(Kishore Kumar’s 38th ‘Remembrance Day’ 13th October’2024)
Today 13th October’2024 is the 38th Remembrance Day of the legendary singer Kishore Kumar. He was born on 4th August’1929 and passed away at the age of fifty-eight only on 13th Octorber’1987. Today 13th October’2024 is Kishore Kumar’s 38th ‘Remembrance Day’. Thirty-seven years have passed since he left us.
Today we are paying our tributes to this great singer by listening and enjoying songs sung by him.
It was mentioned by me in the earlier post today that I would be presenting a few songs (if possible) sung by him on this occasion. I was specifically looking for some lesser-heard or never heard songs of Kishore Kumar from some un-released or obscure movies. In this post I am sharing a song from the 1960’s Un-released movie ‘Maa’. Two songs from this movie have been posted earlier on this blog. The first song, actually a gem of a song, has already been shared by our respected Kamath Sir on 13.05.2015 which is ‘main hansoo ke ispe roun hai ajeeb ye nazaaraa’ and the second song was shared by me on 04th August’2017 which is ‘yaaron manaao jashn e bahaaraa’.
The song ‘main hansoo ke ispe roun hai ajeeb ye nazaaraa’was the 900th song of Kishore Kumar on the blog. While presenting this post our Shri Sadanand Kamath jee had also mentioned about Kishore Kumar’s persona and his career in Hindi Film Industry. When I read this post again today I think it is appropriate to reproduce the following text from Sadanand jee’s post in this article here today to give readers a fresh read again.
“After reading a vast repository of information available on the internet as well as in the books, I am pretty certain about the personalities of Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhonsle etc. But I am not so sure about what sort of person Kishore Kumar was. He was branded as eccentric, unpredictable, money minded, stingy etc etc. In a rare interview conducted by Lata Mangeshkar about a couple of years before his death in 1987, he had revealed that he donned the mask of eccentricity and unpredictable behaviour just for those persons whom he disliked and did not wish to be associated with. But how can one explain his eccentric behaviour even with his elder brother Ashok Kumar and his family members whom he respected a lot? (In this context, there is a story narrated by Ashok Kumar’s daughter, Preeti Ganguly which I will skip here. (Those interested may read it here).
Kishore Kumar’s so called eccentric behaviour, I think, may have stemmed from the aftermath of the struggle he had to face in his early years in the Bombay film industry. He had come to Bombay to become a playback singer and his elder brother Ashok Kumar was discouraging him from becoming one. Instead he was persuading him to join Bombay Talkies as an actor and he hated to be an actor. Then, there were some persons in the film industry who passed their judgement that he had no personality like that of Ashok Kumar to become an actor nor had a good voice to become a playback singer. They all advised him to go back to his native place Khandwa.
While he could get some roles in films of Bombay talkies, it was S D Burman who gave him the chance to sing in the film ‘Aath Din’ (1946). Although he gave playback singing mainly for Dev Anand during his initial years of his singing, the stamp of actor-singer remained with him for a long time until he sang for Rajesh Khanna in ‘Aaradhana’ (1969). So, one can say that his cherished dream of becoming a playback singer was finally realised after being in the film industry for nearly 25 years. By mid 70s, Kishore Kumar had become the leading playback singer in HFM giving a tough competition to Mohammed Rafi.
Although, Kishore Kumar is known mostly for playful and teasing songs with his antiques if he is also singing on himself, his sad songs are heart touching. For instance listen to some sample songs like husn bhi hai udaas udaas, wo meri taraf yoon chale aa rahen hain, panthhee hoon main us pathh kaa and badi sooni sooni hai zindagi ye zindagi. On the occasion of covering of Kishore Kumar’s 900th song in the Blog, I present one of his rare sad songs ‘main hansoo ke ispe roun’ from an incomplete film MAA (1960s) which is stated to have been gone on the floor sometime in 1960. Not much information is available about the film except that the film had Kishore Kumar and Kumkum in lead roles. In one of the comments on the YT, three 78 rpm HMV records of the songs of this incomplete film bearing Nos. N. 55663-64-65 were released. I have a 78 rpm record of ‘Anokhee Raat’ (1969) bearing No. N.55688, which led me to believe that records of the songs from MAA were issued sometime in 1969. The same commentator on YT has mentioned Majrooh Sultanpuri as lyricist and Chitragupt as music director of this incomplete film.
Not much information about this movie is available in HFGK (Vol IV-1961-1970), except that it mentions the lyricist name as Majrooh Sultanpuri and composer Chitragupt with giving the title list of six songs for this movie. Geet Kosh also mentions the singers for this movie which are Usha Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. The banner for this movie is ‘Rangam’. The name of the director and cast of this movie is not mentioned altogether. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this film and its songs.
Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar accompanied by chorus. As mentioned above lyricist for today’s song is Majrooh Sultanpuri and composer is Chitragupt.
I thank the YT uploaders for this share. Let us now enjoy this song and remember Kishore Kumar the one and only one of his kind …
