Hullo Atuldom

Two Indian actors were born in 1938 one in Calcutta and another in Surat. Both had their first movies around 1960/61. But their first film together happened sometime in 1977/78. “Mukti” (1977) was perhaps the first time they acted together. I am speaking of Shashi Kapoor (18th March 1938) & Sanjeev Kumar (9th July 1938), post which they were seen in 9/10 movies, the last of which released in 1989. I discovered this movie just before I began writing this post. The print that is available online is not very good but it gives a fair idea of the film.

“Oonch Neech Beech” was a movie produced by Jagdish Varma and directed by Wasi Khan (never heard of these names). Music direction was by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza, Anjaan & Aziz Qaisi (another new name) were the lyricists. Nitin Mukesh, Kamlesh Awasthi, Suresh Wadkar, Mahendra Kapoor were the playback singers. Raageshwari (according to various online sites, the titles card of the movie was not very helpful) was the only female singer used.
I have already mentioned that Shashi Kapoor & Sanjeev Kumar were in the cast. Additionally there were two power house performers- Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. Then there were Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Nilu Phule, Sudhir, N.A. Ansari, Krishan Dhawan & Jagdish Raj playing important roles. The look that the cast sported in the movie was not like the way audiences were used to seeing them, specially the male in the cast. Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil carried looks that looked like extension of their realistic (meaning Art) films. The whole ambience of the film gave me a feeling that it was a long-in-the-making film. Readers may recall that Sanjeev Kumar had died in 1985 and Smita Patil in 1986. Possible that this may have been completed much before Sanjeev Kumar and Smita Patil died because the artists seem to have dubbed for themselves.

As for the storyline- Tulsi (Shabana Azmi) is a married woman who is deserted by her husband (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) at a railway station. Motilal (Shashi Kapoor) is the station master there and Hariram (Sanjeev Kumar) the coolie. These two try to help out Tulsi in her predicament, before Sumati (Smita Patil) enters the scene as Motilal’s wife. There is the usual misunderstanding between husband and wife as regards the relation that is between Tulsi and Motilal.
Here I would like to say that I am yet to see the full movie. I stopped seeing when I reached the song that we are having today. It is a multi-version song and I stopped seeing after the first version. Shashi Kapoor starts the song in Kamlesh Awasthi’s voice and Suresh Wadkar is playback for Sanjeev Kumar
Thinking of the cute actor of the Kapoor Khaandan today on his 5th anniversary. Shashi Kapoor passed away this date in 2017 (3 months before turning 80). He son Kunal Kapoor who had acted in afew films is essentially an Ad filmamker and daughter Sanjana who also featured in a some movies of the late 80s is now a theatre personality. Shashi Kapoor’s youngest son Karan Kapoor who began his journey as model for Bombay Dyeing etc is now into photography and settled in the UK.

P.S After writing the above post I finished seeing the movie. I found that the print that is available online has only one version of the song. Also the audio version on youtube is longer.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -9 (1989)
—————————————————————

Welcome all to this post covering Pancham’s music during the decade of eighties or 1981-1990.

This post comes after a long gap of almost five months.

In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1989.

Let us first take a look at the number of movies with music by R.D. Burman during the period from 1981 to 1988.

Sr.No. Year No. of movies with music by Pancham
01 1981 20
02 1982 15
03 1983 19
04 1984 17
05 1985 18
06 1986 07
07 1987 09
08 1988 06

In the year ‘1989’, six Hindi movies with music by R.D. Burman were released.

Here is the list of these movies.

Sno Movie Title Director Lyricist Date of Censor Certificate Status on the Blog
1 Aag Se Khelenge Bhaskar Shetty Anand Bakshi 30.08.1989
2 Bahuraani Manick Chatterjee Anjaan 18.12.1989
3 Dost K. Murali Mohan Rao Indeevar 23.06.1989
4 Joshile/Joshilay Sibte Hasan Rizvi Javed Akhtar 10.01.1989
5 Jurrat David Dhawan Anand Bakshi 12.12.1989 1 of 6 songs posted
6 Parindaa Vidhu Vinod Chopra Khursheed Hallauri 31.08.1989 4 of 7 songs posted

For today’s presentation I have selected a song from the movie ‘Joshilay’.

