5070 Post No. : 16991

In one of my earlier articles here, I had mentioned that the month of June is one of my most favorite months. There are several important days in this month and different anniversaries of our close ones too (including me 🙂 ).

Today 5th June is one such important day. It is the ‘World Environment Day’ today.

Here again I will repeat what I have mentioned in my post for the short song “Ye Hanste Huye Phool, Ye Mehka Hua Gulshan”  from film ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) written for ‘Environment Day – 2017’ and posted on the blog on 08.06.2017 (instead of 05.06.2017).

I am approaching today’s post in a different manner. Instead of going into the details of the environmental agencies, their history and purpose, the significant environmental issues being faced by humanity on this planet, etc. I am thinking of our Hindi films and their music. The nature is so intimately connected herein. We cannot imagine our Hindi Film Music without ‘connecting with nature.

Well, for today I would like to make a little correction in the above lines. That year 2017 the theme of the ‘WED (World Environment Day) was ‘Connecting with Nature’ and I had tried to connect the same with the songs, lyrics and music of our Hindi movies.

This year ‘2022’ the theme of the ‘WED’ is “Only One Earth – Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. So I would like to add here that I am thinking of those Hindi Films which carried a ‘message’ related to environment and our planet ‘the earth’. And since this is the blog of songs we need a song to connect this celebration today.

The movie of today ‘Aasmaan Se Gira’ (1991) has a message for all of us in its climax. Today’s song, though doesn’t exactly match the theme of today, it connects to the ‘philosophy of life’ and alerts us that ultimately our destination is ‘one’ and we have leave everything here. So let us leave everything in a good shape, better prospects, and in compassion to the humanity and nature.  Leave the ‘shad-ripus’ (kaam, krodh, lobh, moh, mad, matsar) to attain ‘moksh’. I have listened and watch this song several times and it is an enlightening song woven in comical situation in the movie. The movie also needs to be watched even though it’s a movie for children.

In today’s post I am not going into the details of this movie which I had mentioned in my earlier article with other song of this movie earlier on the blog – “Ghar Jaana Hai Mujhe, Ghar Jaana Hai“. A brief about this movie is given below.

A young prince is being trained for a time when he will grow up to become king. The lonely boy is frustrated at being kept secluded while being taught the art of statesmanship by great scholars. One day while frustrated he is crying for help ‘a strange little man’ arrives in his room.

This ‘little man’ is from another planet. His name is Trishanku. Trishanku was travelling to attend the wedding of his friend, but since the ‘rays of sorrow’ from the little prince caught him on the way he lands there to help the little prince.

The prince and Trishanku exchange views about their own worlds. Trishankhu is homesick and wishes to return back to his planet. He has his three friends from his planet who had earlier lost their way after coming to earth and then stayed back on the planet earth thereafter. Each one of the three knows the ‘part of the mantra’ that will allow Trishanku to go back to his home planet.

The two-escape trying to find ways for Trishankhu to go back. On their journey they develop a deep bonding and it is hard for Trishankhu to let go.

When Trishanku meets each of his three friends, each one gives him one part of the mantra which is presented in the form of a song and that is our song for today. It is picturised in three parts on Anil Kapoor, Sheeba, Sridevi, and Anupam Kher. The forth part of the song is picturised on Trishanku i.e. Raghuveer Yadav who is singing it at the ‘Jantar Mantar’ from where he is supposed to find his way to his planet after singing the ‘mantras’. In all the four parts of the song the little prince i.e. Master Abhishek is present in the picturisation of this song.

Finally Trishanku lands on his planet and he enters the ‘darbaar’ of his master (God of Outer Planet) i.e. ‘Baadshaah-e-Kahkashaan’ played by Amjad Khan. And, there we have the following conversation between ‘Baadshaah-e-Kahkashaan’ and Trishanku, where the master has a message for all on this ‘Planet – The Earth’.

Trishanku – takai t takai t takai t … main aa gaya ‘baadshaah-e-kahkashaan’,
                      andar aane ki ijaazat hai?

Baadshaah – aao … der lagaa di tumne, chuk gaye shaadi, yaad karte rahe sab

Trishanku – main kya karta, ve tinon itni door door thhe ek yahaan, doosra
wahaan , teesra jaane kahaan, badi mushqil huyi

Baadshaah – kya dekha tinon ne, pataa nahin … nahin laute… manaa kiya maine,
                       nahin maane
                       moorkh
                       bewaqoof
                       prithvi ke log
                      nahin samajhte
itni achchhi prithvi achaanak nahin bani… mehnat lagi.. koshish..
                      tum to thhe… yaad hain?

