Today’s song is from an obscure film Deep Jalta Rahe-1959.
I said ‘obscure film’ because no one remembers this film today. Actually this film was made by a well known banner like Filmistan, it was directed by a skilled director like Datta Dharmadhikari, music was by Roshan and the cast too had good actors. Still, the film remained a flop at the Box office. The reason was its story. The mid 50’s onwards the period was when the people looked at the films as entertainment with lilting music. This film had neither of these. Perhaps the makers forgot that films with a tragic end, separation of lovers and a weak story by current standards was not accepted by the audience.
Gone were the days of Saigal and Dilip kumar when the lead actor/actress died at the end, the lovers broke their hearts and the audience clapped and the films were successful. If you take a look at the variety of films made in 1959, you will know what was served to the audience.
While entertainers like Dil Deke Dekho, Anadi, Love marriage, Bazigar, Bank manager, Bhai behan, Chhoti behen, Black cat, C I D Girl, Chacha Zindabad, Chandrasena, Circus queen, Commander, Didi, Do Gunde, Do Ustaad, Dr. Z, Fashionable wife, Guest house, Jaal saaz, Kali topi laal rumaal, Kanhaiya, Paigham, Qaidi No.911, Satta Bazar, School master, Shararat, Heera Moti, Navrang, Do behnen, Mohar, Minister, Kangan, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Madame XYZ came to entertain people, some specialised films too were made. Historicals like Tipu Sultan and Samrat Prithwiraj Chauhan were made. As usual, mythology was there too.
V. Shantaram, after 5 years, once again tried his hand successfully at making a film based on Dancing. Navrang not only had excellent Dances, but C.Ramchandra created his magic- albeit sans Lata-this time with Asha Bhosale. Guru Dutt’s dream film “Kagaz ke Phool” was a failure, just like Raj Kapoor’s dream film “Mera Naam Joker” a few years hence. Both films were prestigious films for these ace film makers and they had staked their own for these movies. The failure of these movies at the box office shattered their makers to the core. But such is the fickleness of the Indian audience !
Bimal Roy had his special touch in Sujata and Hrishikesh Mukherjee equalled his mentor with Anadi. B R Chopra made Dhool ka Phool discussing premarital pregnancy and the upbringing of a Hindu baby by a kind Muslim family. ( This same theme was stretched to another level, by him, 2 years later with Dharmaputra-61).
Social issues were touched in Paigham( owner vs. workers), Heera Moti (farmer’s problems), Satta Bazar ( ills of gambling). Khwaja Ahmed Abbas showed his ‘never say die’ spirit by making “chaar dil char rahen”, which as expected flopped despite good cast. S Mukherjee, Usha Khanna and Shammi Kpoor weaved magic with Dil Deke Dekho, which became a trend setter for Nasir Hussain and directors of his ilk, in the coming years. Goonj Uthhi Shehnai had music by the old stalwart Vasant Desai who proved to be as good as new !
The cast of the film was Abhi Bhattacharya, Randhir, Manju, Ranjana, Savita Chaterjee, Badri Pershad, Vithaldas Panchotiya and others. The story of the film was…..
DEEP JALTA RAHE-1959 was a Filmistan production, directed by Datta Dharmadhikari-a director-producer of fame in Marathi and Hindi film world.
The music was by Roshan and Lyrics were by Shailendra nad Rahil Gorakhpuri.Originally, the film was released with only 3 songs, but later 3 more songs were added to it.The above song is from the original songs.
The story and screenplay was by Madhusudan Kalelkar, a noted Marathi Dramatist and a writer of repute. He had written screenplays for many Hindi films. The dialogues were by Sarashar Sailani-whose real name was Bheemsen.
