“Aarambh”(1976) was directed by Gyan Kumar for Prerna Pictures, Calcutta. This obscure social movie had Rakesh Pandey, Rama Vij, Kishore Kapoor, Bipin Gupta, Rohin Kumar, Kalyan Chatterji, Chandrakala, M L Daga, Trilochan Jha, Nanu, B P Tiwari, Madan Sudan, Ravi Yagnik, Surendra Gupta, Tej Bahadur, C R Tenani, Naval Joshi, Akhtar, Gayatri Mukherji, Laxmi Chaaya etc with Master Piyush (new discovery) and Pallavi Mehta (guest role) etc in it.

This movie had four songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Aarambh”(1976) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Aarti Mukherji. Shri Shalabh is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anand Shankar.

Only the audio of the song is available. Assuing that Rama Vij was the leading lady of the movie, my guess is that this song was picturised on her. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Tumhaare bina o sajna adhoori hoon main (Aarambh)(1976) Singer-Aarti Mukherji, Lyrics-Shri Shalabh, MD-Anand Shankar

Lyrics

tumhaare bina o sajna
adhoori hoon main
tumhaare bina o sajna
adhoori hoon main
jiski manzil ho tum
aisi doori hoon main
tumhaare bina o sajna
adhoori hoon main

mere man ke gagan ke tumhi chandrma
meri har raat tumse bani poornima
tum ho baadal
tumhaari mayuri hoon main
jiski manzil ho tum
aisi doori hoon main
tumhaare bina o sajna
adhoori hoon main

tum mujhe yoon miley
gandh se jyun pawan
dhany hai paa tumhen mera tan mera man
preet ki kalpna se poori hoon main
jiski manzil ho tum
aisi doori hoon main
tumhaare bina o sajna
adhoori hoon main

Hullo all in Atuldom

Saw a good clean movie with a straight forward story today. The story was almost as if inspired from the life of Valmiki.

Let me begin at the beginning. As I was writing my previous post on Hrishikesh Mukherjee I went through the filmography and saw that I had missed out seeing Sabse Bada Sukh; Arjun Pandit; Naukri; Achcha Bura; Naamumkin (of the 70s and 80s) and a few from the earlier decades. So, I decided since I have the time I shall see one today. But before that I was looking for songs where Sachin Dev Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri had collaborated and was also hoping that all the songs of this duo had not bee posted. And sure enough all the extremely popular albums – Paying Guest, Solva Saal, Lajwanti, Nau Do Gyarah, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi etc- that the two have worked together on have made their appearance on the blog. So that left me with the 70s to put under the search engine (because post 31st October 1975 SD Burman was not there). The 70s have given us a few gems from this duo- Phagun, Abhimaan, Sagina, Arjun Pandit etc. and on running through “the list of songs moviewise and checking up the status of these movies I found we have one song posted from Arjun Pandit, all songs of Abhimaan, Phagun (3 out of 6) Sagina (all songs posted). That left only Arjun Pandit for my use. Then I checked up number of songs in the movie and one out of three are posted.

Bingo! Here is the next song. I sat through the uploaded version of the movie on YouTube – the actual movie might have been longer as the YouTube version had only two songs, so maybe some parts of the movie too, may have got edited on the way to the cyberworld. Was impressed by the star cast. More positive feelings when I saw the introduction of Bindu in the movie. And the good feeling didn’t diminish through the movie. Nothing could go wrong with the movie- after all Hrishikesh Mukherjee was the director, dialogues were by Gulzar, central character was played by Sanjeev Kumar. The rest of the cast were also good actors, even debutant actress Srividya (from the South Indian film industry).

A small introduction to Srividya. She was born in 1953 to the Carnatic classical singer M L Vasanthakumari and Tamil film comedian Krishnamurthy. She made her acting debut at a very young age as the family had financial problems as her father had to stop acting due to some illness. She was successful in all the four South Indian language cinemas. She was also an expert classical vocalist and had done playback singing in a few south movies. Her filmography says she has worked in 5 Bollywood movies and that “Jaise Ko Taisa” was her first Hindi movie. But the title card of “Arjun Pandit” says introducing “Srividya”. {Need experts to clarify this}.