“Joshilay-1989” was directed by Sibte Hasan Rizvi for ‘New World Enterprises’. It had Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Satyen Kappu, Alok Nath, Prema Narayan, Rajesh Puri, Rama Vij, Bharat Bhushan and Master Jatin Khurana, Harjeet Walia, Hanif, Agarwal, Bhiku Verma, Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Hemant Mishra, K.L. Shetty, Deepak Kejriwal, Satish Kaushik, Kumud Tripathi, Ashok Sharma, Ami Asthana, Ravi Shastri, Mahendra, Arvind, Deep Dhillon.

This movie introduced Rajesh Vivek as ‘Jogi Thakur’.

Story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Javed Akhtar.

Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

Javed Akhtar also wrote the lyrics of the songs in this movie. As mentioned above music of this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.

“Joshilay” or “Joshile” was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1989.

This movie has five songs as per details given below. (Though, the LP Vinyl cover of this movie mentions the following six soundtracks. It mentions the song ‘na jaa jaane jaa’ two times, but it is not clear if these are two different versions.)

SNo Song Title Singer
01 Na jaa jaane jaa Asha Bhonsle, R.D. Burman
02 Dhar dham chak lag gayi Asha Bhonsle
03 Joshilay shahzaade hain Kishore Kumar
04 Dhak dhak jiyaa kare Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar
05 Dhola dhol manjira baaje re Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar
06 Na jaa jaane jaa Asha Bhonsle, R.D. Burman

As we can see in the above table Kishore Kumar, R.D. Burman, Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Usha Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie. (The title of the movies doesn’t mention the name of Suresh Wadkar in the list of singers for this movie.)

The story of the movie is based on the regular ‘dacoit destroying the family- then the revenge by the children who were orphaned then and later grow up with only one aim of taking revenge for their parents killings.

Shekhar Kapoor was supposed to direct the movie initially but it seems that he left the movie in between which was later taken over for direction by the producer Sibte Hasan Rizvi himself.

I have not yet watched this movie.

Let us now move to today’s song which I have selected for its music specially. The prelude music of this song would remind many the prelude music of ‘chunri sambhaal gori…’. Today’s song is based on the ‘folk song of Rajasthan’ ‘dhhola dhhol manjira baaje re’.

It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar and on screen it is lip-synced by Sridevi and Sunny Deol respectively. Also seen in the picturisation of this song is Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Sheshadri and many others.

Enjoy this ‘folk-musical’ from Pancham for the lovely music, singing by Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar, and Sridevi’s steps in this musical composition.

With today’s song ‘Joshilay-1989’ makes its debut on the blog…

Hullo to all friends

I know it is rather late in the day to wish a ‘Happy Friendship Day’; but as the saying goes ‘Better Late Than Never’.

This morning my husband had a confused look on his face when he started receiving Friendship Day messages. He asked me “when is this day?”. The reason behind the question was – he had received friendship day messages last weekend too, on July 30th to be exact.

My reply (after a lot of googling, need not be the accurate answer)- “July 30th was the International Friendship Day as recognized by the United Nations General Assemby in 2011.”
The next question followed “Then why I am getting messages today?”

My reply – “In India Friendship Day is celebrated on first Sunday of August for some decades now. Personally I don’t know when all this began”.

On thinking deeper, do we really need any of these special days? Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Sibling Day, Grandparents Day, Son’s Day, Daughter’s Day, Friendship Day etc. Aren’t these relations part of our emotional framework? I can only see one purpose to these days- acknowledging the existence of these relations in our life when we are fortunate of them being there. Because we miss our friends, parents, and all loved ones when they are not there and away from us for some reason or they have been permanently removed from our life. It is good to appreciate them when they are there and not take them for granted.

Different matter that cynics would say the purpose of these DAYS is to increase the workload of postmen & courier services, greeting card makers and shops selling relevant gifts, flowers and chocolates. (good for economy Emoji) But let us not be cynics.

