Blog Day :

5882 Post No. : 18466

This article is his 1400th contribution in the blog as a guest poster.

This is my 1400th post on this Blog. For me, it is like a big dream. I feel I will wake up and find that this figure was only a dream figure ! But looks like it is all real.

While I am glad for this new Milestone, it is still a mystery how it has happened. When I retired from my service in 1998 and later from all professional activities in 2010, I was thinking what to do now. Then one day I remembered about my old notebooks in which I had written about the old films which I saw in my younger days and I opened those Pandora’s boxes. A new world opened before me. I bought a Laptop and learnt how to operate it from my grandchildren, who seemed to be born with that knowledge ! I was 71 years old then.

Thus started my New life. The turning point came when I came across this Blog while surfing and I fell in Love with it. I started commenting on almost all old songs and provided information, not only here but also on some other Blogs and FB groups, Internet sites etc, who dealt with old films and music.

Atul ji prompted me to start writing for this Blog and my First post appeared here on 1-10-2012. Being a new field and a matter of my liking, my speed was amazing and the First 100 post milestone was achieved in just 192 days ! With the encouragement I was getting from the readers, there was no stopping then. My last Milestone of 1300 posts was achieved this year on 7-2-2024. From there to today’s Milestone I took just 199 days. It is the second shortest period !

In this journey of 12 years and 1400 posts here, I have followed 2 important principles. One is to always remember that I was not born with whatever knowledge I have in this field. I have gathered it from my notes, various books, magazines, newspapers, Internet sites etc. Therefore, if and when anyone asks for information, I give it freely and I do not expect any credit for it. These days, I find that on many Internet sites, Blogs and FB groups, my articles are used abundantly, without mentioning the source, but I do not mind it. I believe Knowledge increases by sharing it.

Secondly, I have always tried to be transparent in mentioning the source of my information in my articles. I feel it is my duty to give credit where it is due. In a few cases, the source is not indicated because either it was not noted by me or I simply missed it. There is, however, never an intention to hide the source or cheat by claiming it as my own information. Sometimes it happens and once I had a bitter experience about this from a most unexpected person.

In this journey, I had many experiences – mostly good but a few not so good. In addition to this Blog, my several articles are posted on Songs of yore.com, memsaabstory.com, anmol fankaar.com, harveypam.blogspot, geeta dutt.com, sangeet ke sitare.com, kalyan mitra mandal-FB, cineplot.com and few others. I have interviewed close relatives of yesteryear artists. The most valuable benefit I gained in this journey was, I got many like minded friends from the Internet and a group of dedicated ATULITES here. I consider this as my best reward than anything else.

Many people have helped me on my way to this position. Most of them have met me, yet some are so far off, God only knows if I will ever meet them. Among all these people, I am grateful to our leader ATUL JI, who not only initiated me into writing posts but also encouraged me from time to time. He has been writing lyrics of the songs in my posts and that’s a great help too. Dear Sudhir ji and other members of our ATULITES gang have been very kind and helpful. My thanks to all of them.

The film Mera Munna-1948 was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Vishram Bedekar and the music was by C. Ramchandra. During his early career, C.Ramchandra had joined Minerva Movietone as an assistant worker ( means all purpose servant) on a salary of Rs. 15 p.m. He served there for almost 3 years.

At Minerva, his first teacher was Bundu Khan as MD. Second was Habib Khan. Next was B.S.Hoogan. C Ramchandra learnt notation writing and use of western instruments for Indian ragas. After Hoogan, came Meer Sahib. He was truly a very knowledgeable musician and C Ramchandra learnt many things from him. Actually the training of Meer Sahib gave him the confidence that he too could give music and make tunes. During Meer Saheb’s tenure in Minerva, C Ramchandra became friendly with a young actor and director- Master Bhagwan. He was acting and directing a film ‘Bahadur Kissan’-38. Meer Sahib was the Music Director for this film. Most work was done by C Ramchandra, on behalf of Meer sahib. During this period Bhagwan and he became very good friends.

One day Bhagwan offered C Ramchandra an opportunity to give music to a Tamil film, which Bhagwan was to direct. C Ramchandra gladly did it. After doing one more Tamil film in Madras/Kerala, C Ramchandra got his first Hindi film ” Sukhi Jeevan”-42 as a music director-thanks to Master Bhagwan who was its director. This was the beginning of an eventful and illustrious career of C Ramchandra, who gave music in 112 films, composing 947 songs. He also sang 198 songs in 77 films during his career.

When Sohrab Modi sent a call to him to come for composing songs for one of his films, C Ramchandra remembered all this. While in Minerva, he knew Modi as a strict disciplinarian and a kind soul. In the subsequent period, C Ramchandra was impressed with the extraordinary success of Minerva movies like Pukar-39, Sikander-41 and Prithwi Vallabh-43. Afterall, his and Minerva’s careers had started together only ! Though he had become a famous and successful Music Director now with films like Shehnai, Saajan, Nadiya ke paar and Khidki etc amongst his 30 odd films, he went to meet Modi.