Today’s song shows Srividya getting ready to receive her friend and Saajan. Very simple sweet lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri and simple orchestration by SD Burman. Only two singers were used in the movie- Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The Kishore Kumar song from this movie was posted on October 1, 2013 on the occasion of the lyricist and music director’s birthdate. {do we still have doubts about the birthdate of S D Burman as is mentioned by Bluefire in the comments to this posthttps://atulsongaday.me/2013/10/01/dil-mera-udaa-jaaye}

Oh, I just realized I have to explain about the Valmiki- inspiration angle to this movie. We have Sanjeev Kumar playing a henchman to the local Zamidaar (Rajan Haksar) who is dreaded by everyone in the village including his own daughter. Enter Ashok Kumar, as the doctor in the local village health centre and also a friend of the zamindar. His calm and loving nature inspires Sanjeev Kumar (Arjun Sardaar) to turn a new leaf, educate himself and make his daughter be comfortable when he is around. He goes on from being an illiterate strongman to a compassionate compounder to the doctor and finally also ends up looking after the family of the doctor as a responsible elder and family member would. So that then is the Valmiki part.

Song – Bolo Preetam, Kya Boli Thee Main Aage Re (Arjun Pandit) (1976) Singer – Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – SD Burman

Lyrics

ho oo ooo
oo oo ooo
bolo preetam
bolo preetam
kya boli thi main aage re
bolo preetam kya boli thi main
bolo preetam kya boli thi main aage re
bolo preetam kya boli thi main

kahin  bhi rooth ke jaaoge jaaoge
yahin pe laut ke aaoge aaoge
kahin bhi rooth ke jaaoge jaaoge
yahin pe laut ke aaoge aaoge
aaye na karke bahana piya

फिर तेरी याद नए गीत सुनाने आई

Yes, it is a story of every day – a song plays and memories come by. Or sometimes, memories passing thru remind of a song that is so very dear to the heart. That is all that remains now – memories and songs playing hide and seek in the dimly lit bylanes of the mind.

– – – –

The next song in this series comes from the 1976 film ‘Ladki Bholi Bhaali’. And incidentally this film is also making its debut on the blog today. That makes it three in a row today – 🙂 🙂 .

The film was directed by Ashok Roy for Mahesh Chitra, Bombay. The star cast listed for the film is Asha Sachdev, Gautam Sarin, Junior Mehmood, Ramesh Dev, Tarun Ghosh, Anita Guha, Ranveer Raj, Ram Mohan, Lalita Chatterjee, Rupali, Darshan, Krishan Duggal, Baldev Trehan, Manik Dutt, Master Devanand, Heena Kausar, Rakesh Pandey, Snehlata, Bharat Bhushan, and Dheeraj etc.

The film has music by Usha Khanna. Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film, three of which are from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri. All those three songs are solos in the voice of Asha Bhosle. The fourth song, which is the song presented today, is a duet in the voice of Rafi Sb and Usha Khanna herself. And it is written by Saawan Kumar Tak.

Saawan Kumar has had a good partnership with Usha Khanna. Usha ji has given music to 11 films which have either been directed by Saawan Kumar, or he has written lyrics for them. They were married, but the matrimonial relationship did not last for long. Together they have created such popular hits like “Barkha Rani, Zara Jam Ke Barso“, “Wo Jidhar Dekh Rahe Hain, Sab Udhar Dekh Rahe Hain” (both from ‘Sabak’, 1973) “Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Kadam. . .“, (‘Hawas’, 1974), “Sar e Mehfil Mera Imaan Beimaan Ho Gaya” (‘Ab Kya Hoga’, 1977), “Shaayad Meri Shaadi Ka Khyaal. . .“, “Zindagi Pyaar Ka Geet Hai” (both from ‘Souten’, 1983). (I am surprised that this last mentioned song is still waiting to come on board.)

Coming to today’s song, it is picturized on Rakesh Pandey and Asha Sachdev Snehlata, with Gautam Sarin also present in the scene and also lip-syncing some lines. I have not yet seen the film, and so the situation is not clear to me. I request other friends and readers who may have seen this film, to add some background information about the situation in this song.

The song is picturised as a villain’s den song on Shashi Puri (I hope I have identified him correctly, with Jayshree T performing a cabaret dance. Picturisation shows our intrepid hero apeing Amitabh Bachchan’s hairstyle and mannerisms, defying Shetty to perform on the stage. Shetty dutifully waits for the song to finish before making his move. 🙂

This “social” movie had ended up becoming an obscure movie by now.

The movie had three songs in it.

This song is picturised on Shatrughan Sinha and Mithu Mukherji.

This song was a fairly well known song during its time. The song had its fair run during its time after which this song got forgotten, helped by the fact that this forgettable movie itself got duly forgotten soon.

