———————————————————————————————————————

Today 6th January 2017 is the thirtieth death anniversary of Composer Jaidev.

We pay our tributes to him, and on this occasion we enjoy a ‘story-telling’ song from the 1976 movie “Laila Majnu”. Jaidev shared the music credits for this movie with Composer Madan Mohan who left us when the movie must be on its completion work since it was released in the next year 1976.

This movie had a total of nine songs in it including one two-part song. Out of these nine songs Madan Mohan composed six songs and three songs, including the one two-part song, were composed by Jaidev.

Eight songs of this movie have already been posted on the blog which consists two of Jaidev’s compositions and six of Madan Mohan compositions. That means we have only have one song left which is composed by Jaidev.

On our blog so far we have four movies contaiing ‘Laila Majnu’ in their titles viz. ‘Daastaan e Laila Majnu-1974’, ‘Laila Majnu-1945’, ‘Laila Majnu-1953’ and ‘Laila Majnu-1976’. However, so far, none of these movies have so far been YIPPEED on the blog.

Today “Laila Majnu-1976” enters the ‘YIPPEEEE’ club with this song ensuring that all the songs of this movie have now been covered in the blog.

“Laila Majnu-1976” (or “Lailaa Majnun” as spelled in HFGK Vol.V) was a “Delux International, Bombay” presentation and it was presented by Shankar B.C. It was produced by Seeroo Daryanani and Ram B.C. and it was directed by H.S.Rawail who also wrote the screenplay of this movie.

This movie was dedicated to Madan Mohan.

It had Rish Kapoor, Ranjeeta (Debutant), Danny Dengzongpa, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Paintal, Ranjeet, Iftikhar, Sundar, Raza Murad, Achala Sachdev, Preeti Ganguly, Kamal Kapoor, Mumtaz Begam, Farooq Shorty, Jagdish Raj, Kamaldeep, Tom Alter, Dilip Dutt, Ram Avtar, Dhanna, Sharad Saxena, Master Tito and others. Jayshree T, Meena T, Sudhir and Murad make a guest appearance in this movie.

Abrar Alvi does a ‘special appearance’ in this movie.

Story adaptation (along with costume designing) was done by Mrs. Anjana Rawail. Dialogues were written by Abrar Alvi. The editing for this movie was done by Shyam.

This movie had nine songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi and all of them are ‘poetic gems’.

As mentioned above music for this movie was composed by Madan Mohan and Jaidev.

Amber Kumar, Anuradha, Aziz Nazaan, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Preeti Sagar, Rajkumar Rizvi and Shankar-Shambhu gave their voices to the beautiful songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.11.1976.

***

I remember, in my growing up years (I was about eight years old at that time) the songs of this movie were frequently heard on the ‘loud speakers’ in every festival and orchestras viz. ‘husn haazir hai mohabbat ki sazaa paane ko’. It was also the ‘Binaca Geetmala’ topper of 1977.

Two more songs from this movie made it to Binaca geetmala finals. ‘tere dar pe aaya hoon’ finished at at number 9 and ‘iss reshmi paazeb ki jhankaar ke sadqe’ finished at number 13 in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala list’ of 1977.

None of its songs make an entry in the annual list of 1976 which proves that they took some time or may be couple of months to ‘build its magic’ over the people after the release of this movie and may be the ‘word of mouth’ have played a bigger role in the popularity of the movie and its songs. (Knowledgeable readers can throw more light on this).

I didn’t get to watch this movie then and naturally given my age at that time, I did not like the songs at that time(I think). I do remember that only one song that was frequently heard on loud speakers and orchestra was ‘koi patthar se naa maare mere deewaane ko’ and it did irritate me a lot at that then.

Many Years later when I was a grown up adult I had bought the cassette (HMV) of songs of this movie and that was around 1989-1990. (Since I am away from my base-station, I could not give the exact date of buying of this album which I mentioned on the cover with my sign on that, as I was maintaining it in those years).

I liked all the songs of this movie and they grew upon me as years passed and I read more about Sahir’s poetry and his lyrics.

Each one of the songs of this movie is a ‘gem’ having classic poetry in them. I liked all of these songs very much, and hence I cannot resist the temptation to list below how this movie’s songs appeared, chronologically, on our blog and the name of the contributors. Here is the list :

As mentioned above, today’s song is the final song of this movie to appear on the blog and with this song ‘Laila Majnu-1976’ has all its songs covered on the blog and it joins the ‘list of movies-all songs covered’ on the blog.