The first set of best friends or Best Friends Forever (BFF)- as the new generation would put it- were Krishna- Sudama, Karna- Duryodhana (my thinking, I may be wrong too).

All of us have our set of friends who have stood by us through thick and thin, in our good times and bad times. The ‘Friend in need is a friend Indeed” type. We have friends with whom we just need to see or dial and start talking as if there was no gap in between, as if we have been meeting or speaking every single day of the year. Today is the day to acknowledge the importance of all the friends in our life.

Do we have special songs for this occasion in Hindi Films? Yes of course. Any song with the words ‘yaar’, ‘yaari’, ‘dost’, ‘dosti’, will fit the bill for friendship day song and the blog has all the iconic and all-time hit songs that are marked in the ‘Dosti song’ and ‘Friendship song’ category.

August 7th happens to be the birthday of Suresh Wadkar. So we are having a song for Friendship Day in the voice of Suresh Wadkar. It is written by Khurshid Hallauri and composed by RD Burman. It is from the 1989 Vinod Chopra directed ‘Parinda’ a movie whose songs I simply love. The blog has three (there is two-version song) songs from this movie.

Prakashchandra ji had put a query in the comments section of the first song of this film “And Who is Khurshid Hallauri ??, the lyricist, Any one who has information about him, Please share with us.”
This is Avinashji’s reply to that query

“Here is a brief information about Khurshid Hallauri compiled from sources:
Khurshid Hallauri was born in 10 Feb 1938 in Mumbai (?). He is an Indian lyricist writing primarily for Hindi songs in Bollywood films / Albums.
Hallaur or Hallor village is located in Domariyaganj Tehsil of Siddharthnagar district in Uttar Pradesh, India. Domariyaganj is the nearest town to Hallaur village.

There are many of his videos on ‘Youtube’. But I think in movies he has only penned songs for ‘Parinda-1989’.”

Any further information on Khurshid Hallauri is welcome.

The song is filmed on Anupam Kher and Anil Kapoor who are childhood friends and are on the way to meet each other after a gap of some years. When the two were away -Anupam Kher for police training and Anil Kapoor for studies. The second singer for this all male duet is Shailendra Singh.
Thanking all my friends for being in my life and wishing Suresh Wadkar on his birthday.

Hullo Atuldom

“Farz Ki Jung” (1989) was a movie produced by Dalwinder Sohal and directed by R.P. Swamy. It was written by Amrit Aryan and released on 17th March 1989. It had a cast of Shashi Kapoor, Dalwinder Sohal, Raza Murad, Amrish Puri, Gita Siddharth, Iftikhar, Anjana Mumtaz, Ashalata, Padma Khanna, Bob Christo, Satyen Kappu, Master Bhagwan, etc. It had Govinda and Neelam too. Music was by Bappi Lahiri and songs were written Naqsh Lyallpuri and Anjaan. Asha Bhonsle, Chandrani Mukherjee, Alisha Chinoy, Vijay Benedict, were the playback singers used. Plus a surprise singer.

The movie was a run-of -the mill story of an honest cop (Shashi kapoor) who is falsely charged with possession of drugs. His mother dies of shock. He is imprisoned and comes out of jail a changed man and becomes a criminal. The stage is now set for his younger brother (Dalwinder Sohal), who has been assigned the task of bringing the criminal to book.

I haven’t seen or heard anything about this film so I am not in a position to know what role Govinda has. But my interest was kindled when I read that this film has a song in the voice of the legendary Mohd. Rafi. (the surprise that I mentioned in a previous paragraph). Possibly it was the only highlight of this movie. I have also read that it was recorded sometime in 1980 for another movie (“Hari Bhari”, I think) which was shelved. That song found a life when it was used in this movie. Thus Govinda became the youngest actor on whom a Mohd. Rafi was filmed.