Trishanku –  haan yaad hain

Baadshaah – barbaad kar diya prithvi ko… tahas nahas… jung golaa barood
hathiyaar ladaayi … ped tod todkar nangaa kar diya prithvi ko
paani mein zehar … hawaa mein zehar …
mutthibhar log, hukumat karte karodon par
anaaj hain, bhookhe rehte hain laakhon… anaaj bechkar hathiyaar
                         kharidte hain
                         moorkh!  moorkh!!  moorkh!!!

Trishanku        theek kehte hain …lekin sabhi wahaan aise nahin hai …ek bachchaa hai
kautuk …main uski madad karna chaahtaa hoon

Baadshaah        nahin, nahin, nahin, hamaara kaanoon hai, rishta mat banana
prithvi ke logon ke saath… madad mat karna un murkhon ki
koshish ki thhi pehle kabhi, gayi bekaar… bhool jaao…bhool jaao o

Trishanku –      theek hai prithviwaale dusht hain, lobhi hain, moorkh hain …ek doosre ka khoon choosnewaale hain, ek jhande ke pichhe aapas mein lad mar jaate hain, anaaj bechkar hathiyaar kharidte hain,  lekin sabhi aise nahin hain..kautuk jaise log bhi hai wahaan, usne yahaan aane mein meri madad ki … main bhi uski madad karna chaahta haoon…

(After this Trishanku tells Baadshaah how good and friendly Kautuk is and what consequences he may be facing after being alone now.)

Kautuk wants to play , wants to fly kite, wants to eat mango.. but Maasheela is such a cruel queen who has prohibited everything for Kautuk and he cannot even go out of his palace… saying this Trishanku breaks into tears and Baadshaah surprisingly asks him what is flowing from his eyes and why. Trishanku explains him that this is the ‘gift’ he got from the ‘people of prithvi’.

Baadshaah orders to bring Maasheela to his darbaar. And when Maasheela (Kalpana Aiyer) threatens Baadshaah of his life, the Baadshaah wants to kill her but Kautuk intervene and request Baadshaah to forgive her and he begs him for her life.

Trishanku – dekha kitne zulm kiye hain is aurat ne is par, phir bhi ye uske praanon ki bheekh maang rahaa hai…ise kehte hain kshamaa, prem, kautuk jaise aur bhi log hain prithvi par, jab tak aise log hain hamen prithvi se naa-umeed nahin hona chahiye

(Maasheela hugs kautuk and is emotional. She asks kautuk to forgive her misdeeds. She showers her love on kautuk.)

This incident brings tears to the Baadshaah and he forgives all and with the following message…

jaao kautuk jaao… jab tak tum jaise log prithvi par rahenge …prithvi rahegi
jaao aur apne duniya ke logon ko samjhaa do…
aapsi prem khatm ho jaayega kuchh nahin bachega sab kuchh khatm ho jaayegaa

Kautuk returns to prithvi after taking a promise from Trishanku to visit him on his birthday every year.

This heart-warming film by popular TV and film director Pankaj Parashar stars a galaxy of Bollywood stars in guest appearances including Sridevi, Amjad Khan, Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher.

Before we enjoy today’s entertaining song I just wish that may there be many such movies and may such songs which I can present for occasions like today. We need to have more movies to bring the awareness on issues of environment and pollution.

Yesterday, it was there in the news that people are throwing dead animals into canals… Many must have seen the dumping sites where every day garbage heap is dumped and which are slowly turning into big mountains …

And last but not the least … keep watching children’s movies in between … not necessary that all children’s movies are for children only. People can learn a lot from them.

Also I would like to request the film-makers that ‘meaningful movies’ on the issues around us can be made for adult audiences too and they should not limit this for the children only.

It is good to see that in recent years there have been movies coming on ‘environmental issues’ too. We will keep presenting songs from such movies in the future on the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vashisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances. It was the story of Chandni Mathur a young effervescent young lady unsure of her emotions for two gentle men.

This was Yash Chopra’s return to his formula of love stories with good music, locales, and heavy dose of emotions and sentiments. It was very successful and also confirmed Sridevi’s position as a super actress.