With this song, “Khaan Dost”(1976) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Kaahe ki dosti kaahe ki yaari (Khaan Dost)(1976) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

ye dosti
yaari mohabbat
hahahaha
kya hai
kuchh bhi nahin
sab dikhaawa hai
arre sab numaayish hai
numaayish ke siwa aa
kuchh bhi nahin

phir

kaahe ki dosti
kaahe ki yaari
kaahe ki dosti
kaahe ki yaari
duniya ye duniya hai
matlab ki maari
yaaron ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numaayish hai saari
kaahe ki dosti
kaahe ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numaayish hai saari

hey ae ae
kya rishte naate hain
baaten hi baaten hain
baaton ki ghaaton se dil loote jaate hain
kasmen to rasmen hain
duniya ke bas mein hain
duniya ki aankhon pe
do rangi chamshme hain
dekhi hai duniya
duniya ye duniya
dekhi hai duniya ki ye duniyaadaari
kaahe ki dosti
kaahe ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numaayish hai saari

hey ae ae
kaliyaan bik jaati hain
galiyon baazaron mein
dil ke beemaaron mein
jhoothhe dildaaron mein
maili har chunar hai
daagi har choli hai
teri bhi boli to yaaron ne boli hai
sab yaar tere
tere haan tere
sab yaar tere hawas ke pujaari
kaahe ki dosti
kaahe ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numaayish hai saari

hey ae ae
meri to hasti mein
masti hi masti hai
paas hai daulat to
ye duniya sasti hai
log sach kehte hain
haan main harjaai hoon
baat sach ye bhi hai
tera saudaai hoon
saaghar o meena se
jhoom ke peena hai
jab talak jeena hai
jhoom ke jeena hai
maine jo chaaha hai
haan wahi paaya hai
maanga kab duniya se
maine to chheena hai
baahon mein dam hai
phir kiska gham hai
taaqat ki sab karte hain taabedaari
kaahe ko dosti kaahe ki yaari
duniya ye duniya hai
matlab ki maari
yaaron ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numaayish hai saari
kaahe ki dosti kaahe ki yaari
yaaron ki yaari numayish hai saari

Hullo Atuldom

7th April 2018 is the 76th birthday of Ravi Kapoor- unbelievable. He has been around in the entertainment industry/ Bollywood since 1959 i.e. close to 60 years. WOW!!! That is a really long time. And we are fans of his and know him as JEETENDRA.

His first on-screen appearance was in V.Shantaram’s “Navrang” as Sandhya’s character’s double. Post that he got his first major break in Shantaram’s “Geet Gaya Pattharo ne”. 1967 saw him in diametrically different avatars in “Gunahon ka Devta” and “Farz”—and 51 years after “Farz” the epithet of “Jumping Jack” still reminds us of Jeetuji and his vigorous dancing prowess. The T-shirt and white shoes became his trademark and suited his lean frame. He has appeared in only about 200 films of which only 80 or so were made-in-south movies most of them remakes of successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. He was the preferred North-Indian star of that era as far as T. Rama Rao, L.V. Prasad, Rama Naidu and such other South Indian filmmakers were concerned. But there was another set of films that had him in completely subdued character as in “Parichay”, “Mere Humsafar”, “Khushboo”, “Kinara”, “Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke” and a long list of other movies.

He was loved by the audiences with any heroine he was paired right from Rajshree, Babita, Mala Sinha, Asha Parekh, Nanda and Mumtaz to the next set of ladies like Hema Malini, Rekha, Leena Chandavarkar, Reena Roy, Moushumi, and a few movies with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh and finally Sridevi and JayaPrada.

The above list looks like the roster of the heroines of the film industry. The only name that doesn’t feature in that list is that of Smita Patil as the only movie that featured the two, Smita was opposite to Dharamendra. And the list doesn’t name Rakhee, Jaya Bhadhuri (Bachchan), Bindiya Goswami, Radha, Bhanupriya, Madhavi, Meenakshi Seshadri, Madhuri Dixit etc. as they did only one or two movies each with Jeetuji.:) Phew! That is one long list. I am sure there are other heroines whose names are missing here. 🙂

As far as his acting style is concerned he must have been good to have lasted this long. I am sure people will say that he has survived on his dancing abilities alone, but then his movies with Gulzar at the helm didn’t have any dancing. He was a complete package of n actor who was comfortable with action, emotion, just standing and singing; dancing and singing.

His last silver screen appearance was in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” in the party song. He also produced a few movies, a business which is being looked after by his able daughter Ekta.

Today on his birthday I thought of all the possible songs and zeroed in on a song that is heard very often on the radio– mostly Vividh Bharathi, my staple source of film songs for years. It is from the 1976 released, L.V. Prasad produced “Udhar Ka Sindoor”. It was a remake of the Telugu movie “Manasullu Devudu”. The cast was headed by Jeetendra, Reena Roy and Asha Parekh with Prema Narayan, Asrani, Dheeraj Kumar, Manju Bansal (Asrani), Om Shivpuri and Urmila Bhat in supporting cast.