(I hope I have mentioned the lyrics correctly as possible and have left a ?mark wherever I have a doubt. I request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this.
Also, since I am delayed in sending this post to Atul ji, and want it to be posted today only, I shall add the ‘meaning of key Urdu words’ and ‘lyrics in devnagri script’ to this post later).

Laila Majnu u u u
do badan ik jaan thhe
ik jaan thhe
ik jaan thhe
Jazbaa e ishq o wafaa ki shaan thhe
Jazbaa e ishq o wafaa ki shaan thhe
Jazbaa e ishq o wafaa ki shaan thhe
Shaan thhe
Laila Majnu do badan ik jaan thhe
ik jaan thhe

(Not in video/and movie)

Ye zameen par aasmaani raaz thhe
Raaz thhe
Gaib ki goonji huyi aawaaz thhe
Aawaaz thhe
Har jawaan dil mein dhadakte hain
dhadakte hai ye naam
Shammaa ban ban kar bhadakte hai
bhadakte ye naam
Saath in donon ka marne par bhi hai
Saikdon sadiyaan guzarne par bhi hai
Saikdon sadiyaan guzarne par
Guzarne par bhi hai
Laila Majnu do badan ik jaan thhe ae
Ik jaan thhe

————————————————————

Do kabeele aamri aur sarbari
Jinmein thi pushton puraani dushmani
Un kabeelon ke the ye noor e najar
Jinke dil mein kar liyaa ulfat ne ghar

Aur ye ulfat ibaadat ban gayee
Huqm e raq
Mansha e kudrat ban gayee

Maktab unka kaabaa ye ulfat banaa
Ulfat banaa
Jalwaa e rukh deed ki jannat banaa

Jalwa e rukh deed ki jannat banaa
Jannat banaa
Laila Majnu do badan ik jaan thhe ae
ik jaan thhe

Ek din maktab mein mulla ne kahaa
Sab likho takhti pe naam Allah ka
Sabne likhaa sirf Majnu hi magar
Laila Laila likh rahaa thha bekhabar

Laila Laila likh rahaa thha bekhabar

Taish is par aa gaya ustaad ko
Kaise sehta kufr aur ilhaad ko
Usne Majnu ko sazaa e sakht di
Har sazaa ki zarb Laila par padi
Har sazaa ki zarb Laila par padi

Maulawi kaanpa ye manzar dekh kar
Aab deedaa ho gaya is bhool par
Pyaar masoomon ka ruswaa ho gayaa
Jaa bajaa donon ka charcha ho gaya

Jab suna Laila ke waalid ne ye haal
Sharm aayi aur huaa behad malaal
Usne Laila se kahaa maktab na jaaye
Ghar ki chaukhat se qadam baahar na laaye

Ek din bekaar pahre ho gaye
Laila aur Majnu achaanak kho gaye

Donon sardaaron pe wahshat chhaa gayee
Myaan se talwaar baahar aa gayee

Par jo guzre ek nakhlistaan se
Dekhte hi reh gaye hairaan se
Hairaan se

Laila Majnu khel mein masroof thhe
Aa aa ha ha
Aa aa
Hmm hmm
Hmm hmm
Hmm hmm

Laila Majnu khel mein masroof thhe
Waalid e manju ne dekha gaur se

Aur kahaa Laila ke waalid se huzoor

Khelne deejiye inhen keejiye na door
Khelne deejiye inhe keejiye na door

Taish mein Laila ke waalid ne kahaa
Kal yahi khel ek dagaa(?) ban jayegaa
Bad-duaa hogaa gharaanon ke liye
Sharm hogaa khaandaanon ke liye
Ye kahaa aur khench kar Laila ka haath
Le gayaa is tarah usko apne saath
Le gayaa is tarah usko apne saath

Phir na koi dekhne aaya unhen
Dekhne aaya unhe
Jaane kis basti ne thehraaya unhe
Jaane kis basti ne thehraaya unhe
Jaane kis basti ne thehraaya unhe

Thanks Avinashji to remember my favorite MD on his Punyateethi.
Also a big ‘YEEEEPPEEEEE’ for this great musical film.
You know very well that I am presenting a series called ‘Genius of Jaidev and I am trying to present songs NOT YET COVERED on this musical Blog. I had started from Jaidev’s first movie ‘Joru Ka Bhai (1955) and am inching at snail speed and have covered most of the songs up to ‘Ek Hans Ka Joda’ (1975). (58th presentation in the series). I would have taken years to come to the film ‘Lailaa Majnun’ as I am a slow researcher and I have not been able to get many songs in my journey up till now.
Thanks again and ‘Aum Shanti Shanti’ for Jaidev-ji.