A few years back when I was looking to see if there was any song of Anil Kapoor sung by Mohd. Rafi (as Anil Kapoor had started his journey in films sometime in 1977, acting debut came in 1980). This song was the closest I could find. But Govinda seems to have been luckier than other debutants of that period- Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Kumar Gaurav, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff etc. I don’t even know the box-office fate of this film ‘Farz Ki Jung’ but let us not delve on that.

Today on the occasion of Rafisaab’s 42nd anniversary we are having this song. I am not attempting a biography of this singer, which Hindi film music lover doesn’t know about him; even the new generation cannot escape his magic -the song from “Fanney Khan” (2018) is an example. I am not even going to list out any of my favourite songs sung by the legend for fear making a long list and still not writing out all.

As Mohd. Rafi has sung in a song of his

“Tum mujhe yun bhula na paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gun gunaoge”

humming his songs and thinking of The Mohd. Rafi

Song-Phool ka shabaab kya husn e maahtaab kya (Farz Ki Jung)(1989) Singer-Rafi, MD-Bappi Lahiri

Today 24th July 2022 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of actor, producer, director, writer, and lyricist Manoj Kumar.
He was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami on 24th July 1937 in Abbottabad (then in North-West frontier province of British India and now in Pakistan).

Manoj Kumar has been one of the many favorites of us, those who have grown up in the years of ‘seventies’, or people like me who were born in end-sixties and grow up in the ‘1970s’.

We get to watch many of his old movies including black and white movies (e.g., ‘Woh Kaun Thhi’ etc), and the current movies released during the period till eighties and then nineties. Since Manoj Kumar’s movies were having good music and songs they were liked very much. And apart from that his movies had his ‘special touch’ in those which he directed, or he acted. Manoj Kumar has his special place in the history of Hindi Films.

Apart from being an actor Manoj Kumar has been a Director, Producer, Writer, Editor, and Lyricist too.

Today on his birth anniversary I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Santosh-1989’ which is penned by him only. Out of the seven songs this movie has Manoj Kumar had written lyrics for one song in this movie. (Remaining six songs were written by Santosh Anand).

‘Santosh-1989’ was an ‘East-n-West Movies’ presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan.
Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie.

It had Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others.

Story of ‘Santosh-1989’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by V.V. Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik).

As mentioned above this movie had seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song).
Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

The songs from this movie are good to listen and I have presented four songs from this movie earlier on the blog.

Following is the list of songs this movie had. Four of these seven songs have been posted on the blog earlier.

SNo Title of the Song Lyricist Singer/s Posted On the blog
01 Are logon tumhe kya hai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar 05.03.2022
02 Bataao tumhen pyaar kaise karoon Santosh Anand Nitin Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle 27.06.2022
03 Kahkahon ke liye Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor
4 Yoon lagne lagi aajkal zindagaani Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh 27.06.2018
05 Aaj main bechain hoon Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor, chorus 09.01.2022
06 Bansi waale ne gher lai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar
07 Tera allah beli Manoj Kumar Mahendra Kapoor, chorus

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Amjad Khan is lip-syncing the song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and the picturization shows that this song is happening in the jail premises where all the jail inmates are performing and the police officers also watching their performance (which should be a part of extracurricular activities I guess 😊). In the backdrop of the performance there is a plan to help Manoj Kumar to run away from the jail custody which he succeeds (by the time the song ends) however the Police Inspector finally comes to know of this, and he shoots Amjad Khan.

Let us now enjoy this song written by Manoj Kumar.

Today on his birth anniversary we wish Manoj Kumar a ‘very happy birthday’ and a healthy and peaceful life ahead …

5092 Post No. : 17020

We are in the fag-end of the month of June of this year 2022. As I had mentioned earlier that this month is a special for many of us due to the many anniversaries falling in this month i.e., anniversaries of relatives, friends and as well as anniversaries of many artists too. Today we celebrate birth anniversary of our beloved music genius Rahul Dev Burman, and one post has already been posted on the blog remembering Pancham.

Today 27th June, 2022 is also the seventy-second birth anniversary of singer Nitin Mukesh (born on 27th June, 1950). We wish him a very happy birthday today and also wish him a healthy and peaceful life ahead.

