Hullo Atuldom

“Satta Baazaar” (1959) was a Nagina Films production. It was directed by Ravindra Dave and starred Meena Kumari and Balraj Sahni in the lead with Johnny Walker leading the supporting cast of Ramayan Tiwari, Asit Sen, Suresh, Uma Dutt, Narmada Shankar etc. Vijaya Choudhury played Balraj Sahni’s daughter Kala. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra, Indeevar and Gulshan Bawra were the lyrics in-charge. Hemant Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Suman Kalyanpur were the playback singers.

Of the movie’s eight songs, four have been posted on the blog. The movie’s best and most popular song was posted on 21st February 2009:- Tumhen yaad hoga. The next song suno jee aankde ka dhandha came in 2012. It was followed by Chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye. Zara thherhro jee Abdul Gaffa was the last song posted. It has a wonderful post by our in-house encyclopedia Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji. He has given us the story of the movie too in there along with the biography of actor Suresh (real name Nazim Ahmed as Sir has mentioned in his post).

Today’s song I discovered when I was looking for a song, when I was writing a post for music director Kalyanji’s anniversary in August and filed it away for use on another occasion. The occasion is the birth anniversary of Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi popular as Johnny Walker.

He was born in Indore and came to Bombay (as Mumbai used to be called) to earn a living and help look after his family. He took up various jobs before becoming a Conductor in Bombay’s BEST Undertaking. His anecdotes are there in this this video where he speaks to Tom Alter about how he modulated his voice for enhancing his characters. That is an interesting video. He speaks about how Balraj Sahni found his way of going about his job good enough to recommend him to Guru Dutt.

Today’s song is a dance with folk art in it. It has Johnny Walker and Sabita Chatterjee (in Marathi getup) teasing each other on the occasion of Vijaya Choudary’s engagement.

Let us think of Johnny Walker entertainer and enjoy Mohd Rafi singing as if Johnny himself is singing in typical Marathi folk style. Suman Kalyanpur is the voice for Sabita Chatterjee.
