Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 16
—————————————————-
Majboor, a 1948 romantic social film was produced by Bombay Talkies and directed by Nazir Ajmeri. The star-cast included Munavvar Sultana, Shyam, Indu, Sohanlal, Jagannath, Dar Kashmiri, Manju, Shama Gulnar, Ameer Bano, Shivraj, Ram Shastri, Lakshmanrao, Mantobai etc.
The film had eight songs written by Nazim Panipati and music set by the great Ghulam Haider. According to HFGK there were three solos by Lata, a duet with Mukesh, two duets with Geeta Roy and a solo by Geeta Roy. One song ‘Dekho jee mori baiyaan pakad ke’ was wrongly labelled as Lata and chorus, was in fact a duet by Hamida Bano and Durrani. So as far as my series of Lata, all her songs for this film, will be covered by this presentation.
In fact these Lata’s songs, when heard on Radio during those days made people wonder about this sweet voice and had made enquiries to Radio Stations, as the names of singers, as a practice, were not very much mentioned on 78 RPM records. So enjoy the song, a very melodious and full of heart-felt pathos, which made Lata’s voice popular by her name.
Song-Ab koi jee ke kya kare (Majboor)(1948) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Nazim Panipati, MD-Ghulam Haider
Lyrics
daaman hai chaak chaak mera
ab jiyen to kya
jeene ka kuchh maza hi nahin een een
ab jiyen to kya aa
ab koi jee ke kya kare ae ae
jab koi aasra nahin
ab koi jee ke kya kare ae ae
jab koi aasra nahin
dil mein tumhaari yaad hai
yaad hai ae
aur koi doosra nahin
ab koi jee ke kya kare ae ae
jab koi aasra nahin
aankhen milaa ke ae ae
pyaar se ae ae
aankhen chura ke chal diye ae
chal diye
aankhen chura ke chal diye
chal diye
us par sitam hai
aag si ee ee
dil mein laga ke chal diye
chal diye
dil mein laga ke chal diye
chal diye
ab koi tumse kya kahe ae ae
jab tumne keh diya nahin
pehle to aap thhe mere
aur ab kisi ke ho gaye
meri gali ee ee
ko chhod ke
kiski gali mein kho gaye
kho gaye
kiski gali mein kho gaye
kho gaye
mujhko teri talaash hai ae ae
tera to kuchh pata nahin
ab koi jee ke kya kare ae ae
jab koi aasra nahin een een

All the songs of Lata in this movie were picturised on Munawar Sultana. The voice didn’t suit as Munawar Sultana had a heavy voice and singers like Surinder Kaur and Shamshad were ideal for her. This was even commented by Lata herself

Thanks for this information about the movie. I was also wondering about the actress who lip synced in Lata’s voice in this movie.
