The box office success of ‘Dam Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015), a low budget film made under the banner of Yash Raj Films with Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya being the producer and writer-director respectively, paved the way for this combination to make another low budget film, ‘Sui Dhaaga’ (2018) for Yash Raj Films. The cast included Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles supported by Raghubir Yadav, Yamini Das, Sawan Tank, Manukirti Pahwa, Namit Das etc. The film was majorly shot in Chanderi (Madhya Pradesh) and around Delhi. Chanderi is famous for weaving silk, cotton and zari work. The film was released in theatres on September 28, 2018.
Sharat Katariya, the writer-director shared a trivia which became the inspiration for the film’s story. While waiting for someone in Delhi, he saw a tailor setting up his tailoring shop under the shades of a tree. He watched him for about 20 minutes that gave him a peripheral idea for the story. The inspiration for making this film also came from ‘Make in India’ policy launched by the Government of India in 2014. Incidentally, both Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma were signed as brand ambassadors for the Government programme, ‘Skill India Mission’ to impart vocational training to youths of India to become self-reliant. (Source: Business Standard, September 18, 2018).
Before the shooting of the film commenced, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma were told by the director that he has picked them for the film as actors and not stars. The underlying message was that both would face hardships during the shootings as a major part of the shooting would take place in a small town Chanderi. Both Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma were put under training with an expert tailor. They also spent few days with a weaving society in Chanderi and garment manufactring unit near Delhi to observe as to how the machine stitiching as well as the embroidery works are done. A workshop was also conducted between the main actors and the workers of garment manufacting unit.
The gist of the film’s story is as under:
The film’s story centres around a lower middle-class family with a married couple, Mamta (Anushka Sharma) and Mauji (Varun Dhawan). The family is in dire financial crunches due to retirement of Muaji’s father (Raghubir Yadav) and illness of the mother (Yamini Das). Mauji works in a shop selling sewing machines where he is often ridiculed by his boss. In disgust, he leaves his job and open a tailoring shop with the support of his wife, Mamta who is a good embroider. A friend, Yogesh (Mahesh Sharma) lends him his sewing machine. Their works attract the attention of the nearby hospital which entrusts them with stitching the patients’ uniforms. Jealous of their success in business, Yogesh takes back his sewing machine. After a few days of hardship, Mauji and Mamta get a free new sewing machine from the Government under the scheme for underprivileged.
The popularity of Mamta and Muaji’s hospital gown attracts the attention of the owner Harleen (Pooja Sarup) of a readymade garment company. She employs the couple in her company to stitch the hospital gowns under her company’s label. Harleen takes advantage of their simple nature and gets the rights over the couple’s stitching and embroidery designs. Mamta and Mauji feel cheated by Harleen and leave the company. After facing the numerous challenges, Mamta and Mauji start their own brand with the help of the local artisans. They participate in a prestigious annual fashion show under their brand name ‘Sui Dhaaga – Made in India’. The judges declare ‘Sui Dhaaga’ brand the winner.
The film ends with the montages of ‘Sui-Dhaaga’ brand being sold all over India and abroad. Mamta and Mauji also open a tailoring school for underprivileged ones to become self-reliant like them.
The film is motivational and it will give a feeling of pride and empowerment to the audience. With hard work and the unstinted support of the family members, the dreams can be turned into the realities. The film reminded me of the good old days of B R Chopra’s socially relevant films. YSR Films need to be congratulated for producing this film to inspire the underprivileged section of the society to become the self-reliant.
The performances of the lead actors, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma were excellent. Their unglamourous roles with equally unglamoruous locations lent authenticity to the characters they played. The film’s writer-director, Sharat Katariya ensured through his screenplay and narratives that the film does not take the shape of a documentary film.
The film has 5 songs written by Varun Grover which have been set to music by Anu Malik. All are situational songs in the film which are pleasant to ears. I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘tu hi aham tu hi waham’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Ronkini Gupta as a background song on the transition of Mauji and Mamta from a small tailoring shop to working for a garment manufacturing unit. The song starts with a pooja in the house as per the wishes of Mauji’s mother who is unwell. In the film, the song is partly shot, interpersed with dialogues. The Video clip has the seamless song by editing the dialogues. The audio clip has the full song.
The singer, Ronkini Gupta hails from Bengal and was born in Jamshedpur in 1984 to IIT Engineer-father and a teacher-mother. From the childhood, she was interested in music, dance and painting. The parents saw her interest in music and put under the tutelage of Pandit Chandrakant Apte of Gwalior Gharana when she was 7 years old. After about 10 years of training in Hindustani classical music which included further training from Ustad Dilshad Khan, she made up her mind that Khayal was her preferred genre of Hindustani classical music. Side by side, she completed her graduation and Sangeet Visharad from Gandharva Mahavidhlaya.
In 2004, Ronkini Gupta participated in SAREGAMAPA World Series in 2004 which she won for her Khayal rendition. In 2005, she composed two songs for the film, ‘Mr Yaa Miss’ (2005). Since 2013, she has been occasionally singing for Hindi films though her first preference is Hindustani classical singing in concerts. She is also a part of music band, ‘Khayal-e-Jazz Project’ in which she sings fusion songs of Hindustani classical music and the jazz music. The idea of this project, according to Ronkini Gupta, is to make Hindustani classical music more palatable to general public. She also wants to create new Hindustani classical bandishes in keeping with changed social environment. Despite all her activities, Hindustani classical music remains her main profession having done her concerts all over India and abroad. Hindustani Classical remains closest to her heart. She has been an extensive performer having done concerts, in India and Abroad.
Coming back to the song under discussion, it is in the form of a prayer to God in different menifestations.
He is ‘aham’ (reality). He is ‘waham’ (illusion).
He is ‘ghaat ke paani’ (water of river bank). He is ‘pyaas’ (thirst).
He is ‘chuppi’ (silent). He is ‘ardaas’ (in prayer).
He is ‘rang’ (colourful). He is ‘berang’ (colourless).
He is ‘shanka’ (doubt). He is ‘aastha’ (belief).
He is ‘door’ (far-off). He is ‘paas’ (near).
Despite these contradictions, the protagonist is optimistic and believes:
He is connected with us. He is a pathfinder for us even in the dark alley.
If He does not heed us, we will still keep faith in Him.
We will cross the mountain of religion. We shall attain Him.
It is one of the most beautiful prayers in the films of the recent times. Ronkini Gupta’s hummings and aalaaps in the song are mermerising to get pulled toward spirituality. The orchestration is minimal to give the space for lyrics and melody. When Ronkin Gupta sings the first antara, a soft flute is simultaneosly played as counter melody. Flute becomes a prominent instrument played in the second interlude along wth percussions. Incidentally, in this song, flute was played by Naveen Kumar who was once the part of the musical team of A R Rahman until he became a free-lancer. It is a pleasant surprise for me that this melodious song woven in sprituality has come from the baton of Anu Malik whose musical compositions have changed a lot during his second inning as the music director.

Felt like pointing out something- the person pulling the o
garment from Anushka Sharma & making her own designs etc(at 1.07 of the vdo) is Manukriti Pahwa daughter of actors Manoj Pahwa & Seema Bhargava (badki of Humlog) Pahwa. She married Pankaj Kapur & Supriya Pathak’s son Ruhaan this year.

At first I looked at the person, then replayed the vdo. Took a third look at her & felt she looked very familiar. Then I looked up the list of actors u have mentioned in the post. That is when I saw the surname Pahwa. And it dawned on me that she MAYBE Seema Bhargava Pahwa’s daughter. So then I googled to find that this was her Debut in films