There was a tremendous change in circumstances when he left Minerva in 1938 and today when Minerva requested him to work for them in 1948. He had become so big that he could have easily refused to work for them, but he was not ungrateful. C Ramchandra has described this meeting to one of his author friends, Isak Mujawar thus…

” When I entered the office of Minerva, after 10 years, I realised that while I had grown in my stature, Minerva had lost some of its sheen and its place among the top studios. Whatever I had learned while working here had made my foundation so strong that I could never repay Minerva’s debt fully. As I entered, I saw the same tall, well built Sohrab Modi and by his side Mehtab was sitting next to him. As soon as I crossed the door, both of them stood up. I was embarrassed. I went ahead and touched his feet. He murmured something and hugged me. I did Namaste to Mehtab ji. Modi talked briefly about his film and their expectations about the music. Then with a little hesitation, he asked me my fees. I smiled and said, “Give me just One Rupee, sir. That’s my fee for Minerva”. However, they did not agree and a nominal token fee was fixed. I signed the contract “.

Those were the days when artistes gratefully acknowledged the help they received in their early careers !

The director Vishram Bedekar is not much known to many people who follow old Hindi films. Born as Vishwanath Chintamani Bedekar,on 13-8-1906 at Amravati,Maharashtra,he took the name Vishram, once he started writing. After graduation,he did his Post-graduation in English Literature from Nagpur university. He went to Poona in 1930 to do a Teaching job. Here he met his student cum future wife Balutai Khare…who was one of the First girls riding on Bicycles to college,in those days. They got married in 1938.She became Malati Bedekar,a famous Marathi writer later on. His first novel ” Ranangan” came out in 1939,while he was in the film business.

He started with Sangeet Natak company Balwant Sangeet Mandali as playwright-lyricist. Moved to film-making when the theatre group expanded its box-office draw by producing Krishnarjun Yuddha, starring the group’s writer-actor Chintamanrao Kolhatkar. Unlike other films produced by Sangeet Natak companies (e.g. Lalit Kaladarsh), the film succeeded commercially and he co-directed three more with the group’s owner-producer Vamanrao N. Bhatt. Scripted the mythological Pundalik (1936) and, according to his autobiography, co-d the film with V.N. Bhatt. Briefly studied film-making in the UK (1938); published his first novel, Ranangan (1938), on his return. Joined Prabhat briefly to write Shantaram’s Shejari/Padosi (1941), returning to the studio to script Ramshastri (1944, a re-edited version of which, credited to him, was later released as a children’s film entitled Ramshastri Ka Nyay) and to direct Guru Dutt’s début, Lakhrani. This was the first film in which Guru Dutt played a role and also did its Choreography. It was here that Guru Dutt met Dev Anand, who had joined Prabhat as an apprentice.

He made classic melodramas for Baburao Pendharkar’s New Huns, Baburao Pai’s Famous Pics and Minerva Movietone. Wrote Shantaram’s Amar Bhoopali (1951). Directed some of the Ramsay Brothers’ early productions (Rustom Sohrab, Ek Nannhi Munni Ladki Thi). Works in the modernist frame defined by K. Narayan Kale’s generation and G.B. Shaw; most of his literary and filmic work recasts stereotypes of pre-WW1 Marathi social reform novels into the declamatory style of prose melodrama with increasingly complex storylines. As playwright, works include Brahmakumari, Vaje Paool Apule and Tilak Ani Agarkar (1980). Also scripted his films. Published autobiography, Ek Jhaad Ani Don Pakshi (1985).

Vishram Bedekar divided his life and time between writing and films. He was a trained Cinematographer and Director from London in those days. He wrote several Dramas in marathi. After directing 28 films in Marathi and Hindi,he left films after doing Bharat ke shaeed-1972. In 1985 he wrote his autobiography in Marathi- एक झाड आणि दोन पक्षी-. He got the Sahitya Academy Award for this book. He is the only Film director with such laurels. Vishram Bedekar died in Pune on 30-10-1998,at the age of 92 years.

Today’s song is a typical “C.R. Type” song , sung by Lalita Deulkar ( who later married Sudhir Phadke in 1949 and in whose marriage, Mohd. Rafi sang the Marathi Mangalashtak, that is Marathi Marriage song). Let us enjoy this lovely song….

Sir jee, my heartiest congratulations on your 1400th post on the blog. Very appropriately the song accompanying the post mentions ‘pyaar kee pehlee subah suhaanee’ to for a ‘fresh guard’ for you. I liked the song too which has some interesting 🙂 lyrics.

Reading about C. Ramchandra always gives me inspiration. Thanks for the valuable information about Vishram Bedekar. Though I am familiar with his name, I think I had not read about him in details or may be I am forgetting it.

Once again wishing you good health and more time for the upcoming posts on the blog.

Congrats on your mile stone post.

Very commendable.

I am fortunate to have read many, many of your posts, known a lot many things about HFM and the various artistes who contributed in movie making & also to have met you in person.

It was nice to read about CR and how he was grateful to Minerva ,where in his initial years he picked up a lot many things from his seniors and ‘Gurus’ there
