Blog Day : 3470 Post No. : 13932

hullo Atuldom

The song with this post is a visual treat. It is a fun song. It is a song where-in the dancer/ artist is a choreographer’s delight. She follows all instructions and executes them fabulously. It is also a comic delight, the facial expression etc. It is from a 1987 movie which hitherto has only one song representing it on the blog. That song was posted on march 28th 2013 and was a contribution by Guruji alias encyclopaedia of the blog. .

Now today (17 january 2018) I am revisiting the movie because it happens to be the 73rd birthday of the script writer of this movie. This was the last movie for which he teamed up with his partner Salim Khan. He worked as a team with Salim Khan for a period of about twelve years and approx. 24 films. He is a Padmashri & Padma Bhushan, as well as a Sahitya Akademi and National Film award (5 times) winner. His father was an Urdu poet and lyricist in Bollywood. He was initially married to famous child star of the 60s- Honey Irani and later to another talented actress- Shabana Azmi. He is father to super talented children Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Today (17 january 2018) is the birthdate of Jaaved Akhtar – son of Jan Nisar Akhtar. In addition to being a script writer he also is a lyricist which first came into public knowledge when he wrote songs for Yash Chopra’s “Silsila”.

“Mr. India” was a fantasy film which is a favourite with children of all times. It was directed by Shekhar Kapoor and written by Salim- Jaaved. Sridevi showed she had comic talent specially in the scene where she parodies Charles Chaplin. The dozen odd children were a treat for sore eyes. Amrish Puri as Mogambo is considered to be one of the best villains of Bollywood history. And as for Anil Kapoor the movie showed he was more an actor -a lambi-race ka ghoda as the term goes in Hindustani. There are stories about how Salim-Javed read the story to the superstars Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and how they turned it down as they couldn’t relate to the concept of aninvisible man; but we will not think of that here.

Let us just sit back and enjoyyyyyyy this wonderful – comical- delightful song. I have heard in an interview by either the singer or the writer about how they wrote the lyrics of the initial part of the song. It seems they were sitting in a brain storming session- the director, music directors (Laxmi- Pyare), Kavitha Krishnamurthy etc etc. And each one gave a word or two, some sensible and some non-sensible. How else does one explain the words – hingsiki and why should I c Lucy, hassi tussi & lassi pisi follow each other and where did Hong Kong, King Kong, Ping Pong and Mombasa come from. But all-in-all a laugh riot.

Thank you, Jaaved Akhtar, and may we have more such songs from your pen.

Today, 13th August is the birthday of Sridevi, as she turns 54.

For this celebration, here is a wonderful dance song performed by her, from the film ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ (1984). The setting for the song is a stage performance, likely at a religious function. On stage, Sridevi is accompanied by Mithun Chaktravarty playing the flute and Beena signing the vocals. We also see Sudhir Dalvi, sitting next to Beena. In the audience we can see Yunus Parvez, sitting in the chair right up front, Sujeet Kumar and Kaanan Kaushal sitting  in the audience, Rakesh Roshan and Deven Verma, standing at the back, with Somayaajulu making an entry, while the program is in progress.

Hi everyone in Atuldom

Happy New Year 2017 to all

I was trying my level best to resist the urge to write out a song in memory of RDB- our very own Pancham. Not because I don’t like RD Burman, I know the whole world of Atulites know how much I love Pancham, just that I was too occupied with other things which needed a lot of my time. But then I remembered that I had selected a song and had wanted to send it across to Atul to be posted today (4 january 2017).

Today, the 27th of April, is the death anniversary of Feroz Khan.

It feels like only the other day that Feroz passed away – the memory (and shock) of that day is still fresh in my mind. But, when I checked the year just now, I see it was in 2009. So it’s already 6 years since Feroz left us. How time flies!

Hullo to atuldom

Today is the 76th birthday of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma of the Shiv-Hari duo. So on this occasion I was going through the list of movies for which the duo have given music and came across this song from Yash Chopra’s Chaandni (1989). And I thought bingo! Apt song for saluting the genius of Shiv- Hari and for the celebrations in our family that begins from tomorrow.

English Vinglish (2012) was a movie directed by Gauri Shinde. It was a sort of come back movie for Sridevi. Why I say comeback is because she was never out of sight. Prior to that she was seen in a few ads selling soap or some such thing. Also she was very much visible at various awards functions. But when I saw the promos for the movie I decided I had to see it come what may. And I was not disappointed. Mind you I will not say I am her greatest fan. It is just that I liked the theme on which it was based. It had no preaching to it. It was not a family drama in the traditional sense of the term. It talked about how a mother, whatever she does to please the family, is still considered secondary as she was not conversant in English. Then the movie proceeds to show that how half the world is not English conversant and how the other half treats them. Also what I liked about the movie is that the mother in law of the character played by Sridevi is very supportive of her in her endeavor of commercially showing off her skill of making laddoos. (I should say that she reminded me of my mom in law).