It had songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Shiv-Hari. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Jolly Mukherjee, Nitin Mukesh, Vinod Rathod, Anupama Deshpande (the humming in the song ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh jhadi hain’), Asha Bhonsle, Babla etc. were the playback singers There is even a Kishore Kumar song in the movie which had 9 songs and the blog has 7 of these.

The above is what I had written on this date, last year, in the post remembering Sridevi. I must apologize for making a wrong statement in there- “Sorry there is no Kishore Kumar song in this film. The song which I thought was by Kishoreda was actually ‘bani tu meri mehbooba’ and it was in Vinod Rathod’s voice”.

Of the nine songs in the movie the following eight are already on the blog :-

Chaandni o meri chaandni 24 February 2021

I am not very happy with the month of February, it has been a sad month for the entertainment industry. We have lost entertainers, gems, legends who were part of our growing up years. First it was our darling Lata Mangeshkar, that news was followed by the news of another legend’s passing- Sandhya Mukherjee from Kolkatta. The newsprint on that news had not yet dried and we got news of Bappi Lahiri’s passing. I was just wondering what is happening and yesterday evening saw the news of another entertainer’s passing- K.P.A.C Lalitha. She was an all-rounder from Malayalam films, had appeared in one or two Tamil films too and was active for five decades- from 1969. I may have seen her work only post 1988 and that had prompted me to see any movie that she is present in. She was active till a month ago and has left many incomplete films behind her. She would have turned 75 in a weeks’ time.

Yesterday, SLBC played chupke-se-mile-pyaase-pyaase in its program ‘ek hi film se’ and I recalled how I first got to know of this wonderful blog of Atulji which I like to call ‘Blog of ours’. I remembered that it is a month short of 13 years of my association with “Atulsongaday” which I like to call Atuldom. I had written the following in my 400th/sup> post and it still holds true for me:-

Before we get on to the song I must thank Atulji for allowing us as contributors on his blog and posting my mail to him giving details of the song as my first post ever as lyrics- contributor. That prompted me to send a few more lyrics as farmaishes and then the writing bug bit me and the number of days between my posts have been steadily reducing.

I know my contributions are not masterpieces but my own thoughts and feelings. How I wish I had the patience of Sadanandji to write well-researched posts. Or the knowledge of Arunkumarji whom I call Guruji or even the resources (read HFGK) of people like Sudhirji, Avinashji etc. I must also mention the love of Nahmji’s love for poetry and poets and her posts have been enlightening.

With today’s song we have all songs of “Chaandni” on our blog. So, let us YYIIPPEEEE to it.

Missing the effervescent Sridevi.

Hullo Atuldom

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vasisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances.

The Kishore Kumar song has not yet been posted.

Today’s song is the surprise of the movie. I suppose this was the only song that Sridevi has sung in Hindi films. Of course, there is a song in Balu Mahendra directed “Sadma” where Sridevi’s voice was heard along with Kamal Haasan’s in the story-song ‘ek dafa ek jungle tha’ where she giggles and gives reaction to whatever Kamal was saying.

The song with this post is something which I have always wondered about. Whether it is a fantasy or flashback. I have seen this movie a number of times and I have not been able to decide. It has been shot in the picturesque Switzerland. It is one of the songs where the heroine is seen dressed environment appropriately. It also is a lesson for the lover to never meet his love without gifts.

We remember our beloved “khwaabon ki Shehzaadi” Sridevi who left us on 24th February 2018 today. She left her family, friends and countless fans shocked when the news broke over news channels in the wee hours of 25th. The general reaction was “it cannot be true”. How can a person who was so full of vitality and healthy and eagerly expecting her daughter’s first bow on the Bollywood firmament “just go!!!!” She herself just had had a release “Mom” and was seen at various award functions and TV channels. A lasting memory for me, personally, was from the TV dance reality show where she was seen shaking a leg with her contemporary Madhuri Dixit and it was a soothing sight for sore eyes. There have been posts on our blog which have her life-story, list of co-stars etc.
Thank you Sridevi for having entertained us through your life-time having started as a child-actor.

Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post is because of this song. This song reminded me how amused I used to be whenever I saw it.