On this occasion I am once again going back to the songs from the movie ‘Santosh’ (1989). There is one duet sung by Nitin Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle in this movie which is yet to be posted on the blog. This song is lying ready with us since long and I take this opportunity to present it today here on the blog.

‘Santosh’ was an East-n-West Movies presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie. It has Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pichoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others. Story of ‘Santosh’ is written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by VV Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik).

This movie has seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song). Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I have earlier mentioned the details of the songs of this movie in my previous posts, so I am not going to repeat them again here.

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Nitin Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle and on screen it is lip-synced by Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini. This song is a nice duet to watch and listen.

Let us enjoy this beautiful song now …

Song – Bataao Tumhen Pyaar Kaise Karoon (Santosh) (1989) Singers – Asha Bhosle, Nitin Mukesh, Lyrics – Santosh Anand, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal

Lyrics

ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
bina bole hothon ka hilna hai kya
mujhe inka matlab to samjhaaiye
khayaalon mein phoolon ka khilna hai kya
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
mujhe ghut ke marne ki aadat nahin
bataao tumhe ae …

bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
mujhe pyaar karne ki aadat nahin
main jaisa bhi hoon
haan
jaisa bhi hoon
saamne hoon khadaa aa
mujhe kuchh chhupaane ki aadat nahin
bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
mujhe pyaar karne ki aadat nahin

ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
bina bole hothon ka hilna hai kya
mujhe inka matlab to samjhaaiye
khayaalon mein phoolon ka khilna hai kya
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
mujhe ghut ke marne ki aadat nahin

mujhe itni fursat mili hai kahaan
mujhe itni fursat mili hai kahaan
jo padhta tumhaare nayan ki ghazal
mujhe aaj lagta hai sach maan lo
ye chehra nahin hai gulaabi kamal
ye dil kaise chori kiya jaayega
ye dil kaise chori kiya jaayega
mujhe dil churaane ki aadat nahin

aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

mujhe kuchh huaa hai pataa hai tumhe
badi nam hawaa hai pataa hai tumhe
badan jal rahaa hai ragon mein magar
lahu jam gaya hai pataa hai tumhe*
lo sar jhuk gaya hai tumhe kya khabar
lo sar jhuk gaya hai tumhe kya khabar
mujhe sar jhukaane ki aadat nahin
main jaisa bhi hoon
haan

saamne hoon khadaa aa
mujhe kuchh chhupaane ki aadat nahin
bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
mujhe pyaar karne ki aadat nahin

Hullo Atuldom

Introducing “Tridev” (1989) on the blog with a song that was lost in the shadow of a more popular song of this movie. Both the songs have similar sounds at the beginning but the tune, the setting, words all are different. In fact “Tridev” had three songs that started with “oye oye”. Then the popular song went on as “Tirchhi topiwaale” and it had a version which was slower in tempo and can be labelled ‘sad version’. The song with this post went on as “gajar ne kiya hai ishaara” which was the song just before the climax. It had the three heroines doing a “jab tak hai jaan, jaane jahaan” kind of dance.

“Tridev” had Sonam-Naseeruddin Shah, Sangeeta Bijlani-Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit-Sunny Deol playing the romantic pairs; and Amrish Puri leading the pack of baddies Tej Sapru, Dan Dhanoa, Dalip Tahil, Rajesh Vivek, etc. Subbiraj, Anupam Kher played fathers of Sunny and Madhuri respectively. Then we also had Raza Murad, Sharat Saxena, Chandrashekhar (whose anniversary was on 16th June), Sulabha Deshpande, Tom Alter, Ram Mohan, etc in the supporting cast.

The movie was given an ‘Adults only’ certificate by the CBFC. It was produced by Gulshan Rai and directed by Rajiv Rai. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist of the songs which were tuned by Kalyanji- Anandji. Viju Shah was the arranger and if I am not wrong “Tirchhi Topiwaale” was his handiwork. Sapna Mukherjee, Sadhana Sargam, Alka Yagnik, Amit Kumar, Manhar Udhas, Mohd Aziz, were the playback singers used. Naseeruddin Shah’s voice was used in the titles along with a great musical piece. The same is used later in the movie too, towards the interval. “Tridev” was an out-n-out entertainer though I don’t know of its fate at the box-office, I have seen it on VCR back then and a few times later on Television too.

