“Dhamaakaa-1980” was directed by Jagdish for ‘Nilkanth Chitra Manch’, Bombay’. It was produced by Sukhdev Dhamija. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.02.1980. It had Kiran Kumar, Sarika, Raza Murad, Appi Umrani, Sanjana, Rajni Bala, Sabi Oberoi, Makhan Singh, Albela, Sandhu, Shashi, Randheer, Shankar Bhake, Amrit Pal, Qureshi, Feroze Irani, Bhola, Manohar, Goel, Shah, Kay Dee and others. Padma Khanna makes a friendly appearance in this movie. Sukhdev Raj makes a special appearance as a ‘truck driver Sardarji’ in this movie. Story of this movie was written by B. Krishna Rao and its dialogues were written by Nida Fazli. Editing of this movie was done by Madhu Adsule.
I have no recollections of this movie when it was released (when I was in my adolesence years). I became aware of this movie in 2015 when I got the copy of Geet Kosh Vol V (1971-1980)
This movie has a song sung by singer Bhupinder Singh. It is that song that has prompted this post. I searched for this song a couple of years back but I drew a blank. Things have changed now. Even the movie has available on online platform.
This movie has four songs. Three songs were penned by Nida Fazli and one song was penned by Sukhdev Raj. Music for this movie was composed by J. Kaushik. The singers for this movie are Bhupinder Singh, Mahendra Kapoor, Bela Sawer and Asha Bhonsle.
Here is a brief about this movie as mentioned on one of the links of this movie. I have tried to add the actor/actress name there from what a little I watch this movie in parts.
The story starts with Dharm Singh (Raza Murad). He lives happily with his family. Now there is an entry of zamindar named as Thakur Jagat Pal Singh (Appi Umrani) who used to loot the people. He is a womanizer and one day while the Dharam Singh family returns back to the village; his men rape his wife and kill his brother. Now, things are very depressing for Dharam Singh. His sister-in-law goes to the mental shock after seeing the entire drama. Now to seek revenge against this killing, he starts becoming a dacoit and will take revenge against this killing. He kidnaps Jagat Pal’s daughter (Sarika as a grown up adult) and tries to treats as his own daughter. Now, things change and so the relationships. In the end Thakur Jagat Pal Singh dies his own death by throwing himself from the top of his own home and thus getting his ‘karnee kaa phal’ 🙂
One can also get an idea about the storyline of this movie in today’s song which is played in the background as the titles of the movie roll on.
Sources mentioned that this movie was in the making since long (may be in the years 1973 and further), however its records were released in 1979 only and the movie was released in ‘1980’. The director of this movie Jagdish has only this Hindi movie to his credit as a director. Sukhdev Dhamija the producer of this movie was producer for of the movie ‘Anaadi Khilaadi-1986’ and as per information he also acted in the movie ‘Hazaar Haathh-1978’. The lyricists’ name for the today’s song is Sukhdev Raj and as per sources he wrote only one song which is the today’s song. Though as an actor his name is mentioned for ‘Dhamaakaa-1980’ and ‘Shoorveer-1988’. My guess is that the producer of this movie Sukhdev Dhamija and Sukhdev Raj are the same person, since in the titles of the movie ‘Dhamaakaa-1980’ does not mention Sukhdev Raj in actors’ list but it is only Sukhdev Dhamija’s name that appears in the titles. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this information about the lyricist and actor.
The music director for this movie is J. Kaushik whom we know better by the name of J.P. Kaushik or Jag Phul Kaushik. His has composed music for movie like ‘Shahar Aur Sapnaa-1963’, ‘Hamaaraa Ghar-1964’, ‘Aasmaan Mahal-1965’, ‘Bambai Raat Kee Baahon Mein-1967’, ‘Saat Hindustani-1969’, ‘Basti Aur Baazaar-1973’, ‘Aankhin Dekhi-1978’, etc.
Coming to the song under discussion it is sung by Bhupinder Singh. On listening to this song it sounds a familiar song to me. May be I got to listen to it on radio earlier. This composition grows upon us if one listens to it more than once. As mentioned above this song gets played in the background as the titles of this movie appears on the screen. The first stanza of this song is played again the background in the end of this movie when the ‘villain’ is beaten by the ‘heroes’ and is punished for his ‘wrong doings’.
With this song this movie ‘Dhamaakaa-1980’ makes its debut on the blog.