Atulji has mentioned the starcast of “Tohfa”, the movie of which the above song is. He has mentioned that he felt the props comprising of saris was imaginative. If he had seen the movie he would have understood the reason for the ‘Sari’ prop. I am sure there will be some followers of the blog who have not seen the movie and definitely some followers would have seen. They will remember that in the scene preceding the song Jeetendra has gifted Jaya Prada a decent looking sari as he is appreciative of her way of taking care of his mother in his absence. She is in awe of him and when his mother asks her if she would like to be her daughter-in-law she fantasizes the song. Like I mentioned to my mother “ek saree mila toh itne saree khwaab mein aa gaye”; how typical!!!! (I had wanted to write all this in the comments that day, but reserved it for this post)

In all this Jeetendra has not been consulted by his mother (Urmila Bhatt). If she had, he would have told her that he was in love with another girl from the village. Now who is this other girl? She is Lalitha (Sridevi) who is also Janaki’s (Jaya Prada’s) sister. Janaki has been doing odd jobs around the village and helping out in households so that she can look after herself and her sister. Her only aim being that her sister should graduate and have a good life. Without knowing that Lalitha and Ram babu (Jeetendra) are already in love Janaki entrusts Rambabu with the responsibility of helping Lalitha with her studies. This gives them enough time to flirt and romance. One such meeting of Rambabu and Lalitha happens near a pond and he accidentally (may be on purpose too, don’t remember) kicks her Kalash (brass pot) into the water. The song that follows has numerous Kalash as prop. I am sure this idea was borrowed from the super-hit song of “Himmatwala” (1983).

Both these movies had many things in common.
(1) Music director was Bappi Lahiri. (2) Lyricist was Indeevar. (3) Hero was Jeetendra. (4) Both were made in South essentially as remakes of Telugu movies. (5) Both were directed by K. Raghavendra Rao: ‘Tohfa’ being a remake of his Telugu hit ‘Devatha’ released in 1982 & ‘Himmatwala’ remake of ‘Ooruki Monagadu’ a 1981 release. (6) Kadar Khan was the dialogue writer of both. (7) Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and S P Balasubramaniam were the playback singers.

The only thing that I would love to find out is who was the choreographer for the two movies. These movies had some unique dance steps almost equivalent of Aerobics. That may be an explanation of why Jeetendra looked so fit in those movies. 😉

A post about either ‘Himmatwala’ or ‘Tohfa’ or any of the few 10-15 movies of that period that were made with Jeetu by these South Indian makers will be incomplete without mentioning one more common factor- the trio of Kadar Khan- Shakti Kapoor- Asrani in the supporting cast. Jeetu used to say that he used to like working in the southern industry setup as they were very organized and punctual in their working. That may also be an explanation to why so many of Jeetu’s contemporary actors also tried their luck down south with positive results.

This discussion about the South Indian film industry is getting a bit too long and I am missing the purpose of this post.

As I was writing I made a discovery:- “Himmatwala” is yet to make a debut on the blog. I couldn’t believe it and made a call to Atulji to confirm. Now I am in a fix, which song to have with this post. The song from “Tohfa” which I have described or its inspiration from “Himmawala”. And both songs feature the birthday girl under discussion. She was beautiful in both.

So here is wishing the beautiful Sridevi (13 august 1963- 24 feb 2018) was with us and turned 56 on 13 August 2020. Let us think of her with this colourful song that made her the darling of the audience. The purists may have run down the songs of this period but we must admire the effort and imagination in erecting a set with pots and cart wheels. Also I admire Sridevi that she has danced barefoot in what must have been scorching hot sand.

hullo to all of Atuldom

Yesterday (13 august 2019) was the birth anniversary of our dear Sridevi, hailed as the first female superstar of Bollywood. I was not liking it that we had let it go without a post. Then last thing before I switched off for the day, I saw a song on some satellite channel and had my ‘eureka’ moment. I found a song from the later period of Sridevi’s career when she had started experimenting with the characters she played.

The song was from the 1997 Raj Kanwar directed and Boney Kapoor produced “Judaai”. The movie starred Sridevi alongside Urmila Matondkar and Anil Kapoor with Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever, Farida Jalal, Upasana Singh, Junior Mehmood, Paresh Rawal, Dinesh Hingoo, Saeed Jaffrey and two sweet child actors. Poonam Dhillon had a special appearance. The movie was a remake of a 1994 Telugu film “Shubhalagnam”.

It was a story of a lady Kajal (Sridevi) who gets her honest and loving husband (Anil Kapoor) married to his boss’s niece (Urmila) in exchange for money in her quest to become rich quickly. She gets this done much against her husband’s wishes and she faces social problems when she realises that it is not possible to remain your ex-husband’s legal wife after having divorced him and practically sold him to another lady. The film received mixed reviews for its simple and clichéd plot and execution. But the performances of the lead actresses were appreciated. This was Sridevi’s last film appearance before she took a sabbatical to lead a family life. Sridevi and Johnny Lever played the children of Kadar Khan and Farida Jalal.