We are having this song today to celebrate the 90th birthday of ‘Bhujang’ (in Tridev) a.k.a ‘Balwant Rai’ a.k.a ‘Thakral’ and most famous as “MOGAMBO”. Now I can see the readers telling “Oh! Amrish Puri’s birth anniversary??!!” He would have been 90 this year. Thinking of this actor who could scare you, make you laugh as also look endearing in the role of a strict father as he says:- “Jaa Simran Jaa, Iss ladke se zyada koi aur tujhe pyaar nahi kar sakta”

Hullo Atuldom

“Maine Pyaar Kiya” (MPK 1989) was from the Rajshri Productions stable. It was directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, story by S.M.Ahale, and screenplay and dialogues were by Sooraj Barjatya. Asad Bhopali and Dev Kohli were the lyricists. Vijay Patil (a.k.a Raamlaxman) was the music director. Bhagyashree made her debut in this movie and it was Salman Khan’s first as a hero (he was present in “Biwi Ho To Aisi” in a supporting role before this). Aloknath, Rajeev Verma, Mohnish Behl, Reema Lagoo, Ajeet Vachani, Harish Patel, Huma Khan, Dilip Joshi, and Laxmikant Berde formed the supporting cast. There was a ‘homing pigeon’ too.
S.P.Balasubramaniam, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, and Sharda Sinha were the singers who sang the 10 songs in the movie. We have the following two songs from the movie on the blog

Song Dat of post Remarks
Kahe tose sajna ye tohri sajaniya 16 July 2013 (by Shekhar Gupta)
Antaakshari song 27 December 2013

Shekhar Gupta’s post gives us the story of the movie.

Asad Bhopali was born Asadullah Khan in Bhopal on July 10th, 1921 to Munshi Ahmad Khan. He was learned in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and English. AT 28 he moved to Mumbai to become a songwriter. That was the period of lyricists and songwriters of repute like D.N. Madhok, Prem Dhawan, Rajinder Krishan, Khumar Barabankavi, Jaan Nisar Akhtar etc. and Asad Bhopali managed to create an identity for himself.

Asad Bhopali has given songs which have been popular and can be heard on the radio and music systems regularly. Songs like ‘woh jab yaad aaye’; ‘kismat bigadi duniya badali’; ‘sau baar janam lenge’; the fun song in the late ’70s ‘ram dulaari maike gayi’. Today’s generation or those in their 30s currently will remember the songs of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (MPK) which was among the last movies that he wrote songs for. He passed away on June 9th, 1990. Thanking Asad Bhopali for today’s song and numerous others that he wrote for movies since his debut in 1949.

I have never seen MPK as a whole. Also I have not seen all the songs but the song with this post is one that no TV viewer or Radio listener can escape. It is in the voices of S P Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar but not a duet, its a multi version song. We cannot call the male version serious or sad but the female version is full of coy romance and is lip-synced by the dainty Bhagyashree Patwardan.

June 9th happens to be the birthday of a dear friend of Atuldom. I wish him a very Happy Birthday with this post. He is a person who is my inspiration in the sense that he learnt so many skills after retirement proving that there is no age-limit to learn anything new. He has no prejudices as regards the age of the music he listens to- meaning he is of the opinion there are good and bad songs/ music in all ages and times. He may not go out of his way seeking songs of new movies but appreciates good work when he sees it. He is generous in sharing his knowledge. He is among the few persons who I am comfortable in chatting with and can pick up the phone and start talking as if there is no gap in communication. The mornings of the WhatsApp group associated with the blog begin with his “GOOD MORNING” messages and we treasure the beautiful thoughts that come with it. (I am sorry if I am repeating everything that I said last year, but my feelings and thoughts remain the same)

We in Atuldom like to think of him as our IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA and I prefer addressing him as Guruji or Arunji. Yes!! today is our dear Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s birthday. All his posts are so well-researched that I am sure it is a big, time consuming activity for him considering that he also has his responsibilities of being a doting father and proud grandfather. May God give you all the energy needed to keep the posts coming in at a steady pace and awaiting your 1100th post soon.

