Today’s song is from an extremely obscure film Chhoti Duniya-1953.
The reason this film is so obscure is that the film was made by an unknown banner – Meera Productions, Ahmedabad. The producer’s name- D.M.Sheth- was as unknown as this film’s director- cum – Hero, Uday Kumar. The entire list of the starcast was almost full of less known or unknown artistes like Uday Kumar, Leela Kumari, Nannoo, Ranjit kumari, Ashwini Roy, B.Lalwani, Mulji Khushal, Babu, Chander, Asha etc. Since it was a film produced in Gujarat, it is possible that some of the artistes may be from Gujarathi films or stage dramas. If so and if any of the readers know it, kindly mention it in the Comments column.
The combined perfect obscurity of the film and its makers made it extremely difficult to get any information about the film or the actors. Even one of the singers-Shrimati Vishnilal-was an unknown name. Forget about all these names, even the Music Director of this film – Rajhans Kataria- was not a name heard earlier. May be he was a Gujarati or Rajasthani composer or a stage drama composer.
I am sure you must have heard the names of Music Directors Fakir Muhammed, Shambhoo, Dattaraj, Brij Bhushan, Raj Ratan, Ronodev Mukherjee, Kamalkant, Vishnu Khanna, Ajay, Baboo Singh or Vijay Honavar ? Your blank face says, you have never heard their names. I am not asking you names of Music Directors from the 1930s or 1940s. All these were composers in the 1960s. If I ask you about Satyam, Jagdish or Ratandeep-Hemraj, what will you say ?These were Music Directors in the 1970s. They composed music for 5 to 15 films each in the 70s.
Can one tell how many composers gave music in Hindi films from 1931 to till today ? It is extremely difficult to make a list of Music Directors. This is because there were many who gave music in just one or two movies. In many cases even the names of the composers are not known. If this is the case of the name itself, getting their Biographies is a distant dream !
Right from 1931 till today, according to Harish Raghuwanshi ji, 3000 Music Directors operated in Hindi film industry. muVyz counted 2088 and it was still counting. Most of these were those who gave music to just one film and disappeared. Still- they all contributed to the HFM legacy. Hardly any serious effort seems to have been made to collect information about at least those who gave music to 5 or more films.
I have two books on Music Directors-
1. Dhunon ki Yatra-Pankaj Raag and
2. Film Sangeetkar-Suvarnayugwale- Prof. Yogesh Yadav
There could be some more such books, which I do not know.
The Pankaj Raag book is a solid 800 pages book costing around 1500/- approx. now. This book gives detailed information on 117 Music Directors and Some information on another 137 Music Directors from 1931 to 2000. The book also mentions names and films of another 200 or so composers who did just 1 or 2 films. Prof. Yadav’s book lists short information about 151 composers. Thus we have about 500 composers with some information to talk about. Still, a large number remains without any data.
From time to time, some relative of a forgotten MD springs up and gives some information. Sometime back, the daughter of composer/singer K.S.Ragi appeared on Facebook and gave some valuable information on her father. Likewise the son and daughter of composer V.K.Naidu commented on this Blog to give information. Similarly the daughter of Ghantasala came on Facebook and gave some information on Ghantasala’s Hindi work. Same way the nephew of C. Arjun commented on ‘songs of yore’ and clarified some matters.
But this is by Luck. Otherwise many composers are buried under obscurity and anonymity. How many of us have heard the name of Composer Rajhans Kataria ? There was a film “Gandhi Mandir” produced sometime in the last days of the 1940s (probably 1949). It was made by Meera Pictures, produced by Y.D.Shaikh, directed by Roop Sanware and its cast was Nirupa Roy, Pran,Uday Kumar, Ramsingh etc (according to an advertisement copy sent to me by shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji). The music director of this movie was Rajhans Kataria. The name of the film was changed to Afsana(aka Kalakar). This film features in HFGK as an unreleased film. It was not even Censored. However 12 songs were issued on Records by the name “Gandhi mandir” only.
Rajhans Kataria then gave music to 2 more films. “Ek tha Ladka”-51 and “Chhoti Duniya”-53. Then he simply vanished. No information whatsoever is available anywhere on him.
Despite all this anonymity, it is a wonder that 3 songs of this film are already discussed on this Blog. Today’s song will be the 4th song here. Such obscure films and names are a real challenge. Despite all this, I was able to get the story of this film from its Booklet and also could find some information on the singer, luckily. The story of this film was……
Jyotin and kamini were stage artistes in a drama company. The loved each others. Suresh, the proprietor of the drama company also loved Kamini, but when the marriage of Jyotin and kamini was announced, Suresh withdrew his name from the race on his own without letting Kamini know about it.
In due course, kamini is pregnant, she leaves the drama company and a baby boy is born. Jyotin, very happily works more to provide for the family. one day Jyotin’s relative Kishore comes as aguest to live for few days. As Jyotin is away for tours and his drama work, Kishore and Kamini get into relationship and one day the elope, with kamini’s son. Its a shock to jyotin and he becomes a recluse leaving work. However Suresh, his friend and the head of his company manages to bring him back to stage work, with a new Heroine Rajani.
One day Jyotin meets with an accident and Rajni looks after him so kindly that by the time he recovers they decide to get married. On the other side, Kishore and Kamini start fighting with each others on the issue of Kamini’s son. One day when the son is very sick, Kishore runs away from Kamini. She is helpless and send a telegram to Jyotin about all this and asks for his help. He gets the telegram but decides to ignore it. However, Suresh comes to know and reads the telegram.
Suresh goes to the help of Kamini, as he is still in her love. Finally Kamini realises her blunder and says yes to Suresh’s marriage proposal. Suresh officially adopts Kamini’s son. They get married and both the couples are happy.
Today’s song is sung by S. Balbir and Shrimati Vishnilal. We know about Balbir. Now let us know about Vishnilal. VISHNI LAL was born in Hyderabad( Sindh) in 1926. She came to Bombay in 1943 to sing in films. Ram Daryani recommended her to Khemchand Prakash and he gave a break to her in the film Chiragh-43. She sang 14 songs in very few films like Qurbani-43, Anjuman-48, Mitti ke khilone-48, Maghroor-50, Damad-51, and Chhoti Duniya-53 .
Her family shifted to Bombay in 1947,after Partition. She was married to a businessman Mansukhani, in 1953. She then settled in Dubai, with her family.
The Lyricist’s name was Bekal Utsahi. He also wrote the film’s dialogues. being an obscure film, on the Internet, everywhere a poster of another more known film Chhoti si Duniya is shown for this film. The film Chhoti si Dunia-1939 had P.Jairaj and Leela Chitnis as a lead pair. By chance the film was directed by one B.S.Rajhans- 6 films from 1930 to 1939.
Let us now enjoy the song sung by Balbir and Vishnilal….
