Today’s song is from the film Manmani-1947.
The film was made by Patel productions. It was directed by Sarvottam Badami and the music was composed by the great one from Bengal – Kamal Dasgupta. Kamal Dasgupta earned fame when he composed many NFS in Hindi and Bengali in the mid 1930 and the 1940s. These became very popular, but somehow his Hindi film music was not that popular, except for the films Jawab-1942 and Hospital-1943, out of the 16 Hindi films for which he gave music. His best song for which he will always be remembered was ” Ye duniya Toofan mail” from the film Jawab-1942. Kamal Dasgupta could not impress with his other film songs in Hindi. 1947 was, in any case, a testing period due to the commotion prevailing in the film industry of Bombay which was affected the most.
In olden days, there were 3 major film centres-Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta. After 1947, all the Hindi film activity at Lahore shifted to Bombay. By mid 50’s even Calcutta almost stopped making Hindi films. Many Hindi speaking artistes in various disciplines of film making shifted to Bombay and finally Bombay became the only and the main Hindi film making Centre.
The year 1947 is a reminder not only for the Independence of India, but also for the upheaval that took place in the film industry that time. More than in any other industry in India, Muslims were plentiful, working in different sections and departments of the Hindi film industry. majority of them migrated to the newly formed Muslim Nation of Pakistan. This did create a lot of disturbance in the film industry. Right from the beginning of 1947, there were signs that soon the British would leave India – after dividing it into two Nations, India and Pakistan. When the month and date became known for the Partition, there was a great hurry among the filmmakers to complete their projects on hand and in process, compromising many factors like quality of the film, number of songs and such other things.
This resulted in the record number of films made in 1947 alone – 181 Hindi films and about 100 films in other languages in India. This was a record which remained unbroken till 1985, when 187 Hindi films were made. Thus from 1931 to 1985, this record remained unbroken for more than 50 years ! Obviously, this resulted in a big compromise on quality to achieve quantity with many films produced half heartedly. Most or rather many films made in 1947 remained obscure, unheard of and many flopped due to poor quality. Actually only few films were released in 1947, because many films were released in 1948 and 1949, with some films being released in Pakistan too.
Did you ever hear about films Amar Asha, Angoorbala, Attention, Barrister, But Tarash, Chalte Chalte, Chandrahas, Dagabaz Dost, Dehati,Ek kadam,Gaurav,Giribala, Heera, Intezar ke baad, Jhalak,Jurmana, Khaufnak aankhen, Lalaat, Mangalsutra, Moti, Sewa gram, Stage girl, Tohfa or Utho jago ? Of course not all films were below standards. Some of the landmark films were also made in 1947, like Shehnai, Mirza Sahiban, Jugnu, Saajan, Naatak, Meera, Elan,Aap ki sewa mein, Dard, Do Bhai, Neel Kamal or Parwana etc. However by and large the picture was like this only.
The film Manmani-1947 was just one of those films which failed to make any impact either with its music or its story, though I find the film story interesting and challenging. Most probably Ismail Arif Patel, who was the film Producer was in a hurry to migrate to Pakistan and so neglected the financial aspect, thus affecting the whole film. There were 10 songs in the film and singer Kalyani Das has sung 7 solos, 2 duets and 1 song was sung by Hemant Kumar.
Singer Kalyani Das was a case of “Same Name Confusion”, because another singer with the same name, Kalyani Bai (actual name Zarina) was operating in the same period. To add to the confusion Kalyani Bai had sung songs in 4 films made by Calcutta’s New Theatres in 1937, to start with her acting and singing and then she shifted to Bombay. Luckily, Kalyani Das started singing in Hindi films only in 1942 and she sang only in Calcutta made films and films for which Kamal Dasgupta had composed music. The confusion arose because both these singers were credited as Kalyani only.
Kalyani Das was a playback singer who started her career in Hindi films from Calcutta with PC Barua’s ‘Jawaab’ (1942) and ended her playback singing career in Hindi films with ‘Iran Ki Ek Raat’ (1949). She also sang for a few films made in Bombay. To the best of my knowledge, she did not act in any films.
It is not so difficult to segregate ‘Kalyanis’ as both of them worked in Calcutta at different times. Kalyani Bai worked in films produced in Calcutta up to 1937 whereas Kalyani Das commenced her playback singing career from Calcutta from 1942 onward. She mostly worked for music director Kamal Dasgupta (8 out of 11 Hindi films in which she was playback singer). She sang 37 songs in 11 films….Jawab-42, Meghdoot-45, Kurukshetra-45, Zameen Aasmaan-46, Prem ki Duniya-46, Bindiya-46, Manmaani-47, Giribala-47, Faisla-47, Swayamsidha-49 and Iran ki ek raat-49.
The cast of the film was Raagini, P.Jairaj, Sabita Devi, E. Billimorea etc. The story of the film, as given by our Sadanand Kamath ji in one of the song posts in 2014 was….
Manohar (Jairaj), a wealthy young man and Shashi (Sabita Devi), a young city girl are good friends. They argue about who is a bigger spendthrift, man or woman. Manohar decides to prove that it’s the female and for that he finds a young village girl Tara (Ragini), who he decides to use as an experiment. Tara resides in the village with her father, but agrees to go to the city With Manohar to get photographed.
In the city, she lives with Manohar and he starts grooming her into a perfect lady. She learns the ways and then decides to go to see her father in the village. Manohar has fallen in love with Tara but is unable to tell Shashi, who also loves him. When the villagers taunt Tara for staying alone with a young man in the city, she lets them know that she and Manohar are getting married. She returns to the city with her father only to find Manohar showing slides of the different stages of development in Tara’s grooming to a group of people. Misunderstandings arise only to be sorted out finally when Manohar explains.
Today’s song is sung by Kalyani Das and Hemant Kumar. Hemant Kumar was new to Hindi films. Note his raw voice, though he had already sung for quite a few Bengali films and NFS as well as some Hindi NFS. Let us enjoy this duet now….