Wish you A Very Happy Birthday Guruji!!! Hope the great musical times continue. 🙂

‘Santosh’ (1989) was an East-n-West Movies presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie. Story of ‘Santosh’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by VV Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik). Cinematography was done by Rajan Kinagi. The movie was passed by Censor board on 28.02.1989.

This movie has seven songs written by two lyricists. Santosh Anand wrote six songs and Manoj Kumar contributed one song. Following is the list of songs of this movie.

Sl. No. Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On the blog
01 Are Logon Tumhe Kya Hai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar

06 Bansi Waale Ne Gher Lai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar
07 Tera Allah Beli Manoj Kumar Mahendra Kapoor, chorus

So far as I remember this movie didn’t perform well at the box office then and even forgotten also. But this movie had some good songs, or in fact, all songs in this movie are good songs to listen. Music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Though I had not watched this movie then in 1989-90. I am not sure if it was released at all in theatres. I do not remember correctly now. I watched some part of it online in 2018. However, one song from this movie “Yoon Lagne Lagi Aajkal Zindagaani” was in my memory since long. And later one of my friends who also liked this song refreshed its memory. So, when I came into the contact with this blog, I shared this song and later represented it with a post here. Subsequently I listened to all the songs in this movie and liked them very much as they have a nice poetry content in them. I have all of them ready and noted with men since long. Another song from this movie “Aaj Main Bechain Hoon” was posted on the blog on 09.01.2022.

As mentioned above lyrics for as many as six songs in this movie were written by Santosh Anand. Today 5th March, 2022 is the birth anniversary of Santosh Anand (born on 5th March, 1940, some sources have mentioned the year of his birth wrongly as 1929 or 1939?).

Santosh Anand has written some of the memorable songs in Hindi Films. And he went on to receive appreciation as well as awards. However, in personal life destiny has not been so kind with him as he lost his son and daughter in law, and later due to bad economic condition he has to suffer a lot. Old age ailments and his deteriorating health condition have made his life difficult further. And that is how it happens with many around us, but life goes on …

Today I present the third song from this movie, which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and on screen Rakhee is lip-syncing and performing his song. We can also see Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Prem Chopra, and others in the picturization of this song. From the picturization of the song we can guess that Manoj Kumar and Rakhee are working at a construction site. The picturization is typical for a Manoj Kumar movie where the characters are going through lot of emotions.

When I had first shared this song to Atul ji, I had mentioned the following

THIS IS FOR THE RAKHEE fans, because I think even, they have forgotten this movie or the movie itself is a forgotten movie,

(Because on AVA ji’s post on Rakhi’s birthday – “Jab Tum Ho Mere Humsafar Khoobsurat” none of the commentors mentioned about this movie)

The song is a typical ‘Manoj Kumar’ type movie song. After ‘ROTI KAPADA Aur MAKAAN’ he tried to recreate that magic in every movie but failed. (and still luckily got ‘TWO’ women loving him in every movie),

Let us now listen to the song which is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the tune is a catchy one and the music is quite enjoyable and so are the lyrics by Santosh Anand.

akele dil tadapta hai ae
akele dil tadapta hai
ya main jaanu oo oo

kadar bulbul ke gaane ki
bhala saiyyaad kya jaane
jo aashiq hai samajhta hai

ya main jaanu ya wo jaane
arey logo
tumhen kya hai
ya main jaanu
ya wo jaane
ye kissa mera unka hai
ya main jaanu ya wo jaane

hamaare marne jeene ka
tumhen kyun fikr hai itna
hamen kis ore jaana hai
hamen kis ore jaana hai
ya main jaanu u u
ya wo jaane
hamaare haal par chhodo
arey chhodo ye hamdardi
tumhaare dil mein kya kya hai

