Today’s song is from the film Sangam-1954.
The first film with the title ‘Sangam’ was made in 1941, the second in 1954 and the third one in 1964. The most famous was the 1964 film with Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanti Mala. It was a Love triangle film with very good songs, composed by Shankar-Jaikishen.
Today’s film was neither a Love Triangle nor a Love Square. It was a simple story on the ” Crime does not pay” principle. It was also a case of ” Talent alone does not succeed in Hindi film world “. To prove this point, take the case of Ram Ganguli – the Music Director of this film.
There are cases in history, where Talent alone has not helped. The Luck factor plays a vital role in one’s life. But then, what is Luck ? Call it opportunity, recognition, fame, money…. call it what you may like to, but Luck is a factor.
Otherwise, so many talented actors, singers, composers, directors or even Producers would not rot in the film industry. The case of the film ‘ Jai Santoshi Maa’-75 can be quoted in this connection. If it was not for Luck, how come a low budget film, made by a repeatedly failed producer Satram Rohra, became one of the top blockbusters of all time ? Surprisingly, after this movie, the next ventures of Satram Rohra were again failures. Though he was benefited by ‘ Jai Santoshi Maa’-75, neither the Music Director C. Arjun nor the film’s director Vijay Sharma got any benefit from the film. Probably they were not as lucky.
I do not want to dwell upon examples and a lengthy claim in favour of Luck, but let us not forget that many talented artistes, who showed great promise with their initial achievements failed inexplicably, later in their career. At least two examples can be quoted, of composer Ram Ganguly and singer Mubarak Begum (RIP).
Unfortunately, Ram Ganguly has no identity beyond his most famous film ” Aag”-48 ( his only 3rd film), making many people think that this was the only film that he did. Sometimes he is mistaken even for composer Ramlal (choudhari).
Born on 6-8-1916, Ram Ganguly soon achieved expertise in playing Violin, at the age of just 10 years. He was most appreciated when he played Violin at the All India Congress Party Session at Calcutta in 1933. Listening to his Violin, composer R C Boral offered him a job in New Theatres immediately. He remained 7 years in new Theatres. First he was assistant to Timir Baran for film Devdas, then assisted R C Boral and finally assisted Pankaj Mallick for film Dushman There he met Prithviraj Kapoor and they became friends. Following Kapoor, Ram too proceeded to Bombay. He started a Dance and Music school in Khandala,in 1946. In 1943, he joined Prithwi Theatres as a Music Director for stage dramas. His music for the famous drama “Deewar” in 1945 became popular. Raj Kapoor had first sung a song in that drama, for which HMV took out a record also- Hum babu naye nirale hain.
Ram’s first film as a film MD was Jayant Desai’s “Maharana Pratap”-46. He did one more film for Desai, “Maha Tulsi Vrinda”-47. When Raj Kapoor made his first film, “Aag”-48, selection of Ram Ganguly as its MD was natural, because Raj knew him very well from the Prithwi Days. Ram Ganguli took Tabla player Shanker and Harmonium player Jaikishen as his assistants, having known them earlier. Little did he know at that time that this pair would edge him out from Raj camp and establish themselves there. Ram Ganguli gave excellent songs for the film Aag-48, sung by Shamshad, Mukesh and Sailesh Mukherjee.
In Spite of his good performance, he was thrown out by Raj Kapoor from his next venture Barsaat, for 2 reasons. One – Ganguli being an old guard did not fit into the future plans of Raj kapoor, who wanted to innovate and bring in New ideas and Two, he was told that Ganguly was trying to use Barsat tunes for outside producers. While the first reason seems to be plausible, the second reason seems to be an excuse. God only knows the truth, but S-J were capable of anything- if one knows what they did in the coming years to win Awards and contracts.
In all, he gave music to just 14 films with 146 songs and 1 unreleased film. His films were Maharana Pratap-46, Mahatulsi Vrinda-47, Aag-48, Jalsa-48, Banvasi-48, Anmol moti-49, Ram Darshan-50,Deepak-51, Sangam-54, Gawaiya-54,(this film also saw the end of Surendra’s singing career), When Prithwiraj kapoor decided to make his famous drama Paisa-57 into a film, he called only Ram Ganguly. Originally, for the drama too he had been the MD. He gave good songs but they were not popular. Then came Ten o’clock-58 and then the next film was Saaya-61. His last film was Suhani Raat-74. In between, a film Postmaster-55 remained unreleased. Slowly Ram Ganguly was forgotten . He stopped getting films. No one came to him. Finally, frustrated, he left for Calcutta and died there sometime in 1983.
The cast of this film was Kamini Kaushal, Shekhar, K.N.Singh, Jeevan, Murad, Shashikala, Chaman Puri etc.etc.
We have enough information on Madan Puri and Amrish Puri, but not many people know much about Chaman Puri, their eldest brother.
Chaman Puri was born on 2-11-1914 at Nawanshahr in Punjab. Besides 3 younger brothers – Madan Puri, Amrish Puri and Harish Lal Puri, he had a sister Chandrakala Mehra. Kundan Lal Saigal was their cousin. With Saigal’s help, Chaman got a small role of a ” Munshi” in his film ” Street Singer”-1938. He tried his luck in the Punjabi film ” Pardesi Dhola”-1941, made by Talwar productions, Calcutta. However, finding not much scope in Punjabi films, he came to Bombay, where he found enough work in films starting with Raat Ki Rani-1949. He worked in 95 films in 50 years’ time i.e. till 1989. His last film was “Pyar ka pahla sawan”-1989.
Some of his well known films were Sangram-50, Afsana-51, Nadaan-51, Bahar-51, Shart-54. Aab E Hayat-55, Paying Guest-57, Howrah Bridge-58,Leader-64, The Train-70, Victoria-203 and others. He died on 26-6-1998. His one son Anoop Puri is an actor and one son Rohin Puri is a musician. He had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
The story of this film was….
Mangal is a very ambitious but poor person. He is always worried about the future of his only son Nandi- who is not very clever. He wanted Nandi to have a lot of wealth and happiness, but Nandi showed no talent of any type. Mangal hatched a plot and killed his employer Seth Jamnadas, by strangulating him. Then he took his small kid and threw him from above a hill. Providentially, the kid survived and was brought up by a good person. He is now called Badal, instead of his real name Sunder.
Here Mangal props up his son Nandi, as Sunder and they both start enjoying life. Years pass by. Badal grows up and falls in love with Kamini. Once by coincidence, by seeing his locket, she realises that Badal is Sunder- the real son of Seth Jamnadas. Kamini, with the help of police and some friends, collects proof and exposes Mangal and Nandi.
Mangal is arrested for his most amangal deeds and taken away by police, while Kamini and Sunder unite happily.
Today’s song is a good song by Shamshad Begum and Chorus. I thank Sudhirji for providing the song and uploading it for me.
