Chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye

Posted on: September 26, 2012

“Satta Baazaar” (1959) was a Nagina Films production. It was directed by Ravindra Dave. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Meena Kumari, Krishnakant, Suresh, Vijaya Choudhry, Asit Sen, Johnny Walker, Tiwari etc in it.

Here is a song from “Satta Baazaar” (1959)”. This song is sung by Hemant Kumar whose death anniversary falls today. This song is a background song which shows Krishnakant getting married to another woman instead of the lady he professed to love, all that for the sake of money. I have not seen the movie but that is what I can make out by listening to the lyrics of this song. I request our knowledgeable redaers to throw more light on the picturisation of this movie.

The song is written by Gulshan Baawra. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The lyrics in the audio and video version differ slightly as far as repetition of a few lines are concerned. In addition, two lines that are there in the audio version have been cut off from the picturisation, perhaps by the maker of the movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye (Satta Baazaar)(1959) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Gulshan Baawra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
masjid mein khuda aur mandir mein
bhagwaan ko bechaa jaata hai
bhagwaan ko bechaa jaata hai
chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai

kya aisi bhi kuchh kaliyaan hain
jo na bole na munh khole
kya aisi bhi kuchh kaliyaan hain
jo na bole na munh khole
daulat ke tarazu mein in ko
khud bechne waale hi tole
saiyaadon ki is basti mein
anjaan ko bechaa jaata hai
anjaan ko bechaa jaata hai
chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai

har cheez ka sauda hota hai
har cheez yahaan par bikti hai
har cheez ka sauda hota hai
har cheez yahaan par bikti hai
dhanwaalon ke aage nirdhan kya
ab saari khudaayi jhukti hai
bebas insaanon ke har ik
armaan ko bechaa jaata hai
armaan ko bechaa jaata hai
chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai

ae maalik toone likkhi hai
patthhar ke kalam se taqdeeren
ae maalik toone likkhi hai
patthar ke kalam se taqdeeren
majboor mussabbir bech raha
ye khoon e jigar ki tasweeren
insaan ke haathon bhi ab to
insaan ko bechaa jaata hai
insaan ko bechaa jaata hai
chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai
imaan ko bechaa jaata hai

I have not seen the movie, but the romatic hero casted opposite Vijaya Choudhury is Shekhar(on these two actors the famous song from the movie “Tumhein/tujhe yaad hogaa kabhi hum mile the, mohabbat ki raahon pe milke chale the”Hemant,Lata popular duet)

And the bride is Vijaya Chaudhury and the bridegroom is Krishnakanth and the another actor featured in the song is Ramayan Tiwari(another man with a cap) besides Meena Kumari and Balraj Sahni

Atul ji,
SATTA BAZAR-1959 was a Nagina Film venture, directed by the Producer Ravindra Dave himself.
Ramesh(Balraj Sahni) a widower remarries Jamuna(meena Kumari). He has a daughter Kala(Vijaya Chaudhari) from the first marriage.Kala is in love with Shyam(Suresh and NOT Shekhar as prakash ji says).Kala hates her stem mother, but Jamuna gives her mother’s love.Kala and Shyam are engaged despite this being an intercast marriage.
Meanwhile Ramesh indulges in Stock exchange dealings with advice from Ramanand Tiwari. After few gains,Ramesh loses all his money and is bankrupt.Tiwari offers help with a condition that Kala marries his son Krishnakant.
Out of compulsion,Kala has to marry krishnakant.
This is the scene depicted in above song.

Oh, well, during Radio days, the lyrics of this song used to make me feel like a punch into my stomach. At one point I even decided to join the socialist party. (Certainly my dad would have disapproved).
Now living under capitalist government.
Hopefully, now it’s the time to eradicated the dowry system from India.

Probably u r not up to date with things in India. More women using false dowry claims to harass their in-laws these days 😉 I believe same thing happened to Nirupa Roy also just before she passed away. Favorite bollywood mother and harassing daughter in law 😉

Oh, bllufireji.
I mean dowry works both ways, when old man/uneducated man/ or man with lack of integrity, morale or honesty can pay huge money and buy a girl to be his wife.
On other end, a family with a son/man, would like to have their son marry to a girl who will come with the huge money and luxury goods.
Even today, this kind of stories are most superlative gut-wrenching to me. Sorry to say but I feel terribly sad on this issue.
personally, I hate our big fat Indian weddings and all that glitters of gold.
Nowadays, I do not like any kind of gold on me, I think it makes you look cheap and shallow thinking person. Besides, in USA, gold is the color of the gangs (thugs).. Have you seen those gangs bangers? A huge gold neckless hanging on them with very large gold/diamond wrist watch.
I think wearing an excessive amount of gold jewelry is the sign of gang affiliation .
Oh, yes, I have read that saga of Nirupa Roy, it just sickening to me.

Well, elders had better intentions as far as gold is concerned. Give newlyweds the gold so it would be there for the rainy day and can be useful to them. Like for example, Dhiru bhai started with his wife’s jewelry. At least in Gujarat, both sides used to give gold to the bride for this purpose, not just she would be bringing gold. My mother gave so much gold to her american daughter-in-law as well. Idea was never to dress up with so much gold, but was for better investment purpose. Greedy people have made the whole thing worse taking the concept of dowry too far. I have had friends from UP and Bihar, etc, or even from South, who are very well educated and well-off. But their point is they would be forced to give all these things to their sisters, so to make it up, they also have to make demands. So its a fair trade to them. The way currencies all over the world are devaluing these days, and there are talks of Republicans bringing the gold standard back and so on, gold remains the hottest commodity. 3 years ago, a quite a few of people that I know, took everything out of their 401K and invested in gold and silver, and they have made their investments at least double. I just keep asking myself why m i always behind 🙂 Anyways, things start with good intentions but get twisted over the time…
