Today’s song is from a film made in Madras – ‘Naya Aadmi’ (1956).
The film was made by Jupiter Films, Madras, simultaneously along with the Telugu film ‘Santosham’. The cast was mainly from the South, taking few Hindi actors for the Hindi film, like Anwar Hussain, Gope and Helen (her first Telugu film incidentally, when she danced in film ‘Santosham’ also). The Music Director pair was Vishwanath – Rammurthy (their first Hindi film) with 8 songs and Madan Mohan with just 3 songs. The cast was Anjali Devi (South), NT Rama Rao, Jamuna, Raja Sulochana etc. For the Hindi lyrics it was, of course, Rajendra Krishna- the South’s favourite.
The year 1948 was a historical one for Madras Film Industry, because it was the year in which the adventurous producer SS Vasan of Gemini Films made a bilingual film in Tamil and Hindi – ‘Chandralekha’. He made the film on a mammoth scale, not only production cost wise but he made his entry – rather invasion on the Hindi belt, with 600 prints in Hindi and releasing the film all over India on the same date i.e. 24th December 1948. With this dhamaka, the Madras producers woke up shaken when they saw Vasan visiting his bank daily with several bags full of cash to deposit. This made the producers join the bandwagon by dubbing and remaking Hindi films from their hit Tamil and Telugu films.
All the years of the period from 1948 to 1975 were full of films made in Hindi through dubbing or remaking with or without Southern stars or with a mixed cast. IMDB lists hundreds of such films on their pages. Many major Heroes of South secretly nurtured a desire to shine in the Hindi belt. They joined this race. Actors like MG Ramchandran (MGR), NT Rama Rao (NTR), A Nageshwar Rao (ANR), Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan etc., actresses like Bhanumathy, Jayalalitha, Jamuna etc. and character artistes like Relang, SV Ranga Rao etc appeared in Hindi films, though their biggest problem was speaking in Hindi. Even today many Southern hit films are remade or dubbed in Hindi and the addition is, many Hindi hits are also remade in Southern languages. The West Bengal Film Industry which actually led this trend in the 30’s and the 40’s has fallen way behind now.
The film was directed by CP Dixit. The original film was Tamil Hit film ‘VELAIKARI’ – 1949, which was remade as ‘Naya Aadmi’ in Hindi in 1956, ‘Santosham’ in Telugu in 1956 and also as ‘Malli Maduve’ in Kannada in 1963. Jupiter Pictures, one of the top Tamil banners of the time, entered into a five film contract with matinee idol NT Rama Rao and simultaneously remade their box office Tamil hit ‘Velaikari’ (1949) as ‘Santhosham’ in Telugu and ‘Naya Aadmi’ in Hindi. Interestingly ‘Velaikari’ was also released in some Telugu provinces with the title ‘Dasi Kanya’ in Telugu in the posters. CP Dixit who assisted LV Prasad for the Hindi version of Jupiter’s Tamil, Hindi bilingual ‘Rani’ (1952) was signed to direct both ‘Santhosham’ and ‘Naya Aadmi’. The cast for both the versions remained the same but for Anwar Hussain stepping in for Jaggaiah and comedian Gope replacing Relang for ‘Naya Aadmi’.
Though NTR acted in 23 Hindi movies, ‘Naya Aadmi’ (1956) was the only film which was simultaneously made in Hindi and Telugu and hence so to say, was his only Hindi film. The other 22 films were dubbed in Hindi. Speaking of the ‘comic talent’ of NTR, let me tell you, there was one movie in 1954, ‘VADDANTE DABBU’ (which means – Money when denied also), in which NTR with ANR (Akkineni Nageshwar Rao), Jamuna and Janki made a tremendous impact in comedy. This film became so popular that later he was offered comedy roles only. He, however, continued with mythology and historical films. Incidentally, this was a remake of a Marathi film ‘LAKHACHI GOSHT’ (1952), which was the story of a Lakh of Rupees, starring Raja Paranjape, Raja Gosavi, Chitra and Rekha etc. In the 40s and 50s, Hindi, Marathi and Telugu films were exchanging themes, without obligation.
