In the last 2 decades, I have preferred watching films that interest me on video sharing platforms or on OTT. ‘Talaash’ (2012) was one of few films I have watched in a multiplex upon its release after reading the ‘very good’ reviews of the film. And I was not disappointed. The film was a slow gainer on the box office front. Eventually, the film became a ‘semi hit’. Recently, I watched the film on OTT platform to recapitulate its story which I now feel is a complex one.

‘Talaash’ (2012) was jointly produced by Excel Entertainment and Amir Khan Productions and was directed by Reema Kagti. The cast included Amir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Nawazuddin Siddique, Sheeba Chaddha, Suhaas Ahuja, Subrat Dutta, Shernaz Patel, Vivan Batena etc. For Amir Khan, probably, this was his first film in the genre of suspense/mystery drama and also the first time he has been seen in the police inspector’s uniform.

Film’s director, Reema Kagti has been associated with Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar since the inception of Excel Entertainment, the film’s banner owned by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Reema has also worked on the script of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara’ (2011) with Zoya Akhtar and they have worked together on the script of ‘Talaash’ (2012) also. Incidentally, Reema Katgi worked as chief assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker in Amir Khan’s film, ‘Lagaan’ (2001). Excel Entertainment’s maiden film was ‘Dil Chaahata Hai’ (2001) in which Amir Khan as an actor, Farhan Khan as director and Ritesh Sidhwani as a producer came together for the first time. After a decade or so, the trios have joined together once again in ‘Talaash’ (2012).

‘Talaash’ (2012) is a suspense drama blended with psychological and supernatural themes. The film is aptly titled as apart from searching for his inner peace, the film’s protagonist has also to search for the cause of the accidental death of a film star. The story of the film is a long one because of its complexity.

The film’s protagonist, Inspector Surjan Singh (Amir Khan) and his wife, Roshni (Rani Mukherjee) having traumatised by the accidental loss of their only son, are trying to come out of their grief and are searching (talaash) for solution which is evading them. Their married life is in doldrum and the communication between the husband and wife is minimal. Being police inspector, Surjan is out of the house most of the nights.

In this milieu, Inspector Surjan is entrusted with a high-profile case of the accidental death of a Hindi film star, Armaan Kapoor (Vivan Bhatena) when his self-driven car veers from the road, breaks the parapet wall of Chaupaati beach and gets drowned in the Arabian Sea in the wee hours. From the CCTV footage, it was observed that there was no traffic and no pedestrians. Armaan Kapoor was not found drunk. It is, therefore, surprising as to why the car suddenly veered from road to fall into the sea. And this is the suspense of the film.

After the accidental death of his son, Inspector Surjan Singh has been suffering from insomnia. So, most of the time, he is on the night stroll with his assistant Inspector (Rajkumar Rao). With Armaan Kapoor’s case, he is searching for the clue for his accidental death. A vital information which he has got is that a bag containing a huge amount of cash in Armaan Kapoor’s car is missing. Why was Armaan Kapoor carrying such a high amount of cash?

While waiting in the car near the accident site in the night, Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) who is a prostitute, comes to Surjan’s car soliciting customer. With some conversations, Inspector Surjan feels that she can be of help to get some leads and she is ready to help him. Rosie virtually becomes a police informer. With further enquiries and with the help of Rosie, the case is moving towards the blackmailing of Armaan Kapoor’s friend, Sanjay (Suhas Ahuja) by a pimp, Shashi (Subrat Dutta) who is missing with a bag containing the cash. His friend, Taimur Langda (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) has seen him stuffing his bag with cash before leaving.

On the home front, Roshni gets a neighbourhood friend, Frenny (Shernaz Patel) who through some supernatural medium, convinces Roshni that her son can communicate with her mother through Frenny, and she writes what has been communicated. Roshni starts believing because her son talks in communications what is known only to her. However, Surjan Singh discourages her not to get into supernatural trap as their son is dead and he cannot communicate. In fact, he puts Roshni for some psychiatric counselling for her state of mind. But Roshni thinks that it is her husband who needs counselling more than her.

In the meanwhile, Shashi is shot dead by a criminal who has been hired by Sanjay. Taimur finds in Shashi’s house, apart from some cash, a DVD of CCTV footage showing Armaan Kapoor, Sanjay and the escort, Simran (Kareena Kapoor) traveling in a car which met with an accident about 3 years back during which Simran dies and left at the accident spot unattended. It is the same spot where Armaan Kapoor’s car met with an accident few days back. Now, it is clear that Shashi was blackmailing Armaan Kapoor and after his death, he was now blackmailing Sanjay for the death of Simran.

After the murder of Shashi, Taimur sees an opportunity to continue blackmailing Sanjay. After few days, Taimur is also killed by criminals hired by Sanjay. With the help of Rosie, Surjan gets a hint that the both the murders are the handiwork of Sanjay who was fed up with constant blackmailing. Surjan visits Sanjay’s house with a warrant and takes him to the police station. While driving, Surjan is using the same road to the police station where Armaan’s car had met with an accident. Surjan and Sanjay see Rosie standing ahead. In order to avoid colliding with Rosie, Surjan’s police van veers towards the beach and falls into the sea. Sanjay dies but Rosie saves Surjan.

