Hullo Atuldom

Just discovered that Kumar Sanu is turning 67 (DoB 23 September 1958).

He has been around singing songs in Indian films since 1983. He first figured in a Bangladeshi film in 1986 whereas his first major Bollywood song was in “Hero Hiralal” (1988). He was born as Kedarnath Bhattacharya to Pasupati Bhattacharya who was a vocalist/ composer whose ancestral home was near Dhaka. The family moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata) in search of livelihood, where Kedarnath was born.

Kedarnath was introduced to the musical legends Kalyanji-Anandji in the late 1980s by Jagjit Singh (another legend). When Kedarnath started his career in the entertainment world he changed his name to Sanu Bhattacharya. On the suggestion of the legends Kalyanji-Anandji he switched to calling himself Kumar Sanu; a name by which he has become popular since. Anyways, he was a huge fan of the Kishore Kumar and so, being called “Kumar Sanu” was kind of getting closer to his idol (I suppose).

In his almost 40 year career he has collaborated with all the major music composers who have graced the Hindi Film Music world- Anu Malik, Nadeem Shravan, Himesh Reshmmiya, Jatin Lalit, etc. etc. & of course The Rahul Dev Burman & Kalyanji-Anandji.

For the idea behind this post, I must thank our Gajendraji, who introduced me to Radiomanpasand (a radio channel from down under). This channel played a whole hour of Kumar Sanu songs, giving me a huge library of songs to choose from.

The song with this post is from “Hero Hirlal” (1988) which was directed by Ketan Mehta & produced by Gul Anand. It had music by Laxmichand Virji Shah (better known as Babla). Songs were written by Hriday Lani (never heard this name before) but the internet says that he has been a writer, lyricist & actor. There were six songs in the film of which ‘sapnon ki duniya hai’ was a 2-version song. Amit Kumar, Kanchan, Mahendra Kapoor, Suresh Wadkar, Lata Mangeshkar & Kumar Sanu (who was credited as Sanu Bhattacharya) were the playback singers used.

Naseeruddin Shah, Kiran Kumar, Rohini Hattangadi, Saeed Jaffery, Satish Shah, Mohan Gokhale, were in the star-cast & Amitabh Bachchan was in a special appearance. Deepa Sahi & Sanjana Kapoor were the female lead.

The film was the story of Naseeruddin Shah (Hero Hiralal), a Hyderabadi auto-rickshaw driver who meets an upcoming Bollywood starlet, Roopa (Sanjana Kapoor) and becomes her tour guide. Soon, the two fall in love.

Work takes Roopa back to Bombay. Hero, pining for his lover, follows her and has an encounter with her family members, who clearly disapprove of him. Roopa’s family tells her to reject Hero’s love and move on with her career. Buckling under family pressure, Roopa is compelled to abandon her love, which causes Hero to fall into depression and attempt suicide. He is saved in time by Rani Sitara Devi, a show lady (Deepa Sahi), who arranges for him to die like a great lover in supposedly the greatest show on earth as directed by her. Hero is saved once again in the nick of time when Roopa arrives in a rush at the last minute to confess her love for him.”

Today’s stage song is the pre-climax song, which has Deepa Sahi waiting in the wings, Naseeruddin Shah breaking traffic rules to reach the venue on time and a smug Rohini Kattangadi & Kiran Kumar being very sure that the show will FLOP. The song has a bunch of dancers none of who lip-sync the song.

Song-Jashn hai mohabbat ka shaan se manaanaa (Hero Hiralal)(1988) Singer-Kumar Sanu, Lyrics-Hriday Lani, MD-Baabla

Lyrics

jashn hain mohabbat ka
shaan se manaana
kissa yeh pyaar ka
sabko sunaana
jashn hain mohabbat ka
shaan se manaana
kissa yeh pyaar ka
sabko sunaana
dard bhari daastaan hans hans ke gaana
aashiq ki maut hai
bhool nahin jaana
bhool nahin jaana

khel yeh ajeeb hai
sadiyon puraana
baar baar marta hai
aashiq deewaana
khel yeh ajeeb hai
sadiyon puraana
baar baar marta hai
aashiq deewaana
lekin yeh aashiq ajeebo-gareeb hai
apne hi haath likha
apna naseeb hai
apna naseeb hai

shamma ka kaam hai
jalna jalaana
parwaane ka kaam hai
marna mit jaana
shamma ka kaam hai
jalna jalaana
parwaane ka kaam hai
marna mit jaana
bandh liya hai isne
sar pe kafan
dekhne ki cheez
iske marne ka fun
marne ka fun
marne ka fun
hero hero hero
hero hero hero
