Today’s song is from the 86 year old film Brahmachari-1938.

The film was made by master Vinayak under the banner of his own short-lived film company “Huns Pictures”. During its existence of only 4 years, the company had given 10 memorable films. Though Vinayak’s films had a lot of demand, he had to close the company due to financial miscalculations which led to its being sold.

During the early years of Talkie films, making bilingual films was very much prevalent in Eastern and Western India. Two centres of prolific film making were Calcutta and Bombay, though Poona (due to Prabhat) and Kolhapur were also such centres. In the western India, films were made in Marathi and Hindi and in Calcutta it was Bengali and Hindi languages.

Between these two centres, Calcutta was better off in the financial gain and wider spread of their films. This was because, like a good businessman and having expert advisers, B.N.Sircar ensured that their films were distributed all over India. For this, he himself with his team, toured various circuits like Delhi, Lahore, Ahmedabad, Bombay, Poona and also in the South centres like Madras, Coimbatore, Vishakahapatnam, Bangalore etc. This ensured that films made by New Theatres were seen in all zones of India.

Marathi Film makers in Bombay/Poona and Kolhapur, not being business minded, did not make any such attempts and thus their film companies often remained short lived, whereas New Theatre of Calcutta was steady in this business. There were equally good artistic performers, good contents of the films, excellent writers, composers and actors on both sides, but western filmmakers, who made Marathi films, could not remain consistent. Additionally, Bombay being the biggest film making centre, directors, actors, composers etc from Marathi film companies had another avenue available for making careers i.e. Hindi films. This too was a minus point for Marathi Filmmakers, but a plus point for performers of Marathi films.

A case in point is that of Huns Pictures, floated by Master Vinayak. He was highly talented but in business he was not adept. Let us briefly look into his first major enterprise of running a film company.

In 1931, Imperial film company presented India’s first Talkie film Alam Ara and the entire film industry in India became excited. From 1931 to 1940 many new and old filmmakers tried their luck. There was a healthy competition. Prabhat, Ranjit, Saraswati, Bombay Talkies, New Theatres etc were very active and the Indian audience enjoyed every film with taste. In this atmosphere, Baburao Pendharkar (actor), Master Vinayak (Director and actor) and Pandurang Naik (ace Cinematographer) joined together and established Huns Pictures in March 1936. A princely capital of Rs. 15000 (fifteen thousand only) was provided by Sardar Chandulal Shah, without any mortgage, promissory note or interest.

Star authors of Marathi, P.K.Atre and V.S.Khandekar were taken in as writers. The first film of Huns Pictures was a bilingual in Marathi and Hindi called ” Chhaya”. It was a sad ending story and the film was completed within a month. It was released in July 1936 at Majestic cinema in Bombay. Though a tragedy film, it was quite successful and got critical acclaim too. The Calcutta Press Association gave it a ” Gohar Gold Medal”. The heroine Leela Chitnis became famous. Songs by Ratnaprabha like ” Raakhiya baand lo bhaiyya” became popular in the Hindi belt.

The second film was based on Ibsen’s ‘Pillar of society’ and was made as Dharmaveer-1937. It took six months to make and its budget wnet overhead. Next was Premveer-37 and Begunah-37. Premveer was a comedy and Begunah was a reformist film. Sohrab Modi liked the film and picked up Gajanan Jagirdar-its director- to Minerva. But the film was a flop at the box office. Meanwhile Chandra Mohan joined Huns, leaving Prabhat. Huns Picture’s next film was Jwala-1938. Lot of money was invested but the film was a flop. It broke the back of Huns Pictures.

To get out of the financial jumble, Huns made ‘Brahmachari-1938. It was released in September-1938, in Hindi and Marathi. Though the film was a hIt film, due to heavy loans, it had to be sold at a very low price of 1.10 lakhs only. Huns made ‘Devta’-1939 and ‘Brandy ki botal-1939’. In this film Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel is seen giving a speech on ‘Alcohol Ban’. He had come specially to the studio to shoot this. Due to one scene in the film, there was an agitation and the censors deleted the scene from the film Beandy ki Botal-1939.

‘Mera Huq’-1939 and ‘ Ghar ki rani-1940’ could not save Huns and it had to be sold for only Rs. 60,000, within its short life of just 4 years ! It made 8 bilingual (H/M) films, 1 Marathi and 1 Hindi film, a total of 10 films in 4 years. Due to mismanagement of finance and lack of business mentality, many such enterprises in Maharashtra had to be closed down. (Thanks to book ” Chanderi Smriti chitre ‘ by D.B.Samant )

Film ” Brahmachari’-1938 was a comedy film and was a great hit in both languages. The cast of the film was Vinayayak, Meenakshi, Salvi, Jog, Damuanna Malvankar and few others. The Vinayak-Meenakshi pair became very popular and they made several films together.

At this point, it is necessary to clarify a wrong notion which has been carried on for many decades, despite several clarifications. It is popularly believed that actress Baby Nanda was the daughter of Master Vinayak and Meenakshi Shirodkar. It is NOT true. She was the daughter of Vinayak and his wife Susheelabai (Wadkar- aunt of Hansa Wadkar). Meenakshi was already married before entering films. Many writers make this mistake. In my early writing years, even I have made this statement wrongly, in my comments.

The story of the film Brahmachari-1938 was ….

Bramhachari was the story of a simple young man Kanhaiyya( Master Vinayak-he was Audumbar in marathi version), who gets unduly sold on the foolish idea of a Lifelong celibacy( Aajanma Bramhacharya), espoused by a fake Acharya Chandiram(played by Damuanna Malvankar-Marathi’s leading comedy Hero. His daughter Bharati later married Hridaynath Mangeshkar)-who himself indulges in illicit relations and also by the speeches of a pseudo leader-Deshbhakta Jata shanker(played by Javdekar)-who himself indulges in hoarding, bribes and Black marketing.

One day Kishori(Meenakshi Shirodkar), the naughty young daughter of a Forest officer(V.G.Jog) visits the Ashram, along with her father. Here Kanhaiya is doing all odd jobs for the Acharya, like sweeping, washing etc. She falls in his love and tries to entice him with a seductive swim suit and a song in the swimming pool.

Over a period, with the help of Kishori, Kanhaiya realises his folly and exposes the fraud of Acharya Chandiram and politician Jata Shankar, who are arrested by the Police.

Today’s song is sung by Vishnupant Jog. Vishnupant Jog was born on 18-9-1905 at Bilaspur-M.P. He did his Matriculation in Nagpur, where his father was a Railway employee. Jog joined a stage drama company. After working in several companies including that of Deenanath Mangeshkar and Hirabai Badodekar, finally he joined films in 1935. After doing several small roles in Kolhapur films, Vinayak selected him for Brahmachari-1938. He was a good singer. He did a few more films with Vinayak.

Jog made a comic team with Damuanna Malvankar in Marathi films as ” Chimanrao and Gundyabhau(Jog)”. He was the Hero of the only film in Marathi ” Gajabhau”-1943. In this film, Lata Mangeshkar had sung her first Hindi film song. This song is available on this Blog, thanks to our dear Sudhir ji.

Jog acted in 75 Marathi and Hindi films (very few Hindi films, made by Huns Pictures). He retired in 1975. He was honoured with many awards. He died in Poona on 29-6-1993 (adapted from an article by Shashikant Kinikar, with thanks.).

Now enjoy this 86 year old song…..