Just as a matter of trivia, here I feel like mentioning that Asha Parekh is the same age as Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and has co-starred as heroine to Jeetuji and RK but has been AB’s Bhabhi (in movies). Also, another point of interest which should be noted is Asha Parekh’s debut as heroine came in 1959 in “Dil Deke Dekho” and Jeetuji first appeared on-screen in 1959 in “Navrang” but as a character’s double.

Coming back to the movie “Udhar Ka Sindoor” (I sat through it to know what the movie was all about). It is a movie full of emotion- love for sister, love and gratitude towards foster-father; pinning to reunite with a lost sister; some drama on finding the sister, a groom for the foster-sister and then some action towards the end as by then the hero has become an inspector on the chase of a gang that forges currency. As it so happens the leader of the gang is the foster-brother who has to be pulled up for all the wrongs that he has committed including raping the lost-sister. That is why I said it was a movie full of EMOTIONS. And since there are two heroines, who happen to be sisters, there is a dose of sacrificing the hero for one another thrown in for good measure :). The hero is the lucky person as he gets to sing romantic songs with one sister and get married to the other and be worshipped by her since he married her despite her blindness.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rajesh Roshan was the music director.

Wishing all health and happiness to our “Jumping Jack” Jeetendra.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Baarood”(1976) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

The song is picturised on Shoma Anand and Rishi Kapoor, who are supposed to be flying on hand glider, but the picturisation shows them only in close up, and it is amply clear that they only posed with stationary hang gliders.

With this song, “Baarood”(1976) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Dil Kaanton mein uljhaaya hai (Baarood)(1976) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Dil kaanton mein uljhaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
dil kaanton mein uljhaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
shola shabnam mein lehraaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
dil kaanton mein

jaadoo sa chalne laga hai
mausam badalne laga hai
jaadoo sa chalne laga hai
mausam badalne laga hai
lagta hai mere seene se
dil baahar nikalne laga hai
sheeshaa patthar se takraayaa hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
dil kaanton mein uljhaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
dil kaanton mein

na paas aane diya hai
na door hone diya hai
na paas aane diya hai
na door hone diya hai
na honthon ko hansne diya hai
na aankhon ko rone diya hai
badaa zaalim ne tadapaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aaya hai
dil kaanton mein uljhaaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aaya hai
dil kaanton mein

aisa sitam karoon kaise
sainyaan banaa ye na jaane
jab tak ho sakaa ye hamse
hum roothhe rahe nahin maane
yehi gussa ye rang laaya hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aaya hai
dil kaanton mein uljhayaa hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
sholaa shabnam mein lehraayaa hai
ke ek dushman pe pyaar aayaa hai
dil kaanton mein

Here is the fourth song from “Baarood”(1976) to appear in the blog. This movie and several of songs were picturised on foreign locations. This song is no exception. This song is picturised on a yatch(Il hope it is called a yatch) where Shoma Anand lip syncs this seduction song for the benefit of Rishi Kaapoor. One cute dog is also present there, duly tied up.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Song-Samundar Samundar yahaan se wahaan tak(Baarood)(1976) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

hmm hmmm
samundar samundar
yahaan se wahaan tak
ye maujon ki chaadar
bichhee aasmaan tak
mere meharbaan
meri hadd hai kahaan tak
yahaan tak
hmmm yahaan tak
yahaan tak
samundar samundar
yahaan se wahaan tak
ye maujon ki chaadar
bichhee aasmaan tak
mere meharbaan
meri hadd hai kahaan tak
yahaan tak
to yahaan tak
achcha yahaan tak

main karti hoon vaadaa
uthhaati hoon kasmein
ye bulbul rahegi
sada tere bas mein
main karti hoon vaadaa
uthhaati hoon kasmein
ye bulbul rahegi
sada tere bas mein
mujhe qaid karte ho
kyon is kafas mein
main udakar bhi jaaoongi
aakhir kahaan tak
ye maujon ki chaadar
bichhee aasmaan tak
mere meharbaan
meri hadd hai kahaan tak
yahaan tak
bolo yahaan tak
humhhhhh yahaan tak

mohabbat se ye keh rahi hai jawaani
sitam ho chuke ab karo meharbaani
mohabbat se ye keh rahi hai jawaani
sitam ho chuke ab karo meharbaani
haseen pyaar ki koi chhedo kahaani
chali aayee hai baat dil ki zubaan tak
ye maujon ki chaadar
bichhee aasmaan tak
mere meharbaan
meri hadd hai kahaan tak
yahaan tak
hmmmm yahaan tak
yahaan tak
samundar samundar
yahaan se wahaan tak
ye maujon ki chaadar
bichhee aasmaan tak
mere meharbaan
meri had hai kahaan tak
achcha yahaan tak
to yahaan tak
hahaha yahaan tak