Incidentally today happens to be the 62nd birthday of Johnny Lever. He was brought up as John Prakash Rao Janumala. He had to drop out of studies as his family faced financial problems and he pithed in by doing odd jobs including selling pens on the streets by mimicking Bollywood stars etc. At a program in his father’s plant (Hindustan Lever Limited) he mimicked some senior officers and the workers there gave him his stage name JOHNNY LEVER. He started out his career doing stage shows Kalyanji Anandji Nite, Tabassum Hit Parade etc which served as his launchpad. He has been entertaining the world since the 80s. His daughter Jamie is following in his footsteps and is a comedian-actor-singer. Here is wishing him a long and healthy life.

Todays’ song is sung by Bali Brahmabhatt, Alka Yagnik and Shankar Mahadevan. Nadeem Shravan are the music composers and Sameer was the lyricist. It is a party song that celebrates the birthday of Sridevi’s character’s daughter. We have Upasana Singh, Kadar Khan, Sridevi, Urmila and Anil Kapoor singing and Junior Mehmood is also there in the scene.

So, here is a song which sings the mind of most males of the species. I am not judging anybody. 🙂 my statement is based on all the husband-wife jokes that are constant on the various social media forums. 🙂

Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019): Song number 21

Hullo Atuldom

Happy Holi!

Some movies have a lot of memories attached to them. Yash Chopra’s “Chaandni” is one such movie. The year was 1989 and I had been to Mumbai (maayka) for my delivery. So, I had a lot of free time when I could interact with all my friends and neighbours like never before (and never have I had a similar opportunity too) 😉 that made that visit to Mumbai special. For those Atulites who know me- I had shifted out of Mumbai post marriage and so the term “visit to Mumbai”.

Getting back to “Chaandni” – those were the days when there were VCRs in many home and people used to rent Video Cassettes of movies which they couldn’t see in the theatres. I have seen a few movies in that way in the company of my neighbour’s family and more importantly their son. Their son was a year or two older to me so he was a mentor, guide, friend, idol and so many other things for me. To start off (as was the norm in those times) he was my Rakhi bro but we had a different equation between the two of us. He being my idol – I started liking Rekha- his favourite and he, on his part, made an effort to like Amitabh because he doted on me. Whatever love I have for physics, all branches of mathematics, and history is because I followed his way of studying them.

Oh, I again went away from Chaandni- so “Parinda” and “Chaandni” were the two movies the two of us saw back-to-back. “Chaandni” was a typical triangular love story. To start of it is a simple love story where the girl- Chaandni (Sridevi)- is wooed not-so-easily by the guy- Rohit (Rishi Kapoor). But the guys’ family has an issue with the alliance but accept it because their ‘only’ son is adamant. They go ahead have an engagement etc. But unfortunately, Rohit meets with an accident and is bound to a wheel chair. His family decides that this is the best time to humiliate the girl and so Rohit is forced to break-off the engagement so that the girl doesn’t have to face his family’s behaviour.

Now what does the girl do? She leaves Delhi, comes to Mumbai and lands a job in Lalit’s (Vinod Khanna) office. He is already pining for his dead wife when he falls in love with her, she takes some time to reciprocate though she is always civil to him and his mother. The next twist in the story comes when Lalit meets Rohit in Switzerland, where he has gone for business and Rohit has come for treatment. They become friends and decide that on returning to India they will introduce their respective girl friends and also marry on the same day etc. Isn’t that enough to twist the story further and make it a triangle?

As for the songs posted on the blog this date in 2009 – here they are

This will be the 7th song from “Chaandni” which had Shiv-Hari as music directors and Anand Bakshi as lyricist. I cannot keep myself from saying: Sridevi looks so pretty and baby-like in this song, actually she looks like a baby through the movie. This song is shot on the streets of Delhi or New Delhi. I would like it if the Dilliwale followers of the blog help in identifying the locations. It will be nice to know. 🙂

This song is also in memory of the aforementioned friend who loved to ape Rishi Kapoor and his sunglasses and sweaters. This friend was also a Dilliwala for a brief period of his life.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Same dates, last month, was a period of hectic activity. I believe pre-wedding period is the time when no one should check their BP. 🙂 I am often asked these days how does it feel after all the activity? Have you relaxed enough? Have you come to terms with the fact that your daughter is now married?

