The first social drama TV serial (also called soap operas) on Doordarshan was ‘Humlog’ (1984). The huge success of this TV serial prompted other producers to come out with soap operas which needed to be telecasted only on Doordarshan as no private TV channels were in operation at that time. They had to find the free slots on Doordarshan which became difficult as years passed. Doordarshan generally accepted the TV serials ranging from 13, 26 and at most 52 episodes with few exceptions. The restriction of the number of episodes meant that more number of TV Serial makers could be accommodated apart from ensuring the TV serials were not unnecessarily stretched at the cost of their qualitative contents.

By early 1990s, the private TV channels started their operations in India offering somewhat more flexibility to the TV serial makers in terms of alternative options of telecasting and extending the number of episodes depending upon the TRP of the serials. By the end of the 1990s, soap operas had become one of the most popular forms of entertainment on the TV channels. They continue to be popular if one goes by the number of soap operas being telecast.

Most of the TV serials including soap operas in their early days would have title songs, setting out the main theme of the story. The title songs would generally get played at the beginning of each episode. I am very fond of some of the title/theme songs which sounds different from typical Hindi film songs. In this article, I am going to present a theme song from a very popular soap opera, ‘Kuchh To Log Kahenge’ (2011) which was telecast on Sony TV during October 2011 to March 2013. The story is said to have been inspired from a Pakistani TV serial, ‘Dhoop Kinaara’.

As was my practice those days, I had seen a few episodes of this serial at the start. I liked it because I felt that the romantic relationship was being presented with a mix of light comedy and the mild melodrama. It was probably a novelty for a TV serial to show a romantic relationship between a young girl who has just completed her medical degree with a middle-age Dean of a hospital. But later on, I stopped watching when I observed that the story was unnecessarily being stretched so much that there would be not much progress in the story. Even if I resume watching the serial after missing a few episodes, I will not miss much on the continuity of the story. I do not recall that I had watched the later episodes of this serial. So, recently I randomly watched some of the missed episodes to understand as to how the story progressed. And I felt it was qualitatively good both in terms of performance and presentation.

The broad outline of the story is as under:

The story is set in a Lucknow hospital where Dr Ashutosh Mathur (Mohnish Behl) is the Dean and Dr Mallika (Rukhsar Rehman), a senior doctor is one of his colleagues and a close confidant. Ashutosh knows that Mallika has a soft corner for him for a long time and loves him. But due to some happenings in his life, he does not want to convert her friendship with Mallika to a higher level of a romantic relationship. Over a period of time, he has also acquired a stern attitude towards his juniors.

Dr Nidhi Verma (Kritika Kamra) who had done the internship under Dr Ashutosh, joins the hospital. Ashutosh is not impressed with her child-like behavior and for not taking her work seriously. Despite Nidhi getting dribblings from Ashutosh, Nidhi falls in love with him, and she knows that he also loves her, But Ashutosh refrains from reciprocating his love for her. His attitude towards Nidhi is that of one of the subordinates to him. But it is the jealousy of Dr Mallika that makes Nidhi’s working environment difficult. She finds some or the other faults in her which are often not of her making. Ashutosh supports Mallika mainly because of his long association with her which gives him confidence that she cannot be wrong. This leads to the termination of Nidhi’s services. This creates a void between Nidhi and Ashutosh and vows not to see him in future.

Nidhi gets a job at a different hospital. During a medical conference in Mumbai, Nidhi is surprised to see him in the Conference but Ashutosh is not aware of her presence. Ashutosh is the first speaker in the conference in which he emphasises the seniors to learn from their juniors. He share his own experience with a internee (without naming Nidhi) as to how she thought him dealing with child patients in the hospital. Nidhi is pleasantly surprise to hear praise for a junior which he never expressed in a work situation. During the meeting, Mallika reveals to Nidhi that she has got her new employment on the recommendation of Ashutosh. His actions confirms that Ashutosh still has a soft corner for Nidhi but he does not want to reciprocate for his own reasons. It is Armaan (Nitesh Pandey), Ashutosh’s friend and Rohan (Karan Wahi), Nidhi’s friend who became aware of Ashutosh and Nidhi liking for each other. They successfully bring out a rapprochement between them. After a series of dates and overcoming family problems, they get married. With this, the Season-I of the Serial ends.

I have not discussed in the story the parallel love tracks and family feuds in the serial as it would become too long. Also, I felt that these tracks may have been added later to stretch the serial. Despite this, I found ‘Kuchh To Log Kahenge’ superior in quality and content than what we presently see in most of the soap operas. It was a challenging role for Mohnish Behl as a stern looking boss but in his heart he has a soft corner for Nidhi. And he has performed his role very admirably. Another plus point in this serial is the superb use of background music, especially when Ashutosh and Nidhi are on the screen, which are pleasant to the ears.

I am presenting the theme song of the serial, ‘sainyaan nainon ki bhaasha samjhe na’ which is rendered by Sukanya Purkayastha, an upcoming playback singer in Assamese and Hindi films. The name of the lyricist is not known. The song is set to music by Dony Hazarika who is also a professional singer, the music producer, and the sound engineer. He has also assisted music director, Vanraj Bhatia. Incidentally, both Sukanya and Dony Hazarika are from Assam.

This is one of the exceptional songs where the song starts with the antara tune and glides to the mukhda tune. So, I have given the caption of the song played with mukhda tune. This song is often played in the background, either by way of one liner or parts of the interludes of the song whenever Mohnish Behl and Kritika Kamra appears together in the scenes. This is an effective way of conveying to the audience that although both Nidhi and Ashutosh love each other, Ashutosh is unable to openly reveal his mind. The song is fully played in the background when Nidhi carries the cake with candle lights in the seating room, on the occasion of the birthday celebration of her father, Col. Yograj Verma (Vijay Kashyap). Ashutosh is also present for the occasion on the invitation of Nidhi.

As I said earlier, I am very fond of the title/theme songs of the TV serials and the song under discussion is one of them which I like for its lyrics, melody, and rendition.
