A very very Happy Birthday to the Eighth Avatar of Lord Vishnu – Shree Krishna. He also goes by the names- Kaanha, Nandlala, Gopala, Govinda, Kanhaiya, Guruvayurappa, Dwarikadheesh, Mohan, Giridhar, Jagannath, Chakradhar, Kannan, Srinathji, Vithoba, Parthasarthy, Radha Vallabh, Gopi Krishna etc. The names are all due to the various legends associated with the Lord during his stay on this earth as the Eighth Avatar. Some of the names of the Lord hold regional importance.
Shree Krishna is the God of protection, compassion, tenderness, love etc. and is one of the most popular divinities. I wouldn’t be wrong if I say that Shree Ganesha is the other popular divinity. Shree Krishna’s iconography reflects these legends, and shows him in different stages of his life, such as an infant eating butter (Maakhan Chor) , a young boy playing a flute (Murlidhar), a young boy with Radha (Radha Vallabh) or surrounded by female devotees (Gopi Krishna), or a friendly charioteer giving counsel to Arjuna (Parthasarthy).
Indian music – both classical & non classical – has numerous songs bhajans etc. that sing praises of the Lord, ask favors from the Lord etc. Some of them have found their way into dance ballets, theater etc. Then will the film industry remain devoid of songs praising the lord. Remember “Bada Natkhat Hai Re Krishna Kanhaiya“, “Govinda Aala Re Aala“, “He Re Kanhaiya Kisko Kahega Tu Maiyya“, “Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal Chhed Gayo Re“and many more that have been present in films right from the start of Indian talkies.
Today’s song is from the 1970 release ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani’. It was directed by T Prakash Rao and produced by B Nagi Reddy & Chakrapani. It had songs written by Rajendra Krishan, Hasrat Jaipuri & Qamar Jalalabadi and composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Hemlata, and Mahendra Kapoor were the playback singers used. Balraj Sahni & Nirupa Roy played central characters as parents to Master Ripple, Baby Sonia & Master Mahesh. Gajanan Jagirdar, Sulochana Chatterjee, Maruti, Jagdeep, Shabnam, Praveen Paul, Jalal Agha etc. with Junior Mehmood formed the rest of the cast. Shashikala & Om Prakash were there in special appearances. Any Indian movie, whatever be the main plot, need a young romantic couple – Bharati & Rakesh Roshan were that couple.
The situation for today’s song is that the marriage of the young couple is being fixed. The bride-to-be is requested to sing some song and showcase her talent. Now she cannot sing the feelings of her heart directly to her lover in the presence of elders so she resorts to singing a song praising ‘Kaanha’. The song enters fantasy mode and we have Bharathi & Rakesh Roshan turning into Radha & Krishna.
We can also use this opportunity to wish Rakesh Roshan on his birthday today. He was born on 6th September 1949. He is the son of yesteryear music director Roshan, brother of present day music director Rajesh Roshan and father of Hrithik Roshan. He is an actor and filmmaker associated with many successful Hindi films most of which have titles starting with the letter ‘K’. ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani’ was his debut film, he looks very very young and vulnerable in this song. He must have been only 20 when he shot for this song.