Phew!!! So many questions. Thinking of the last question- I don’t feel the difference; possibly because my daughter was already living away from home, due to her work, for almost 4 years now. She herself might answer like me. And to top it there is no custom of a “BIDAAI” in South Indian marriages, what we do is accompany the girl to her sasural and help her set-up home if she needs help in setting up. Also, in these modern ages when we are connected on an hourly basis through the various communication channels at our disposal, the feeling of the “daughter having got married” will never sink-in. The only complaint, well not exactly a complaint, is that after preparing for almost 4-5 months for the big day, it has come and gone and it is almost a month to the date.

Much like what students might feel at the end of their final year-end examinations!!! OH! Just realized the examinations for class 10 and 12 are about to begin in a week or two, for some it would have already started, ALL THE VERY BEST TO ALL THE STUDENTS their parents and teachers.

Now in the run-up to the wedding my husband had an idea that we should have some kind of entertainment for all those who come to attend the wedding. We were expecting many of our outstation friends and relatives on the previous day itself as the muhurta for the wedding was early and the guests might find it more convenient to reach the previous day, relax a bit and just have to wake up and get dressed for the big occasion. South Indian weddings are different from North Indian weddings in the sense there is no formal mehndi or sangeet attached with the rituals (South Indian weddings are rather staid). But we thought we might call a mehndi artist so that lady guests could have their hands adorned and there will be some pastime too where the grooms’ and bride’s family could mingle with each other.

Then there was also the bright idea to get the bright and talented kids and adults (who cared to join) to perform a song or dance which will further help kill time. We put our most enterprising and talented nieces and nephews on the job of hunting latent talent within the family and unanimously all of them decided that I should also, remove the dust cover and shake a leg or two. My only lament was that the dust cover was never removed and when I was called to do my ½ a minute thing on the stage I managed not to fall off it and also matched a few steps with my niece who had choreographed a rather simple number to one of the newer songs (which I had never heard of before the wedding eve.) I was happy we had a wonderful pre-wedding evening and no complained of boredom.

The whole dance and enjoyment reminded me of a song from the rather new (by the standards of this blog) movie “English Vinglish” (2012) which was directed by Gauri Shinde. The situation of the song was the wedding of Sridevi’s niece and the song shows the family practising some dance to be performed at the wedding. In fact, I had mentally practised a few steps to accompany the song if the DJ had played it (seems we only had to request, it was on his playlist) but we didn’t play it then. Since then it has been playing in my mind though. Then it struck me, as if a bolt from the blue, that we were close to Sridevi’s 1st death anniversary (its a year already!!!!! Time has flown really fast).

And so, here is the song which was Sridevi’s last dance number. There are no words to describe how beautiful she looked in that movie in the role of a homemaker whose husband and daughter keep pointing out her inability to speak in English. There are no words to describe how elegantly she carries herself in the saree and dance gracefully. Small wonder then, that people used to call her the only female superstar who could give all her co-actors a run for their money. In spite of this she was a much sought-after co-star who was comfortable and confident enough to be in the same frame as a Shivaji Ganesan, Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra, NTR, Rajkumar (of the south), or the actors of her age-group like Krishna (Telugu), Rajnikant, Kamal Hasan (Tamil), Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Mithun, Sunny Deol, etc. She was bold enough to refuse movies with Amitabh if her role in it lacked substance and Rajesh Khanna got help from her popularity in the period when he was trying to resurrect his career. And we don’t need to mention her movies with Jeetendra as they fall in a category of their own.

The song with this post is written by Swanand Kirkire and Amit Trivedi was the music director. We have Sunidhi Chauhan, Neelambari Kirkire, Natali DI Luccio, and Swanand Kirkire giving their voice to the song.
Thinking of our “Khwabon Ki Shehazaadi”.

Today (13th August 2018) would have been the 56th birthday celebration, or she would have completed 55 years of age. But that was not to be and we her fans lost her to an alleged “accidental death” on the 24th of February earlier this year. I know I don’t have to spell it out that I am speaking of Sridevi. I am sure it is a greater loss for her family – her daughters and husband. Specially when her daughter has just stepped into Bollywood and had her first release last month. And Jayaprada has put it beautifully in her tribute to her one-time co-star and supposed rival – like any mother Sri was anxious about her daughter’s debut film and audience-acceptance etc.

