Today’s song is from the film Aan Baan-1956.

1956 was the year of the Silver Jubilee of the Talkie films. The ” Golden Era” of Hindi film music was on its peak and many memorable films were made in 1956. The Bangla version of Hindi film Jagte Raho had won the Grand Prix award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Other notable films were Nai Dilli (one of my favourite films),Ek hi raasta, Bhai Bhai from AVM, Chori-Chori- also from south, C.I.D., Hum sab chor hain ( another from my favourite’s list), Basant Bahar, Toofan aur Diya, Funtoosh, Hateemtai, Taksaal, Bandhan, Jaldeep, Rajhath and Inspector. The sensational court case of film Naya Daur-57 came up in court this year, in which Dilip Kumar openly expressed his love for Madhubala, in the court.

Film Aan Baan -1956 has been discussed here several times along with its many songs. One interesting fact was, however, never discussed. In the star cast of this film was the name of an artiste who had migrated to Pakistan after Partition, but came back to India looking for acting roles here again. However, Aan Baan was the only film which that artiste got and had to return to Pakistan again.

This was not the only instance when actors returned to India seeking film roles. After partition, millions of people went to Pakistan and millions came to India. There was a great shake up in the Hindi film industry as many Muslim artistes, Technicians as well as Directors, producers, Composers etc left India. Some of them revisited India in search of work again. Here are some stories about a few of them.

Meena Shorey, who visited Pakistan in 1956 to do a film, preferred to stay there only, leaving her husband Roop K. Shorey in India all alone. She revisited Bombay to do 4 films- Shri Nagad Narayan, Awara Shehzadi, Shrimati 420 and Chandu in 1958- her last film in India.

Noor Mohammad Charlie who went to Pakistan came back to India to do films in 1960 got only 3 films and after the film Akeli mat jaiyo-1963, he had to leave India as his Visa was not extended further.

Music Director Ghulam Haider, after migration kept on coming to India to complete his 3 films- Kaneez, Putli and Aabshaar-1953. He returned to Pakistan and died soon after.

Actress Ragini, once the most wanted actress in India went to Pakistan She came back and did 2 films here, namly Chamkee and Insaan, both in 1952.

After partition, the most well known and popular Muslim actors and directors wanted to migrate to Pakistan for good. Actor Dilip Kumar was keen on Migration to Pakistan. He first sent his younger brother Nasir khan to Pakistan. He acted as a Hero in Pakistan’s first ever film ” Teri Yaad’-1948 and later in film ” Shaheeda”-1949. Nasir Khan had to run away from Pakistan to India to save life. He was embroiled in a love affair with a married woman and was threatened for his life. Once he came back, he or Dilip Kumar did not dare to go to Pakistan for work.

Similarly Producer, Director Mehboob and Kardar also went to Pakistan. Following Partition in 1947, A. R. Kardar and his co-brother Mehboob Khan both left for Pakistan. However, according to Bunny Reuben, as quoted by Mihir Bose, they returned to India, but no reason was given for their return. Journalist and author of several books, Ambarish Mishra writes, ” when I asked Kardar about his Pakistan visit, he told me that after the Partition, Mehboob immediately went to Pakistan. He was disturbed with the news of Hindu-Muslim conflicts in Bombay Film Industry. It was said that Hindus will not allow Muslims in the film industry – which was totally wrong and only a rumour. He wanted to get an idea about his future in this new country. He was keen on settling there. After a month or so, I went there. Being from Lahore, I understood that the film conditions were not conducive for our growth there, as nothing was in order. Everything was in a mess there. I convinced Mehboob somehow and we both came back for good. I told him, as long as Nehru was there, they had no problems in India.” By coincidence, Nehru died and the next day Mehboob also died !

Coming back to the film Aan Baan-1956, one of the cast members was MAYA DEVI, about whom I was talking about. Maya Devi was from Bombay and started her career in silent films in 1928 with Anarkali by imperial. Her first Talkie film was Kunwari ya widhva-35. Her real name was Leela. She became a favourite of Bombay Talkies and she did 6 films with them in 37 and 38. In all she did 5 silent films and 31 Talkie films till 1949. Her last film in India was Raaz-49. She got married with a Muslim and then migrated to Pakistan.

Her husband divorced her in 1951, within two years of marriage. She came back to India to explore acting again. But she got only one film- Aan baan-1956. She returned and continued doing whatever roles she got there. She did 19 films in Pakistan and then retired.

Her first film in Pakistan was Phere-1949. She died in Lahore on 1-2-67. She did films in Gujarati and Punjabi also.

Today’s song is the last and final song of this film. With this song, all songs are covered and the film Aan baan-1956 gets YIPPEED !

Lyrics

o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
jeene nahin hai dete
tere jahaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale

sansaar mein yahi hai
bhagwaan raaj tera
bhagwaan raaj tera
tu kar chuka hai isko haq zulm ke hawaale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
jeene nahin hai dete
tere jahaan waale
o aasmaan waale

hoti thhi jinpe kurbaan
chanda ki chaandni bhi
hoti thhi jinpe kurbaan
chanda ki chaandni bhi
kadmon mein rul rahe hain
kyun aanbaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
jeene nahin hai dete
tere jahaan waale
o aasmaan waale

roti hui mohabbat
tujhko pukaarti hai
tujhko pukaarti hai
ek baar aa zameen par
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
jeene nahin hai dete
tere jahaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale ae ae
