When we discuss songs in the blog, sometimes they are accompanied by statistics. We can notice that discussions sometimes become clearer when we deal objectively (in numbers )rather than subjectively(using adjectives). We can give the facts, let the readers can judge for themselves.

One wonders how music can be expressed objectively. Music is sound. vocals and instrumentals follow rules of musical grammar where only sounds of particular frequencies (notes) are created. These notes form octaves. Beats (rhythm) are marker sounds that are made at regular intervals. Notes and beats together compose music.

There are different kinds of music. Classical music and non classical popular (or sugam) music. Indian music is based on melody. Western music is based on harmony. All these discussions become intricate and involve lots of mathematics and physics. Even musical instruments need to be manufactured like how any industrial age materials are manufactured with close tolerances so that they can create desired kinds of sounds.

We will not go into such intricate details, of course. We had started a series on musical principles but that stopped after five episodes because it became too technical for most people.

Instead of physics and mathematics, we can atleast discuss numbers, like which singer has sung how many songs under which music director. Such discussions are easy to understand. We have had many such posts. Mahesh Mamadapur, a Mukesh devotee, has an ongoing Mukesh series where he discusses Mukesh songs with various music directors, where he furnishes table that provided full list of Mukesh songs with that music composer. Curiously, he waits till only one song with that music director is left to be covered so that his post ends up covering all Mukesh songs with that music director. 🙂

That reminded me that I too have carried out a detailed research on Lata Mangeshkar song, when I undertook a marathon series on Lata Mangeshkar, where I used to cover one calender year evey monday. It took me 63 weeks (beginning from september 2020 till december 2021) before I could cover entire filmography of Lata Mangeshkar.

During that series, I gathered lots and lots of statistics stored in tables that were not used at that time. But those statistics offer me valuable insight and interesting information about the artists Lata Mangeshkar worked with.

I will come up with some statistical discussions on Lata Mangeshkar collaboration with lyricists and music director pairs. Here I begin my discussion with Safdar Aah Sitapuri as lyricist and Anil Biswas as music director. Together these two have worked in many movies of 1940s and their collaboration spilled over to 1950s as well. But when their collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar is concerned, the three of them created a sum total of four songs (all solos) in three movies. Here are the details:-

Song Movie (year) Status in blog
Ek mera dil ek unka dil Laajawaab (1950) Covered on 12 February 2010
Aaye thhe dhadkan lekar dil mein Laajawaab (1950) Not covered. Being covered today
Munshi daroga ik arzi likho Badi Bahu (1951) Covered on 7 September 2014
Guzra hua ulfat ka zamaana Maan (1954) Covered on 21 june 2017

We see that Lyricist-Safdar Aah Sitapuri, Music director-Anil Biswas, Singer-Lata Mangeshkar combination gave us four songs. Three songs are already covered in the blog. That leaves us with just one song.

Here is that one leftover song. This song is from “Laajawaab”(1950). Incidentally, “Laajawaab”(1950) was the first movie where the three of them worked together for the first time. Moreover, it is the only movie where they collaborated to give more than one song, namely two songs. Subsequently, they would work in two more movies, and they would come up with one song each in those movies.

“Laajawaab”(1950) was produced by Ashalata Biswas and directed by J P Advani for Variety pictures, Bombay. The movie had Sohan, Rehana, Kuldip, David, Kavita, Pran, Iftikhar, Prem Dhawan, Randhir etc.in it.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Six songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the seventh song from “Laajawaab”(1950) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Safdar Aah Sitapuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.

The movie also had two other female playback singers namely Binapani Mukherjee and Meena Kapoor. So it is difficult to guess who lip synced the song in whose voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