Instead of talking about how beautiful she was; how talented she was; and about her dances and supremely expressive eyes; or her comic timing, I want to go straight to today’s song. It is from her first ever Hindi release – ‘Solva Sawan’ (1979). It was directed by P Bharathiraja and is a remake of his Tamil original ’16 Vayathinile’, which translates to “at age 16”. The original was a commercial and critical success fetching a National award for S Janaki (playback) and Filmfare Awards for best actor (Kamalhaasan) and special award for Sridevi. Unfortunately, the movie failed in Hindi and nobody noticed the debut of Sridevi and she had to wait for four years to establish herself in Hindi films. And what a career from thereon. Infact she had six or seven releases in 1983 beginning with the extremely successful “Himmatwala” which revolutionised many things in the industry – song picturization, choreography, set decoration (songs with 100s of pots, sarees, chorus dancers etc) and music as a whole. We had songs like: “Ice Cream Khaaogi“; “Ek Aankh Maroon To Rasta Ruk Jaaye“; “Taaki O Taaki“; “Mama Mia Pom Pom” etc. to name a few of the songs that went on to become very popular – I am sure the purists who are reading this list are squirming 🙂 . I am sorry for putting all of them to discomfort but this was the route to Sridevi’s success in Hindi. What followed this wave of inane songs were sensible stuff like “Main Teri Dushman Dushman Tu Mera“; “Kaate Nahi Kat’te Yh Din Ye Raat“; “Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Choodiyan Hain“; “Tere Dil Mein Main Apne Armaan Rakh Doon“;what I am trying to point out is it was one inane song per movie at the most but they initially overshadowed her sensible stuff. But it was a fact that she was a darling of the masses from the time she stepped in front of the camera as a child.

Coming back to today’s song. It is a coming-of-age song where the heroine experiences pangs of love and is expressing it to whoever cares to listen – here it is the nature. And the white dress is supposed to indicate the purity of her feelings towards the veterinarian doctor (it was some actor called Madhukar, didn’t find any details about him on the net) who has arrived in the village and has managed to win her heart. The rest of the cast comprised of Amol Palekar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Dina Pathak. The song is written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music is by Jaidev. The singing voice is of Vani Jairam. Sridevi was actually only 16 when this movie was released.

[Ed Note: The censors certified this film in 1978, and the Geet Kosh carries it in the list of films from 1978. It was probably released in theatres few months later, in 1979.]

There are songs that run their course during their time and are then forgotten with time. Most of these songs that end up forgotten are unlikely to get a second look in future. But there are exceptions. Some interesting developments may rekindle interest in such songs among future generations as well.

The first such song that readily comes to my mind is the song “April Fool banaaya to unko gussa aaya” from “April Fool”(1964). This song was a reasonably popular song of its time which then got forgotten. It was in 1980s when “Andha Kaanoon”(1983) was released that the title song of “April Fool”(1964) caught the fancy of music lovers once again. In the movie “Andha Kanoon”(1983), inspector Durga Devi Singh (Hema Malini) is trying to secretly record the confession of her brother Vijay Kumar Singh (Rajnikant) how he killed the murderers of their father. But when she plays the recording then instead of the confession, this title song “April Fool banaaya” gets played, much to the cheer of movie watchers. Many movie watchers became aware of this “April Fool”(1964) song thanks to this scene of “Andha Kaanoon”(1983). Even I began to take a second look at this song only as a result of this scene of “Andha Kaanoon”(1983).

“April Fool”(1964) title song saw a revival thanks to a movie that was released two decades later. But sometimes songs can see revivals and renewed public interest in them because of reasons that have nothing to do with films !

Take the case of the “Nagina”(1986) song, Main teri dushman dushman tu mera. This song has suddenly become quite popular these days, not only among Indians, but even among non Indians. 🙂

The reasons are non filmy, and they have to do with cricket !

Yes, indeed it is a cricketing incident involving non India players that this “Nagina”(1986) song has become popular. More than the song, it is the picturisation of the song that has caught the fancy of cricket loving public.

Let me explain the situation for those who may not be aware of the cricketing incident. A three nation T20 cricket tournament involving India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is in progress at the moment, where every team plays its opponents twice. The two top teams then play the final.