Dhanraj (Badriprashad),the Zamindar of Dhanpur had 2 sons.Jeevan(Randhir) who was his real son and Ashok(Abhi Bhattacharya) was an adopted child. Ashok was very good natured, cultured and obedient, whereas Jeevan was very arrogant and a spoiled boy. Dhanraj loved Ashok, which irritated Jeevan and he hated Ashok. Ashok loved Mala(Manju) and they wanted to get married. Ashok passed with merit and Dhanraj sent him to London for higher studies. Now Jeevan was alone and so started behaving uncontrolled. Seeing this and after an altercation with Jeevan, Dhanraj dies. Jeevan starts troubling Manju for marrying him. Ashok did not know anything. He sends a letter that he needed 5000 rupees for eye treatment lest he will become blind. With this letter Jeevan blackmails Mala to marry him. To save Ashok’s eyes she marries Jeevan, who illtreats her.
When Ashok returns, he is a pauper now and Mala is also married to Jeevan. He goes away to Bombay to earn money. He comes to know that Dhanraj haveli is getting auctioned. He comes and buys the Haveli. Mala dies in his presence and hands over her son Raju to him.
Now Jeevan starts blackmailing Ashok for money, threatening to take away Raju, whom Ashok loves very much.
The rest of the story details how Jeevan is involved in a murder case and is jailed for life.He repents before going to jail and requests Ashok to never tell Raju that his father was Jeevan.
The end of the 50’s decade to the first half of the 60’s decade was also a period when the last of the ‘roll over’ actors from the silent era and the early Talkie era were seen last. That way very few had stayed put upto these times but still, whoever lasted was not in a good shape. Two such artistes were in this film. One was Vithaldas Panchotiya.
Vithalda Panchotiya was born in Vadnagar, Gujarat, in the month of October 1906.His father was working in Drama companies. Acting was in his blood. At the age of 8 years,he worked for Mohanlal company and then with Alfred Theatrical company travelled all over India, doing and learning every job. While in Calcutta he joined Madan Theatres in 1920,working as anything and everything. Soon he was acting and directing films on his own. From 1924 to 1931, he directed and also acted in 12 silent films like, Parikshit, Kamsin Lilavati, Rana Garjana, Kaya palat, Naseeb ni Nakhara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Rang Rekha, Gaibi Sawar, Pavitra Pyar, Shoorveer Sharada, Veer Vijay Singh and Sakhi lutera. In these films he acted and directed and the story, dialogues and screenplay were also written by him. He made these films for Sharada and Kohinoor United film companies. He acted in his first Talkie film- in Madan theatre’s Hindustan-1932. In the same year he made a comedy film ” Muflis Aashiq”, in which he not only acted, sang and directed but also composed the music.
He was a staunch Gandhi follower. His patriotic activities continued side by side. From 1931 to 1940, he remained with Calcutta film companies and made films like Insaf ki Tope-34, Khudai khidmatgar-37(aka gareeb ki Tope) and in 1939 made Taqdeer ki tope, all with slight patriotic themes.
As per one source, he acted in 35 films, directed 10 talkie films, sang 8 songs, gave music to 1 film and wrote Lyrics to 2 films. Additionally story, dialogues and screenplay writing were also done by him. Some of his films were, Shaikh chilli-37, Khush naseeb-46, Prabhu ki maya-55, Ghar ki numaish-49, Karmaveer-38, Raman-54, Jagriti-54, Hum sab chor hain-56, Basant 60, Bhagvat mahima etc.
After 1960 he reduced his work, due to the loss of 3 grown up sons. Throughout his life he wanted to make a film “Gandhi Sangram”. Some portions were shot, songs were recorded but he could not complete the film. He last worked in a Gujarati film in 1986.
He has been a Producer, Director, story writer, dialogue writer, screenplay writer, lyricist, Singer, Music Director and God knows what else !
Being a staunch Gandhian, he used to participate in rallies etc. Some of his films were Hindustan-32, Insaf ki Tope-34, Gaibi Gola-35 ( he was the writer and the director too.He gave a break to Baby Noorjahan in this film.), Khudai Khidamadgar-37 aka Garib ki Tope, Takdir ki Tope-38 etc .
