Today’s song is from the film Dharmveer-1937.
This film was released 6 years after the Talkie film started. Just before the advent of Talkie films, Parsi theatre and other drama companies were the only Entertainment sources. Parsi Theatre was famous and most successful because it travelled all over India to perform. They used special reserved Trains to carry people and sets, drapery etc for their company from kashmir to kanyakumari and Gujarat to Rangoon. The success of Parsi Theatre was attributed to Pt. Narayan Prasad Betaab, Pt. Radheshyam Kathavachak, Agha Hashra Kashmiri and Master Fida Hussain – called the four Pillars of Dramas.
The year 1937 was a year of Revolution for the newly started Talkie Film. Initially the films were mainly based on Folk tales, Parsi dramas and Mythological stories. 1937 was a year in which the Film industry was trying to drop its old skin and don a New Avtar. From this year, a variety of subjects were used to make films. If we briefly look at some path breaking, landmark films using Novel themes, we will understand how the film industry was attempting to change itself.
The newly established Minerva Movietone made a film on the importance and benefits of Celibacy in the film ‘Atma Tarang’.
Some artistes made their Debuts in 1937, like Ghulam Mohd.,MD for film Banke Sipahi, Comedian V H Desai in film Captain Kirti Kumar, Kishore Sahu in film Jeevan Prabhat, the eternal Mausi of Hindi films, Leela Mishra debuted in film Gangavataran. This was also a Debut film for Dadasaheb Phalke in making a Talkie film. David made his Debut in ‘Zambo-the ape man’.
Prakash films tried their hand at Stunt films with ‘ Challenge’ and ‘His Highness’, using Veterinary actors like Dogs, Horses and a Motorcycle. Prabhat’s iconic film ‘ Duniya Na Mane ‘ shook All India audiences with its story. Shanta Apte sang an English song in it. Bombay Talkies made its first and last Mythological film ‘Savitri’ with Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani.
Gangavataran was a film made by Dadasaheb Phalke. It was his First, the only and his last Talkie film too.
Imperial made India’s first indigenously made First colour film-Kisan Kanya. With this film, however, Master Nissar ended his ‘Hero’ ship as an actor.
‘Zambo – The Ape man ‘ became the first Tarzan type Indian talkie film, beginning a new Genre !
Maadon theatres Calcutta pulled its shutters down with their last Talkie film’ Zinda Bhoot ‘.
1937 was real path breaking for 2 solid reasons….
One, for the first time, Playback singing started in a Bombay film with ‘Mahageet ‘. The song was sung by Anil Biswas, its MD and it was filmed on Hiren Bose, in the role of a beggar, near a crematorium (Smashan Bhoomi), as per book ‘ Music without Boundaries’ by Dr. Ashok Ranade,pp183-186.
Secondly, for the first time, in an Indian film successful special effects were used in the film ” Khwaab ki Duniya ” -a film by Prakash Pictures, based on the popular novel “The Invisible Man” by H G Wells. A Hollywood film by the same name was made in 1933. The trick scenes in this Indian film were as good as the Hollywood film. Credit goes to Babubhai Mistri for creating the actions of an Invisible man , on the screen. He was nicknamed ” Kala Dhaga ” after this film.
Wadia Movietone made India’s first songless talkie film,’ Naujawan’, facing the ire of its audience for ‘cheating ‘ them ! This film is considered as the First film without songs. However, Bombay Talkies had released two short films, Mamata and Miya Bibi in 1936. Mamta was a songless film. So, technically, Mamta -1936 should be labelled the First Songless Film of India.
( Additional information – The next songless film was Munna-1954, then came Kanoon-1960. Other than these, the following have been songless films till 2000….Bhuvan Shome, Ittefaq, Uski Roti, Ashadh ka ek din, Ek adhuri kahani, Maya Darpan, Gupy Gyan, Trisandhya, Plot no.5, Saza e maut, Door wadiyon mein kahin, Ardh satya, Jano bhi do yaaro, Khandhar, Daamal, Kanoon kya karega, Ek ruka hua faisla, Khamosh, Naasur, Pushpak, Andha Yudha, Guru Dakshina, New Delhi, Salam Bombay, Sach. Salim langde pe mat ro, Nazar, Deeksha, Ek ghar, Pitaa, and Chup-1996.)