It becomes clear from the CCTV footage that Simran was Rosie who came as a ghost of Simran. Surjan’s boss convinces him that with the death of Sanjay, the case of murder of Shashi and Taimur gets automatically closed. As to the accidental death of Armaan Kapoor, no one is going to believe Surjan’s version that he died due to some supernatural event by the presence of Rosie at the accident spot, who was the ghost of Simran. Finally, Sujan gives his official report that Armaan’s death was an accident.

Surjan returns home and finds a communication from his son written by Frenny in which the son says to his father that he should not feel guilty of his death, and he wants his father and mother happy. Surjan returns to the riverside place where he used to meet Rosie and uncovers Simaran’s remains where Shashi had hidden her body. He gives her a proper funeral so that her spirit does not return as Rosie. Roshni comes to the river side and consoles her husband.

‘Talaash’ (2012) had 5 songs written by Javed Akhtar and set to music by Ram Sampat. Born in Chembur, Mumbai, to a Tamilian father and a Kannadiga mother, Ram Sampat spent his childhood in the musical environment. His father had a keen interest in Carnatic music while his mother preferred Hindi film music, His grandfather, Professor T V Ramanujam was one of the three founders of Shanmukhananda Hall & Fine Arts, Mumbai and a patron of Carnatic music. Some of the great Carnatic vocalists and musicians like MS Subbulakshmi, Balamuralikrishna, Palghat Mani Iyer etc used to stay with his family while in Mumbai.

Ram Sampat learnt Carnatic music for 8 years followed by learning Hindustani classical music for 3 years as a vocalist. By the time he turned a teenager, he was clear that he wanted to become a composer. In Poddar College where he completed his B. Com, he was a part of rock band where he played keyboard.

Ram Sampat started his musical journey in advertising industry with composing jingles. His next progression was to compose non-film song albums, some of which became very popular like ‘Tanha Dil’ (2000). With this, he was noticed by Hindi film makers. ‘Khaaki’ (2004) was his first Hindi film as a music director which got him recognition. Another film which got him recognition as a music director was ‘Delhi Belly’ (2011). It was his association with Amir Khan’s TV serial. ‘Satyamev Jayate’ (2012) as a music director that worked in his favor to get the film ‘Talaash’ (2012). (Source: Ram Sampat’s interview published in The Times of India, June 12, 2013).

Ram Sampat has a music production house, ‘OmGrown Music’, in partnership with his wife, Sona Mohapatra, who is a well-known singer-composer. She has a degree in mechanical engineering and a MBA in marketing from Symbiosis, Pune. She started her career as a Brand Manager in a consumer goods company from where she got associated with the advertising industry. She left her job to fully concentrate on singing and music compositions. She is popular for her stage shows as an anchor and a singer.

Of the 5 songs of ‘Talaash’ (2012), I am presenting the first song from the film which is my favourite song, “Jiya Laage Na Tum Bin Mora’ rendered by Sona Mohapatra and Ravindra Upadhyay. The song is a good example of a fusion music in which the vocalists sing a thumri based semi-classical song accompanied by western orchestra, mainly drum and bass.

Javed Akhtar poetic lyrics brings out the state of minds Surjan (Amir Khan) and Roshni (Rani Mukherjee) are going through after the accidental death of their son. Both are trying to get out of the trauma, but unable to do so. While Sujan is fighting with his inner guilt feelings, blaming himself for the loss of his son, Roshni wants Surjan’s support to relieve her pain from the loss of her son. The first four lines of the song points that the solution lies within and so near but the protagonist is seeking solution elsewhere and far off.

Song-Jiya laage naa tum bin moraa (Talaash)(2012) Singers-Sona Mohapatra, Ravindra Upadhyay, Lyrics-Javed Akhtar, MD-Ram Sampat

Lyrics (based on audio clip):

mann tera jo rog hai. . .
mohe samajh na aa..aaye
paas hai jo sab chhod ke. . .
door ko paas bulaaye

jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora. . .

kyaa jaane kyun hai
kyaa jaane kaisi
andekhi si dor. . .
jo khenchti hai jo le chali hai
jo khenchti hai jo le chali hai
ab youn mujhe teri oar

ho o o main anjaani
hoon wo kahaani
hogi na jo poori. . .
ho o o main anjaani
hoon wo kahaani
hogi na jo poori
ho o o paas aaoge to paaoge
paas aaoge to paaoge
phir bhi hai ik doori
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora

jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora

mann ab tak jo boojh na paaya
tum wo paheli ho. . .
koi na jaane kya wo rahas hai
koi na jaane kya wo rahas hai
jiski saheli ho

ho o o main muskaaun
sabse chhupaaun
vyaakul hoon din rain
ho o o main muskaaun
sabse chhupaaun
vyaakul hoon din rain
ho o o kab se na aayi
nainon mein nindiya
kab se na aayi
nainon mein nindiya
mann mein na aaya chain
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
jiyaa laage na tum bin mora