I found it very difficult to know exactly how many films he did in various capacities in the 30s, as there were conflicting claims by him and Master Fida hussain. In a few cases the details in HFGK and what the claims got duplicated too. Some of his films in the 40s were Ramanuj-43, Giribala-47, Grihalaxmi-48, Ghar ki Numaish-48 ( released only in 1962, with the title ‘ Jai ho muhabbat ki ‘ )
Thanks to information and statistical data provided by Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji of Surat, we know that his Filmography consists of a total 11+ 26 films. The break up is-
11 silent films
25 Talkie films as Actor and 1 film as a writer only.
9 films as a Director
2 films as Lyricist and
2 films as Music Director
As per Muvyz data, he sang 37 songs in 8 films.
From 1951 to 1960, he did 13 films- mostly ( 9) for Filmistan. He directed 2 of them. After 1960 his work was reduced. The death of his 3 sons broke him emotionally. As a true Gandhian, it was his dream to make a film- Gandhi Sangram- on Mahatma Gandhi. He had done all the spade work and the Muhurat of shooting was also done on 2-10-1987, The Government had promised finance. Even Rajiv Gandhi promised him that. however nothing came to him and he died on 30-10-1996, with his dream unfulfilled.
His daughter Shradha used to work in Gujarati films. She too died in a Train accident in 2000. Her daughter Deepshikha is an actress.
The other artiste was actress Ranjana. Now, hardly anyone knows about this actress who had worked as a Heroine with Dilip Kumar also in his early career. One can not get any information about her in any book or on the internet. Here is some information about her, for our readers.
Ranjana’s real name was Ratan Shantaram Deshpande. She was born in Nagpur on 20-10-1927. While studying in St. Ursula High School, she learnt dancing and music from well known ustads. After passing her 6th standard examination, she came to Bombay to her elder sister, Kusum Deshpande, who was already working as an actress with Minerva Movietone films. Kusum married Vasant Thengadi, a handsome actor in Hindi films of those times.
Kusum arranged for specialised dancing for Ratan in the holidays. Later Ratan was taken to Vijay Bhatt of Prakash pictures for an interview. She was immediately selected and got a role in the famous film Ramrajya-1943. In this film she was Chitralekha, Sita’s sakhi. Vijay Bhatt also changed her name to Ranjana. She was in the payroll of Prakash for Rs. 2000 pm. She acted in films like police-44, Vikramaditya-45 and Hamara Sansar-45. Next films were Nai Maa-46, Zamin Asman-46, Mahasati Vrinda Tulsi-47 etc.
Ranjana was called by Bombay Talkies to do the Heroine’s role opposite Dilip Kumar in the film Milan-46. This film was based on Bangla novel Nauka Doobi written by Tagore. She played the role of Hem Nalini in this film’s Hindi version. The same role was done by Meera Sircar in the Bangla film Nauka Doobi.
After this film, Ranjana was in great demand, but she wanted to quit films and get married to live a simple life. She married a young and handsome writer, Arvind Shukla. But after a few months he fell sick and there was no income. After the death of her first husband, Ranjana,it seems, married one Patwardhan in 1954. She continued working in films till 1975. She also worked in many Marathi films. In all, she worked in about 35 Hindi films or so. Ranjana worked with many big stars of her times like, Prem Adeeb, Prithviraj Kapoor, Jairaj, Dilip kumar, Jeevan, Umakant etc etc
It is interesting to note that her sister and her brother in law acted with her in a few films. Some such films were Zamin Asman-46 and Shadi se pehle-47. In the film Saajan ka Ghar-48 all three had worked together.
We have many families like this in Hindi films. I remember Zubeida and her mother and sisters, Sitara Devi and her 2 sisters, Nargis, her mother and brothers, Kapoor family, Dilip Kumar, his brother and sister in law, many film couples and families of several film people as examples. Ranjana was perhaps one early example.
Let us now enjoy the song video from the film Deep jalta Rahe-1959.
