Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990)

Today 27th June’2024 is the birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by posting some of the songs composed by him.

For the last few years I have been regularly listening to songs composed by R.D. Burman on radio or on playlist recorded in a pen-drive. It is always a pleasure to listen to the songs composed by Pancham as many RD Burman songs composed by him are my favourites. Listening to his well known songs as well as songs that I was not aware of is a new experience now. I during my growing up years may not have been able to discern the nuances of his music, including music created through unconventional ‘instruments’.

In one of my earlier posts here I had mentioned that “In the recent years I have observed for myself that I was enjoying the compositions of Pancham a lot and listening to them more attentively than before. I feel that there are many of RDB’s compositions especially which take you far away from this world. Some may make you nostalgic, while some of them transport you in time either reminding you of something which you have craved for or the happy or longing moments, & somber or introspecting moments of one’s life too.

For example songs like ‘zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam’, ‘tujhse naaraaz nahin zindagi’, ‘ae ree pawan dhhoondhhe kise tera man’ … and many more”…

I was then mainly thinking of the ‘philosophical category songs’ composed by him. I want to add it further that ‘fast paced’ or other ‘entertaining’ songs are equally pleasing to the senses. Re-visiting these songs and their foot-tapping music often motivates me and renews my enthusiasm. It is such a pleasant and energetic experience to listen to these songs. I am not mentioning any song as example here as they are many many and many … My journey of Pancham Songs is On and we have still a long way to go !!! Only 830 out of an estimated 1755 songs composed by R.D. Burman have been covered on the blog as of now.

While Pancham composed a lot of music he had also given his voice in more than fifty songs. All these songs which are of different moods are nice songs to listen to. A few of them, if not many, are iconic songs. So when I was thinking of this occasion I had a thought that I will present a Pancham song from a ‘debutant movie’, then a song picturised on Rajesh Khanna, a song where lyrics are written by Gulzar Saab, a song in Pancham’s voice and a song to mark a ‘Yippeeee’ for a ‘music by R.D. Burman’ movie. Till drafting of this article I have been able to score ‘three out of five’ so far 🙂 .

In this post we have a song sung by R.D. Burman and Asha Bhonsle. On screen Sunny Deol and Sridevi lip sync the song. This song is a typical ‘roothhnaa-manaana’ and ‘chhed-chhaad’ type song. It is from the movie ‘Joshilay’.

“Joshilay-1989” was directed by Sibte Hasan Rizvi for ‘New World Enterprises’. It had Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Satyen Kappu, Alok Nath, Prema Narayan, Rajesh Puri, Rama Vij, Bharat Bhushan and Master Jatin Khurana, Harjeet Walia, Hanif, Agarwal, Bhiku Verma, Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Hemant Mishra, K.L. Shetty, Deepak Kejriwal, Satish Kaushik, Kumud Tripathi, Ashok Sharma, Ami Asthana, Ravi Shastri, Mahendra, Arvind, Deep Dhillon. This movie introduced Rajesh Vivek as ‘Jogi Thakur’. Story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Javed Akhtar. Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu. Javed Akhtar also wrote the lyrics of the songs in this movie and music was composed by R.D. Burman. “Joshilay” or “Joshile” was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1989.

This movie has five songs as per details given below. (Though, the LP Vinyl cover of this movie mentions six soundtracks. It mentions the song ‘na jaa jaane jaa’ two times. While presenting the first song from this movie I had mentioned that this seems to be a multiple version song. But now it seems to be just one song. The video of the song is shorter than the audio version of this song. The lyrics given below are noted as per the audio (original sound track version of this song).

Let us now enjoy this song sung by Pancham and Asha Bhonsle and composed by Pancham.

Thanks for the post in remembrance of RD Burman.
I vaguely remember that ‘Joshilay’ was started with Shekhar Kapoor as the director. But due to some differences he withdrew