In the first match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on Sunday 11 march 2018, Sri Lanka after batting first piled up a huge total of 214. Bangladesh, who were not expected to be able to overhaul the total batted spiritedly and emerged victorious, scoring the winning runs with two balls to spare. The hero of Bangladesh win was their diminutive batsman wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim who played a scintillating unbeaten knock of 72 from 35 balls to clinch a famous victory for his team. In an earlier T20 match in the past, he had celebrated prematurely thinking that his team had won, but his team ended up losing to India by one run in that match. Here Mushfiqur celebrated only after he hit the winning run. And how did he celebrate ? He did a “Naagin” dance, Sridevi style.

His “Naagin” dance celebration overshadowed even the victory of his team. Some criticised him for his immaturity, some supported him, some called for restraint, some ridiculed him. On social media, one found Mushfiqur getting trolled. On youtube, there were several videos in which his photo was superimposed over SriDevi’s in that “Main teri dushman” song.

I had watched this song and the movie in a movie hall during the time this movie was released in 1986. This song was popular but I did not take much notice of the song then. But this time, after 32 years, I took a second look at this song. For that I have to thank Mushfiqur Rahim of Bangladesh!

The fact that a Bangladeshi cricketer is aware of this song and he is in fact a fan of Sri devi’s Naagin dance movement is news to me. 🙂

In the second match between the same two opponents, Mushfiqur Rahim, after batting well for some time, threw his wicket away and this time the Sri Lankan bowler did a “sapera” dance movement, as Sapera played by Amrish Puri does in the song picturisation. So, even Sri Lankans were aware of this Hindi movie song ! The fact that the fans too were aware of it was proved when cameras showed a placard being carried by some fans showing a sketch of a sapera and a naagin. 🙂

Just imagine, a Hindi movie song of 1986 catching so much attention of non Indian cricketers. It is clear that these cricketers must have watched the movie, or at least the song picturisation.

With these two matches attracting the attention of cricket fans world wide, even non Asian cricket fans are bound to take notice of this “Naagin” song and some of them may get interested in this song. 🙂

The fact that foreign cricketers have begun to take interest in Indian movies, thanks to so many of them playing in IPL, is no secret. A few weeks ago, South African bowler Lungi Ngidi was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings in IPL auction. The bowler then tweeted

Just listened to the #LungiDance song loving it already.

The tweet was retweeted and liked thousands of time, mostly by Indians.

Foreign players are even getting interested in learning Hindi. On the eve of Deepaawali of 2017, India played New Zealand in an ODI match. New Zealand won the match, thanks to the batting of Ross Taylor of New Zealand. Sehwag tweeted:-

Well played @RossLTaylor Darji ji . Great effort after handling the pressure of Diwali orders .#indvsnz

— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 22, 2017

Guess what ! Look at the response of Ross Taylor:-

Thanks @virendersehwag bhai agli Baar Apna order time pe Bhej dena so Mai Apko agli Diwali ke pehle deliver kardunga ….happy Diwali

So one can say that foreign cricketers are getting interested in things Indian. This is because India is now emerging as an attractive destination for opportunities in many areas, including cricket. Foreign cricketers have begun to take lots of interest in India because of IPL. Forget active cricketers, even retired cricketers are getting involved in various capacities viz mentors, coaches, commentators etc. When it comes to commentary, opportunities are increasing. The TV channels have now started to offer commentary in Hindi and some other languages as well. So ex cricketers able to speak in these languages are in demand as commentators. Ex cricketers like Sehwag and V V S Laxman have emerged as a much sought after Hindi commentary jodi. Even Gavaskar, Ganguly, Murli Kartik etc do Hindi commentary. In the present tri series underway in Sri Lanka, I found Athar Ali Khan too being called up for Hindi commentary. He understands Hindi but cannot speak in it. Hopefully he will brush up in his Hindi speaking then he can find more commentary opportunities.

The movie “Nagina”(1986) was produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra. The movie had Rishi Kapoor, Sridevi, Amrish Puri, Komal, Prem Chopra, Sushma Seth, Pinchoo Kapoor, Viju Khote, Guddi Maruti, Lalita Kumari, Baby Guddo, Manmouji, Jagdeep, Satyadevi, Rajan, Sheetal, Suresh etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Nagina”(1986). This song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song is picturised as a naagin-sapera song on Sridevi, playing naagin, and Amrish Puri (playing sapera). Amrish Puri is assisted by many other saperas in the picturisation. 🙂

With this song, whose song picturisation has attracted so much attention in a couple of cricket matches played in 2018 between two international teams, “Nagina”(1986) makes its debut in the blog.
