as commentator) that a batsman who reaches his century should attain the figure with either a four or atleast run 2-runs to reach the mark. He says that this would ensure that the figure attained was a 100 and negate any miss-entries of byes, leg byes etc which might get credited to the “Extras”. I am sure no one has got the connection of what I am trying to say here. Well we reached Kishore Kumar’s 1000th song and I was thinking that we should have one more just in case there was any mistakes in counting and very next day our dear Arunji gave us “sardi ka bukhaar burra”. I ended last year with a Kishore Kumar song from the Amitabh starrer “Nastik” (I think Atulji posted it just before the stroke of 12 on 31st December 2015; I saw it on the blog on 1st Jan 2016). Here I am again with a Kishore Kumar song. This time Kishore Kumar sings for today’s birthday boy Rajesh Khanna.
“Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar” came in 1984. That was the time when Amitabh Bachchan tried his luck at politics and contested for elections and Rajesh Khanna was a campaigner for the Indian National Congress. Rajesh Khanna did contest for elections in 1991 and 1992 and was a Lok Sabha Member till 1997.
The story of “Aaj Ka MLA Ram Avtar” showed that Ram Avtar, a barber by profession, contests the state assembly elections and gets the post of Chief Minister. Further it shows how the politicians instigate one group (workers if I remember right) against their bosses for a raise and bosses against the workers. The ministers also go on to fill their on coffers in the bargain. This movie had music by Bappi Lahiri and Indeevar was the lyricist. Today’s song has been playing in my mind ever since I made the trip to Tirupati. The song shows Ram Avtar going to Tirupati (I didn’t go dressed i Yellow as is shown in the song 😉
Thinking of Rajesh Khanna the super star on his birthday

@ Peevesie’s Mom ji – nice post !! thanks for the post and the song.
For me ‘Aaj Ka MLA Ramavtaar’ was a good movie and I think this is the best ‘satire’ made on our ‘political system’ till date. Though the movie was not successful it is a very nice movie to watch.
I liked Rajesh Khanna’s role in this movie very much and his performance was excellent.
In fact I had watched this movie many times 🙂
