Missing Films of 1960s – 72
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s film of the 1960s being introduced is ‘Badmaash’ from 1969.  A very obscure and unfamiliar film, that is known only by its presence in the Geet Kosh. But I was surprised when I checked out the cast. This film belongs to the Sheikh Mukhtar genre. His films may not be blockbusters, but still they are known only because they are Sheikh Mukhtar films. Even so, this film is lesser known in comparison.

It is well known that Sheikh Mukhtar would be churning out films very regularly, but he never established a production house that sustained. Practically all his films are produced under different banners. This film is from the banner of Saras Chitra, Bombay and is directed by BJ Patel. The star cast of this film reads like Sheikh Mukhtar, Helen, Chandrashekhar, Padma, NA Ansari, Vishwa Mehra, Dalda, Shashimala, Satyen Kappu, Jilani, Chandrakala, Surya Kumar, Bhagwan, Rachna, Jayshree, Satish Vyas, Nawab, Jaswant, Ajeet, Abdul Sattar, Nanak, Motu, and Nandini Desai. The regulars are all there – Chandrashekhar, Helen, NA Ansari. And then of course the lesser known regulars. A nearly new name for that era, which appears in this list is Satyen Kappu. We have known him from his character roles in films of 1970s and onward. On checking his filmography, we find that he makes his debut in this film, in all likelihood. I say it this way, because the available information for character artists is not very accurate. This is the earliest film in which his name is listed.

There are only four songs listed in the Geet Kosh, for this film. All the songs are from the pen of Anjaan. The music director is Avinash Vyas. A little surprising to read his name associated with this film. Not that he does not have other B/C grade films in his portfolio. But most of his films are either religious / mythological or fantasy / costume drama. ‘Badmaash’ seems to be his only stunt / crime drama film.

The singing voice is Krishna Kalle. As I have been reviewing the films of second half of 1960s, I find her name appear quite regularly in songs of B/C grade films of that era. This song seems to be a club/bar song, and the performer appears to be drunk herself. Given the cast of actors, it would seem that Helen is the female lead in this film, opposite to Chandrashekhar. It is possible that this song may be performed by her. Another possibility is Padma, a name that I think refers to Padma Khanna, who was also a leading dance item performer of that era. I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to please add more information about the film and its songs.

Rendering by Krishna Kalle is just too good. These types of songs were a monopoly of Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt – actually more of Asha Bhosle in that period of latter part of 1960s. With this song, one can see the potential that Krishna Kalle had to compete with Asha Bhosle.  But well, history is history. Listen and enjoy this definitive performance by her.

Song – Utha Palken Mila Nazren  (Badmaash) (1969) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Avinash Vyas

Lyrics

utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
behakta hai
agar ye dil
bura kya hai behakne de
utha palken
mila nazren

idhar to dekh
kaisi pyaas
machli hai nigaahon mein
idhar to dekh
kaisi pyaas
machli hai nigaahon mein
dhadakte dil ko le le
shokh baahon ki panaahon mein
mohabbat ki
nai khushboo
se ye saansen mehakne de
utha palken
ay
mila nazren

ye maana
saagar o meena ka
dilkash daur hota hai
ye maana
saagar o meena ka
dilkash daur hota hai
magar aankhon se peene ka
mazaa kuchh aur hota hai
haseen palkon
ke saaye mein
naye saagar khanakne de
utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
behakta hai
agar ye dil
bura kya hai behakne de
utha palken
mila nazren