Film Dharmveer was made by Huns Pictures owned by Master Vinayak. Vinayak, V.Shantaram and Bhalji Pendharkar were all related to each other. They were the pioneers in bringing the wrong and bad traditions and misplaced faiths through their films. You will notice that almost all their films were made on this central theme. In today’s film also, Master Vinayak tried to bust the misplaced faith in antisocial ” Babas” and ” Holy men”. The story of the film Dharmveer-1937 was ….
Deenanath(Pendharkar) is a rich person in the city and he is known as a great social worker and philanthropist. He always projects himself as a helper of the poor and the needy. Also as a very pious and religious person. Actually, in his real life, he is a crook, hypocrite, cruel and immoral person. He always pretends to drink ‘Gangajal’ from his kamandalu, which in reality contains foreign whisky, and NOT Gangajal. Not only this,he has also killed his first wife,by poison, to claim her Insurance money. He swindles and uses simple women.
Jagdish (Vinayak) is an honest, simple youngster, who has failed in his matriculation exam 8 times. He works in a shop. He is in love with Kasturi(Ratnaprabha) who reciprocates his love. She sells flowers on the street.
Now Deenanath wants Kasturi for his pleasures and tries tricks with his henchman(Jawdekar). Jagdish and Kasturi, with the help of their friends, expose Deenanath and he is arrested by the police.
The people are happy with Jagdish that he becomes their hero and they take a procession with him. Jagdish gives them a long speech and warns them NOT to make another Deenanath. His feet are firmly on the ground and he is happy with Kasturi.
The director was Master Vinayak and the Music Director was Annasaheb Mainkar. His real name was Shankar Vinayak mainkar. It is a coincidence that the 3 persons in the film industry who were respectfully called “Annasaheb” were all Music Directors. The other two were K.Datta aka Datta Korgaonkar and C.Ramchandra aka Ramchandra Narhari Chitalkar.
The cast of the film was Master Vinayak, Baburao Pendharkar, Ratnaprabha, javdekar, Indira Wadkar, Nalini nagpurkar, Bhaurao datar and others. The name of Bhaurao Datar is unknown to today’s generation. Born on 14-1-1903 in Satara, Maharashtra, his name was Krishnaji Vishwanath Datar. he was an actor in Silent film era. His best role was that of Shivaji in the film ” Agryahun Sutka”-1929 ( freedom from Agra (jail) ). He and Lalita Pawar were the lead pair in many silent films. After working in a few Talkie films, at the age of 32 years, he left acting and became a Make up Artist. One of his achievements was that it was he who gave the “Sadhna Cut” to actress Sadhna for the film Love in Shimla-1960. He died on 15-9-1982.
Film Dharmveer was also famous for a Non-Filmi reason in Marathi Cinema. It was a bilingual film – in Marathi and Hindi. In the cast you must have noted that Indira Wadkar was one of the members. She was the maternal aunt ((मौसी) of actress Hansa Wadkar. Indira had a younger sister Sushila, who was not in the film line. Indira was trying hard to get her married to Master Vinayak. During the film shooting, the heroine Ratnaprabha and Vinayak were getting closer. Indira had noticed it. She cleverly manipulated matters in such a way that Vinayak started keeping away from Ratnaprabha and by the end of the film shootings of Dharmveer-1937, Master Vinayak and Sushila were married ! Baby Nanda was their 3rd child among the total 7 children.
Music director Annasaheb Mainkar’s assistant for this film was B.S.Hoogan, a Kashmiri from Punjab. Hwe himself was a Music Director, having given music to 18 films, composing 231 songs. In the film Meetha Zehar-1938, Naushad was Hoogan’s assistant. Actors like Nissar, Bibbo, Sheila and Naseem Bano sang for him.
Hoogan had only one son-Avtar Singh. In Bombay, Hoogan contracted Tuberculosis. He started treatment and on doctor’s advice, left for hometown Ferozpur, with family. Soon his illness took a serious turn and B.S.Hoogan died in Ferozepur in September 1938, at the age of 37 only. In another few months, his wife too died and his son was taken care of by his maternal Uncle. The son Avtar singh got a job in Railways at Chittaranjan, W.B. and he moved there. He converted to Christianity. He had a son David who also settled in W.B. only. After conversion his family in Ferozpur broke off all contact with them. His story ends thus.
Today’s song is sung by Ratnaprabha.