The story of the film was,
Mayadas, a money lender is a wealthy widower, whose son Shekhar loves their maid Chandani and his daughter Rajani hates her. Sitaram who took loan to educate son Anand cannot repay and Mayadas auctions his house. Sitaram commits suicide. His son Anand returns and knows this. He plans revenge on Mayadas.
One day Anand and his friend Jaggu find the dead body of Parmanand, a rich Zamindar from England. Anand is his look-alike and impersonates him. The blind mother receives him gladly and fixes his marriage with Rajani. After marriage, Anand tortures Rajani, uses all her money and insults Mayadas openly. He also creates rift between Shekhar and Mayadas. Mayadas throws Shekhar out and burns Chandani’s house.
Now Shekhar wants to take revenge on Anand.
The further story tells us how both the men are converted to goodness and how everything settles down to normalcy with respective persons learning their lessons in life.
In the cast of the film, you will find a name Raja Sulochana. At first glance one gets confused if this was a male or a female actor. This happened because the name of the actress was Rajsulochana, but later it was written as Raja Sulochana in all her films. Chittajallu Rajeevalochana (15 August 1935 – 5 March 2013), better known as Rajsulochana, was a classical dancer and actress. She has acted in more than 300 Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi language films.
She was born on 15 August 1935 in Bezawada (now Vijayawada), in Andhra Pradesh. Her father, Pilliarchetty Bhakthavatsalam Naidu worked in Indian Railways and was transferred to Madras as PA to the General Manager of M&SM Railway. At school, her name was recorded in error as Raja Sulochana. She learned Indian classical dance from Lalithamma, KN Dhandayuthapani Pillai, Acharyulu and Vempati Chinna Satyam, Krishnakumar, Vishnu Vysarkar, and Kalamandalam Madhavan.
The Kannada stage and screen maestro HLN Simha gave her an acting opportunity in ‘Gunasagari’ (Kannada, 1953), produced by Gubbi Veeranna. Subsequently, she acted in about 274 films in all South Indian languages. She acted with all the leading stars of South Indian cinema such as MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Rajkumar, SS Rajendran, Prem Nazir, AP Nagarajan and MN Nambiar.
Raja Sulochana was a special friend of the boss AV Meiyappan and he was trying to push her in Hindi films. It was rumored that due to this only, the song “Tum Arbon Ka Her Pher Karne Waale Ram Ji” and dance item was thrust in ‘Chori Chori’ (1956), even if it did look like a patch, having no connection to the picture story in any manner !
Raja Sulochana was a good dancer/actress and acted in some 80 odd Telugu, Kannada and Tamil movies. She acted/danced in few Hindi movies like ‘Aayi Phirse Bahar’, ‘Alladin Ka Chirag’, ‘Naya Aadmi’, ‘Sitaron Se Aage’ etc.
She founded the dance school ‘Pushpanjali Nritya Kala Kendram’ in 1961 in Chennai. It has trained many students in Indian classical dance forms and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1986. She gave many dance performances in India and abroad and got critical acclaim for the dance dramas.
She had a son out of her first marriage and after it ended in a divorce, she married actor-director CS Rao and had twin daughters. One daughter lives in Chennai. The other twin daughter and son live in Chicago, Illinois.
Raja Sulochana died in Chennai on 5 March 2013 at the age of 77. Condoling her death, the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had said that the actress had left an imprint for herself in the film industry. She was engaged in creating artistes in her dance school ‘Pushpanjali Nritya Kala Kendram’ here, Jayalalithaa had said.
So far, 5 songs are already discussed on this Blog, from this film. Today’s song is the 6th song. It is the only solo song of Geeta Dutt in this film. It is a good song. Incidentally all tunes of this film’s songs are taken from the original Telugu film, so Madan Mohan was reduced only to be an arranger and not an MD ! Today’s song is credited to Vishwanath-Rammurthy.