ya main jaanu ya wo jaane ae
arey logo
tumhen kya hai
ya main jaanu
ya wo jaane
ye kissa mera unka hai
ya main jaanu ya wo jaane

hamaari apni marzi hai
tumhe kya lena dena hai
buraa kya hai
bhala kya hai
buraa kya hai
bhala kya hai
ya main jaanu ya wo jaane ae
asar hain pyaar mein itnaa
ke patthhar ban gaya ishwar
yun patthar mein rakha kya hai
patthar mein rakha kya hai
ya main jaanu ya wo jaane ae
are logon

tumhen kya hai
ya main jaanu
ya wo jaane
ye kissa mera unka hai
ya main jaanu ya wo jaane

Hullo Atuldom

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vashisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances. It was the story of Chandni Mathur a young effervescent young lady unsure of her emotions for two gentle men.

This was Yash Chopra’s return to his formula of love stories with good music, locales, and heavy dose of emotions and sentiments. It was very successful and also confirmed Sridevi’s position as a super actress.

It had songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Shiv-Hari. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Jolly Mukherjee, Nitin Mukesh, Vinod Rathod, Anupama Deshpande (the humming in the song ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh jhadi hain’), Asha Bhonsle, Babla etc. were the playback singers There is even a Kishore Kumar song in the movie which had 9 songs and the blog has 7 of these.

The above is what I had written on this date, last year, in the post remembering Sridevi. I must apologize for making a wrong statement in there- “Sorry there is no Kishore Kumar song in this film. The song which I thought was by Kishoreda was actually ‘bani tu meri mehbooba’ and it was in Vinod Rathod’s voice”.

Of the nine songs in the movie the following eight are already on the blog :-

Chaandni o meri chaandni 24 February 2021

I am not very happy with the month of February, it has been a sad month for the entertainment industry. We have lost entertainers, gems, legends who were part of our growing up years. First it was our darling Lata Mangeshkar, that news was followed by the news of another legend’s passing- Sandhya Mukherjee from Kolkatta. The newsprint on that news had not yet dried and we got news of Bappi Lahiri’s passing. I was just wondering what is happening and yesterday evening saw the news of another entertainer’s passing- K.P.A.C Lalitha. She was an all-rounder from Malayalam films, had appeared in one or two Tamil films too and was active for five decades- from 1969. I may have seen her work only post 1988 and that had prompted me to see any movie that she is present in. She was active till a month ago and has left many incomplete films behind her. She would have turned 75 in a weeks’ time.

Yesterday, SLBC played chupke-se-mile-pyaase-pyaase in its program ‘ek hi film se’ and I recalled how I first got to know of this wonderful blog of Atulji which I like to call ‘Blog of ours’. I remembered that it is a month short of 13 years of my association with “Atulsongaday” which I like to call Atuldom. I had written the following in my 400th/sup> post and it still holds true for me:-

Before we get on to the song I must thank Atulji for allowing us as contributors on his blog and posting my mail to him giving details of the song as my first post ever as lyrics- contributor. That prompted me to send a few more lyrics as farmaishes and then the writing bug bit me and the number of days between my posts have been steadily reducing.

I know my contributions are not masterpieces but my own thoughts and feelings. How I wish I had the patience of Sadanandji to write well-researched posts. Or the knowledge of Arunkumarji whom I call Guruji or even the resources (read HFGK) of people like Sudhirji, Avinashji etc. I must also mention the love of Nahmji’s love for poetry and poets and her posts have been enlightening.

With today’s song we have all songs of “Chaandni” on our blog. So, let us YYIIPPEEEE to it.

Missing the effervescent Sridevi.

Song-Aa meri jaan main tujhmein apni jaan rakh doon (Chaandni)(1989) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi MD-Shiv Hari

tere kadmon mein saara jahaan rakh doon
aa meri jaan
main tujh mein apni jaan rakh doon
aa meri jaan
main tujh mein apni jaan rakh doon
aa meri jaan
main tujh mein apni jaan rakh doon
